4 Foreword Zephyrhills High School is a major part of all of our lives. Seniors, probably believe this more than other students. As we grow older we realize that school is not simply a place we have to go. Z.H.S. will remain to us a place in which we learned, shared, experienced and had fun together. The Annual Staff has attempted to capture segments of all phases of school life. May this yearbook always bring to your mind the fondest of memories! Dedication In deep appreciation for his kindness and understanding we dedicate this volume of the Zephilsco to Mr. Victor Smith. Even though he is busy with his many duties as supervisor of the new Junior High Work Program and his class duties, he is never too busy to answer our questions and help us with our problems. Beginning with the seventh grade, he has been our teacher, adviser, and most of all, loyal friend. 6 We, the students of Zephyrhills High School, have seen our school go through many changes in the past few years. Do we ever stop to realize what a great difference these changes have made? Remember when; You had to stand in the lunch line for twenty minutes? No more than one class could be in the library at a tims? Classes were crowded because there weren’t enough rooms to go around? Seven new portable classrooms have taken care of this problem. Among other changes the Band Hall is now air-con- ditioned. For the convenience and enjoyment of the stu- dents and faculty a new complete bell and intercom sys- tem has been installed. There is also a more comfortable atmosphere for some of the faculty as several offices have been made from a class room to relieve the crowded con- dition of the main office. 7 9 FACULTY They Keep the School MRS. BARBARA HOWELL Bookkeeper These two efficient people are the hub of the wheel which keeps the school system in motion. Also, very important to the office are the stu- dent assistants who help by running bulletins, selling supplies, collecting absentee lists, and answering the telephones. Running Smoothly MRS. Among them are counseling and scheduling students, keeping permanent records up-to-date, and administering all National and State tests. They and the remaining faculty are assisted by the Teacher's Aids. Typing, running off tests, grading assignments and various other duties that the teachers may request is their part in keeping the school functioning well. 13 JEAN MOSHONAS Guidance Director Better Communications Through English There are four main curriculum courses offered to the students at Zephyrhills High School: General, College Preparatory, Busi- ness Education, and Vocational. No matter what courses one takes or how many different subjects he has he must al- ways take English. When he becomes a sen- ior, he has a choice of Practical, Business, or College Preparatory English. English is an ever-present subject because it is an ever-important one. In addition to English, enterprising stu- dents may venture to learn a foreign lang- uage. At present Latin and Spanish are the only choices, but in the future we have hopes of French or German being offered by the Language Department. 14 and Languages MR. BILL ALEXANDER F.S.U. It has room for several classes at one time and study booths have been installed. Our Audio Visual depart- ment is at this location, too, and is growing fast. The Audio Visual team consists of Joe Ahrens, Ray Mullis, Doug Kirk, and Skip Stewart. MRS. BETTY HALL A.B. Georgia State Univ. for Women Library MISS PRISCILLA HUNT B.S. Butler Univ. Mr. Clark has spent innumerable extra hours working with the band members both individually and col- lectively and always remains pleasant and even-tempered under even the most trying circumstances. The Junior High Band is composed of seventh and eighth graders and the members are getting valuable experi- ence in preparation for the high school band. His remarkable high school band stands 85 strong and excels both in concert and marching. Mr. Clark sponsors the Pep Band, a small group that plays at pep rallies and basketball games, and the majorettes, who are also members of the band. From a group of eager, in- experienced students, usually starting in the sixth grade, to the accomplished band students of today - all this through the unlimited patience and untir- ing efforts of one man, Mr. John T. A. . M. E. D. , Social Studies, Science We at Zephyrhills Hills School feel the most important reason for studying history, is to learn about man's past. But what can this offer the student in his own time? It can cultivate a more responsive citizen - one who will realize the importance of the ballot, understand the reasons behind a re- volt, and above all will be more tolerant of oth r cultures and religions. History is the whole of man's experience and today’s ..experience will determine the future of mankind. 18 by Studying the Past LARRY SMITH B. S., Appalachian State, N. C. History, Geography 19 Homemaking Balanced menus, attractive table settings, discussions of home life, expression in fabric - all these are part of our course for home- makers. This course teaches our girls (and some of our boys) the regular homemakers talents for sewing, cooking, and for developing a sense of economy. The major part of this is taught through experi- ence training in the newly-established kitchen and sewing room. E LILLIAN JOHNSON F.S.U., Univ. of Tenn. , B. S. Home Economics F.H. A. Student Council EMMA LOU HARVEY Madison College B. S., Home Economics F.H. A. 20 This course is open to students who are interested in some area of the agricultural field. They receive experience training by doing field work and by working around animals. Horticulture, poultry raising, livestock raising, and many other areas of agriculture are taught to the students. This course gives the student who is interested in agriculture, but who doesn't live on a farm, the chance to learn the things successful farmers should know. In this modern world of ours, mathematics and sciences hold the key to the future. Many students don't realize how important these subjects really are. Just think how many times in one day we use some bit of mathematical or scientific knowledge learned early in our school career! No matter what field one goes into after gradua- tion, one can be sure he will need math and science. Here at Zeph- yrhills High School one may pick from: general math, algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, biology, physiology, chemistry, and earth science. ROBERT ALWOOD U. S. F. B. A. Math, P. The students are placed in their jobs by Mr. Kendrick and Mr. Smith. This on the job training provides valuable experience for the student. The students go to school for half a day and work for the rest of the day in the stores of local business men. They receive three credits for a year. VICTOR SMITH Univ. of Tampa B.S. J. H. W. E. P. 25 Keeping Physically Fit Physical Education teaches co-operation with others through participation in sports and provides students with an opportunity to become physically fit at all times. Classes are held in the gym and on the nearby practice field. A wide range of exercise and sports are taught. Some are: tumbling, broad- jumping, baseball, football, basketball, volleyball, track, and soccer. JOHN CLEMENTS Univ. of Florida Duke Univ., B. S. Athletic Director, P. E. For half a year during the period allotted for physical education, students are given the chance to take a driver training course at school. During the first nine weeks students study rules of the road preparatory to taking their restricted drivers test. Learning the regulations for Florida driving, operating a car safely and sensibly, and securing a driver's license are a few of the ad- vantages offered in Driver's Education. 27 Lunchroom Staff LEFT TO RIGHT - Sessoms, Lane, Bird, Jemison, Taylor, Lock, Smith, Amos, Paul, and Drew. Even with their limited facilities, these ladies do a wonderful job. Serving at- tractive, nutritious meals to some 895 students and teachers a day, they do their share to keep us healthy. Custodians LEFT TO RIGHT - Hall, Hall, Grant, and Eldridge. Keeping the grounds and buildings neat at ZHS is not an easy job. But, this is managed by our custodians. 28 ACTIVITIES Homecoming 1968 Winning second place were the Freshmen. Whip Those Rams was the theme.
