Text from Pages 1 - 256 of the 1988 volume:

EVERYTHING Zephyrhills High School 1975 North 12th Street Zephyrhills, FL 34248 FROM the students to the faculty and administration, we take pride in our alma mater. We show our pride in many ways, especially in our high-spirited, black and orange pep rallies where almost anything goes! Other forms of “showing off” our pride consist of excellence in academics and active membership in clubs. Students at Zephyrhills know the ABC’s of learning and strive for the best. Activity period offers a variety of clubs for students to demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and strategic skills. Mrs. Woodard says, “This is a test. If you win, you fail my class, to David Hamilton. Students cheer for the Bulldogs. 2 Top: Lynn Hagelin. Joshua Stefanoff. and Danny Morr gather around to learn how to load film. Left center: is typing the same as calculus? Ed Ogden doesn't look convinced that typing is as much fun as Mr. Bailey’s calculus class. Center: Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Knight always enjoy the spirit of the pep rallies. Right center: Coach Milburn says to the freshmen: “1 want you to yell for the Bulldogs!” Bottom: Edwin Amerman shows his giving spirit by donating blood. 3 A kcademic classes are a major part of our school, after all, that is why we are here. The students feel that grades are as important as extracurricular activities. Students strive to keep their grades high enough to graduate or to win acceptance at that certain college. Students enjoy going to classes because of the variety of courses. New classes this year include photography, dra- ma, and gifted. Top: Mr. Kaylor's Alge bra I class racks their brains while trying to fin- ish their homework. Cen- ter: Mr. Boot's seventh period photography class gather around to look at visuals. Bottom: Does boredom sit? April Taylor seems thrilled while striv- ing for an ‘A’ in Mrs. Woodard’s sixth period English class by working diligently on her vocabu- lary homework. 4 Top: Mrs. Rowell and Ms. Lane seem to be In disagreement about whether or not Doug Daniels is a stud. Is that short for student? Left: Bryan Whittenburg asks, “What’s the answer to number two?” Nichelle Robinson’s response is, “I don’t know. I was just about to ask you.” Right: Mr. Cohen’s seventh period class waits patiently for the show to begin. 5 Getting ready fight, the athletes practice hard to learn to pull together as one. Each student at ZHS shows his pride in his own way. The football team practices hard and abides by strict curfews so they can be at their best for the games. The rest of us do our part to get the players revved up at our rambunctious pep rallies. Top: The Varsity Bulldogs arc always going full speed ahead to win the game. Left: Some of our great varsity football team players talk about how to defeat the Pirates. Right: Workout or relax? Jeanine Boyd does her strenuous workout in the girls’ weight room. 6 Top left: The class of 1991 is getting into the swing of a pep rally. Top right: Mr. Milburn shows his school spirit at every pep rally by wearing his orange and black. Center: Here are some juniors yelling their lungs out for the Bulldogs. Bottom: “Coach Gardner was right. This table is harder to carry than beating the Pasco pirates.” said Jimmy Geiger to Dan Knowlton. 7 z................................... always ready for a good time. Life at ZHS is never boring. If academics or self- improvement has us tired, we can always turn to social graces or find out the latest gossip. Most of all, students enjoy a good party to relax after school, or if we can find the excuse, in school. Here at ZHS we know that all work and no play make a Bulldog a dull puppy. Above left: On his birthday, Mr. Robinson had fun at the outdoors pep rally. Above right: Suzette Summers and Tom Loureiro show their casual friendship as they walk back to class. Right: Jessie Vilminot says, Honest, I didn’t spill It.” “Right, it just fell over by itself.” says Kristen Lacey. 8 Top left: Lynn Cunningham and Se- an Mong walk back to class after the senior class picture. Top right: Eddie McKenzie shows us his pearly whites. Center: Seniors enjoy a sunny stroll before they go back to class. Bottom left: Jose Roldan. How’s it going? Bottom right: Publicity is easy for Braeson House as he and his friends wear their House shirts. 9 MRS. REYNOLDS Within each organization there is a person who devotes much time, love, and energy to the group. On behalf of the seniors and Zephilsco staff of 1988, we dedicate this book to an individual who filled this role. In appreciation for her cooperation and understanding, we dedicate the 1988 Zephilsco to a woman who has our admiration and grat- itude — Mrs. Camille Reynolds. We love you! Top right: Mrs. Reyn- olds removes a video cassette to show one of her science classes. Middle right: What are friends for? Ms. Castro and Mrs. Reynolds try to smile through another pep rally. Near right: We told Mrs. Reynolds not to break up that fight. Bottom right: Mrs. Reynolds smiles because only ten min- utes are left in sev- enth period. 10 MR. KRETSCHMAR After 33 years in the public school system, Mr. Ernest Kretschmar re- tired this year. As the Assistant Prin- cipal of Curriculum, he was respon- sible for class scheduling and entering student data into the county com- puter system. Mr. Kretschmar began teaching Algebra I, II, and III in 1954, when all 12 grades were in the same building. He attended several major universities, including Princeton, where he occasionally bumped shoul- ders with Einstein. He believes that education is very important today and encourages students to work hard in school. Mr. Kretschmar, in his home away from home, spends most of his time compiling and entering data on the school's computer system. 11 13 EXCHANGING ALPHABETS Our high school hosted five exchange students from four countries: Danny DelRio and Jose Virgili- Vindes from Spain; Laurent Stomboli from France; Javier Ruiz from Honduras; and Susana Burbano from Ecuador. All speak Spanish except Laurent, who speaks French. Learning about American life- styles is an exciting day-by-day experience for them. Zephyrhills students benefit from the exchange stu- dents by developing an understanding of the visitors’ cultures. The representatives were nominated by the faculty, and the delegates were chosen through an interview conducted by the sponsoring unit. Delegates traveled to Florida State University for a chance to get “inside” politics and discover how and why it works. This was a democracy-in-action program which enabled the participants to view local, state, and national elections with a new insight. Not only did they gain a new understanding of patriotism and national pride, but they made new friends and shared experiences that will stay with them for many years to come. This was a unique opportunity, and our congratulations go out to tomorrow’s leaders. 19 VIT’s are those seniors chosen by the faculty of Zephyrhills High School in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements and leadership qualities. They are involved in many extracurricular activities and hold positions of major responsibility. Congrat- ulations to tomorrow’s leaders, today’s Very Important Teens! There were also class competitions, featuring dif- ferent relays and other activities, and the traditional Homecoming pep rally and pa- rade. Friday fea- tured the Homecoming pep rally, more class competitions, the Homecoming pa- rade, the game and the dance. With high spirits Bulldog fans gathered early in Bulldog Stadium for the game against the Gulf Buccaneers. The time to remember alumni and show the true Bull- dog spirit was here at last. A pre-game show, including the Homecoming candi- dates and floats displaying this year’s theme of “Home Sweet Home” preceded the real action. A fumble recovery by Jon Bibik began the Bulldog drive to their first Home- coming touchdown. The touchdown was made by Eddie McKenzie in two carries for seven yards, which made the score 6- 0 at the half. During halftime Suzette Summers was crowned Homecoming Queen; Jimmy Geiger, Homecoming King; Heidi Ten- Brink, Princess; Jon Bibik, Prince; Tracy Foster, Sophomore Maid; and Holly Tim- mons, Freshman Maid. The winners of the wall and float competitions were also announced. The Seniors won the wall and class float competitions; D.C.T. won the club float competition. In the third quarter a seventy-yard punt return by Sean Mong made the score 12-0. A fourth quarter 46-yard field goal by Eric Smith broke the previous school record of 42 yards and made the final score 15-0. ROTC drill team staying in step.
