Mr. Reitz teaches one of the largest groups of students in the school. He explains the difficult concepts of Social Studies so that all students can understand them. Many students are stimulated to new levels of thinking because of his lectures. 3 4 1965—A CHANGING TEAR Students of Zephyrhills High School welcomed progressive changes in the school during the year 1965. These changes resulted in more efficient management and an atmos- phere more conducive to study and learning. We welcomed changes in the school's appearance. Several rooms received new paint jobs. Such changes resulted in an increase in school spirit. An Outstanding Administration directed the new changes at Zephyrhills High School. Our Alma Mater— Zephyrhills High School 5 A new switchboard increased the efficiency of the office in an- swering calls and conducting school business. TOP: Jed Wilkinson, Bob Winters, Russell Kirk. Outstanding Administration As an outstanding administration directed the new changes at Zephyrhills High School, additions to our faculty increased the number of subjects taught and the number of students reached. 6 Increased School Spirit In his own way, each student showed loyalty to the School. Students themselves noted an increase in school spirit. We cheered louder at our pep rallies and took more pride in our school. The year 1965 was filled with pleasant memories. The rush from classes These boys have a share of responsibility in the workings of school. Improved Junior High 8 A Junior High class stops for a moment of re- laxation. FACULTY ADMINISTRA TION Mr. Ray Stewart, Principal Although Mr. Stewart has only been with us since August, he has already done much for the improve- ment of the school. His counseling of students, his understanding of their needs, and his fairness to all, has already won the respect of his student body. Mrs. Edith Ward, Secretary Mrs. Ward has the exacting job of keeping the school's accounts in order and checking the lunch- room reports. She is always willing to help students, and many are cheered by her happy smile. Mrs. Page Renninger, Secretary Mrs. Renninger has a double duty. Mathematics Dean of Men 15 CURRICULUM English Since English is a basic subject, necessary for all fields of study, it is strongly empha- sized in our school. Classes study a broad range of subject matter, from Chaucer's poems to Jack London's fiction. Languages Two languages are offered this year. Latin was the subject chosen by those who wished a basic background in language. Spanish, the language of our Latin American neigh- bors, was selected by interested students. Sciences Sciences and Mathematics are strongly em- phasized in our modern age of rockets and missiles. At Zephyrhills we are striving to keep pace with the new advances in these fields. D.C.T. this year has had much success in selling their victory ribbons. The money earned from selling these ribbons is used for an employer- employee banquet near the end of the year. Z-H.S. BAND The Zephyrhills High School Band was superior this year, as always. During football season they were the highlights of all the halftime activities. They gave three concerts during the year. They marched in several parades, both local and out-of-town. Barbara Thompson was chosen as a member of the state sight-reading band. Several other individuals participated in events at contest. They practiced four afternoons a week during the football season and for band contest. They added flash to the band during the halftime shows. The entire majorette corps as seen in a routine- Charlene Collier, Joan Thomoson, Nancy Bentley. 54 Eloise Hall,'Vonnie Kensey, Diane Clements. Dick Dibble, Editor, Linda Sante, Co- Editor, and Janice McGuffey, Publications examine the dummy of the Bulldogger. The school newspaper was published bi- monthly, and was printed by the Zephyr- hills News. It was an excellent paper that contained articles about school, local, and national affairs. Feature Writers: Jed Wilkinson, Susan Bucey, Scott Johnson, Sandy Clark, Joe Maniscalco, Carol Grace, and Tom Taylor all added interest to the Bulldogger. EDITOR: Kaye Henry 56 PUBLICITY MANAGERS: Bob Winters and Russell Kirk Linda Hayden, Laurel Reitz, and Tom Porter co-ordinate the activities of the Annual Staff. The staff members received special instruction and advice in preparing the Annual layouts. A special period for working on the Annual gave some time to work closely with the Editor and the Advisor. CLASS EDITORS: Eloise Hall, Hope Wintersteen, Larry Turner, Helen Chenkin, Linda Sante, and Gloria Kinnard. 57 Members of the FTA enjoyed a variety of activities. They served as guides for a PTA open house, sold tickets for a PTA spaghetti supper, and substituted for the elementary teachers at different times during the year. FUTURE TEA CHERS OF AMERICA OFFICERS: Harriet Morton, Patty Carmon, Linda Hayden, Barbara Thompson, Marcia McGinnis. Members of the Pep Club gave great support to the teams this year. They sat in a group at the games, and yelled loud and strong. A pep band also played at a few of the basketball games. The pep club sponsored student buses to some of the games. 58 BETA CLUB BETA CLUB OFFICERS: President -David Myers Vice President--Barbara Thompson Secretary--Marcia McGinnis Treasurer--Lillian Johnson The Beta Club started the year off with a tapping ceremony and formal initiation. Their first project was sponsoring several Junior High dances. The profit from these, along with money from selling candy at Christmas, was used to redecorate the stage in the auditorium. 59 FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA Some of the many projects of our FHA this year were two Silver Teas, two fashion shows, and a community survey of teenage values. Several members attended the District and State conventions, and our chapter had one state officer and a candidate for another. FUTURE FARMERS This organization, which is national, performs many services for the school in addition to its regular chapter proj- ects. Its String Band won first place in the state of Florida and attended the National Convention in Kansas City. The girls prac- tice many long hours on cheers. They have done many things to increase the spirit of the students in support of the school. Suzanne Winters Harriet Morton SAFETY PATROL Members of the Safety Patrol serve in a variety of ways to improve the school. They are on duty at - the doors before and after school, and during lunch. Two of its members attend the flag every day. They also direct student traffic. - JUNIOR RED CROSS Members of the Junior Red Cross sponsored a membership drive which raised the largest amount of money on record for the school. They sponsored a very humorous leg contest for the Senior boys. 63 DEBATE CLUB OFFICERS PRESIDENT: Laurel Reitz VICE PRESIDENT: David Meyers SECRETARY: Bonnie Durland SPONSOR: Mrs. Kaylor The debate team consists of affirmative and negative teams, also one extemporaneous speaker. The mem- bers, chosen by their scholastic recommendations, gain poise and experience in speech. The topic issued for debate by the government is Nuclear Disarmament. Mrs. Kaylor, the sponsor, also helps them with their speeches, and goes with them to their meetings. Zephyrhills finished third in the conference behind the powerful East Bay and Turkey Creek teams. Lack of players proved to be Zephyrhills' biggest difficulty throughout the year.
