oreivon j Man's best friend is a dog. A child's first love is a dog. For twelve years we have led our Bulldog through hard battles and on to victory. Now, in accordance with the principles of fair play and American tradition, the reckoning has come at last and a dog has reversed the pattern. Through die pages of this Zephilsco our dogs lead us back through memories. We, of die annual staff, earnestly hope that you enjoy every page of the '59 ZEPHILSCO, and will cherish it always. n • n? MRS. Margie Braden Bonnie Reed Louise Leopold Laura Higginson Mary Alice Gill Alice Wintersteen Sharon Forbes Elizabeth Witt She was a girl of lovely air, Crowned with a head of raven hair. Eyes so blue and grace so gay She never dreamed she'd go away. Almost sweet sixteen and we'll ne'er forget How she didn't e’en fus or fret Her slow sweet smile was always there To chase the gloom from everywhere. God took her in a strange, strange way. He needed her no doubt to stay Among the angels bright and fair To sweeten Heaven's pure, pure air. -Constance Kaylor Xui Wdl We, the Senior Class of 1959, being of sound mind, memory, and body (more or less), do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament. To Z.H.S., our battered alma mater, we leave vivid memories of the class of '59, and the courage the students will need to go on without us. To the teachers we leave our mark-embedded on tables, desks, walls, ceilings, books, paper, blackboards, and floors. Also, many many thanks for their untiring efforts. To Mr. Brown we leave 50 feet of rope and some tranquilizer pills to do with as he wishes. To Coach Clements we leave a keg of nails, 3 bags of plaster, and 14 bottles of distilled water to repair the Senior homeroom; also barrels and barrels of thanks for guidance and support. To Mrs. Swing and Mrs. Childers we leave all our old notes and copy sheets on the annual, and a great, big THANK YOU for their help on this Zephilsco. To the Juniors we leave our thanks for the prom and banquet and a well-lighted path to follow as they embark on their last year, with the hope that they, like we, can be a quiet, dependable, distinguished, intelligent, dignified Senior class. To the Sophomores we leave our schemes and unfinished projects for making money, and our highly treasured book on how to throw a prom for 98 cents and the tin plates from chicken pot pies. To the Freshmen, a poor, underprivileged, mistreated group of underclassmen, we can only leave our fondest wishes and most sincere hopes that they, too, will survive and come through with flying colors. To the band we leave all our old reeds, sour notes, five shoe laces, a permanently-knotted tie, and our advice to grin and bear it while playing assignments. To the football boys we leave sandspur stadium-with all its 482,647,122, and 1 2 burrs. Incidentally, since our last census at band practice, that number has been decreased due to the fact that we picked seven bouquets to be distributed among the more deserving members of the faculty. I, Fred Trebour, leave (rest at last for the teachers) The Senior Class of 1959, after a spectacular graduation, took off in a strato-jet. Their destination..... Alaska, forty-ninth state of the union, with all its untold wealth and resources. Little did the people of Alaska know that within ten short years this fine class would turn Alaska into the playground of the world. Now, after years of fame and success we see the celebrities and the amazing feats they have accomplished. Jim Burgess designed and built a gigantic , pink milkglass skyscraper, and dubbed it the Pepto Bismol House. Of main interest are the pearl topped pool tables, available only to those who know on which of the 1001 floors they are located. Since the class was destined to make so much money Delilah Johnson established the Alaskan Trust Bank. To make sure the vault wouldn't be entered by anyone other than De, Theron Howard invented a burglar-proof alarm system. Marvin Gill made a mint manufacturing polka-dotted tooth paste. Now he spends all his time counting money. His nickname is Scrooge of the Iceland Marvin's neighbor, John Barefoot Tifton, got wise and fired his old secretary, Michael Anthony, and hired a pretty gal, named Kay Pope. She loves the job of carrying around a million dollars. Has everyone seen the latest headlines-ALASKAN FILM INDUSTRY THREAT TO HOLLYWOOD? Benny Brooks has built Alaska's biggest film industry (the only one). His current movie, Around the Moon in 80 Seconds , made a splash. One of the most famous stars for BBB (Brooks, Brooks, Brooks) is Laura Higginson. She was going to be a Home Ec. teacher but decided to star in pictures. Her latest movie is, I Was a Teen- Age Bubble Dancer! By now I'm sure everyone has heard of Lorelei's. That's a famous restaurant and night-spot in Alaska. Be- sides serving her french fried ice cubes and seal steaks, Lorelei entertains with the rest of her trio and plays a hot sax between verses. Pat Whitehead has gone into the business of sculptoring totem poles with Wade Bodiford as her partner. Some- times she hires the other Seniors to act as models. Carmen Yebba! Or maybe you know him by his professional name, Yarmen Kebba. He's the famous heart- throb of the teens. All over the country girlf are buying polar bears just because Yarmen has one. His buddy, Donald Edwards, is a big cigarette manufacturer. The name brand of the cigarettes is Polar. Everybody, but everybody, smokes Polar! It has a smoking man's filter, and a thinking man's taste. In fact, it's all filter.! Everyone obeys the law in Alaska! They have to with Constable Richard Kirk, the human bloodhound around. This guy needs no cop car, for he has his trusty steed. Dynamite, to catch lawbreakers. Sylvia Sutton opened a used heliacopter lot, and is known as the Blonde Bombshell , dealer in heliacopters with a heart. Medford Griffin is going to school to learn to be a claim jumper so everyone with a gold mine better keep an eye out for him! Does your polar bear have a cold? If it does you'd better see Dr. Robert Gerlach and order some of his little liver pills. They spruce bears up in no time at all. Remember that quiet gal, Joyce Stover? She came along with us and found her line to be training seals to water-ski. Dot Hudson was another animal-lover. She now has a flea circus with Flerman, the only flea who can operate a hula hoop! Since Alaska is now the playground of the world women must keep up in fashion. For this they look to Joyce Lummus and Curtis Young. Joyce is world renowned for her latest creation, the ermine-lined transparent dress with built-in heat. Curtis is a high fashion” hair stylist. He was first famous for his sack cut, and more recently became known for his balloon cut. Barbara Youmans has proved herself as the Picasso of Alaska. The Eskimos simply go wild about her finger paintings. She uses flourescent paints so the Eskimos don’t have any electricity bill during the six months of darkness in Alaska. Fred Trebour has a laboratory on the 1000 floor of the Pepto Bismol House where he is always coming up with earth-shattering discoveries. Right now Fred is working on his theory that the clouds can be sprayed with cream so that when it snows we'll have ice cream! Does you boyfriend hate you? Well, write and tell Luly Lovelorn, alias Sandra Craig, about it. She is now writing the lovelorn column for the Daily Bugle in Alaska. Do you know that Mad Magazine has an office in Alaska and the editor is Charlie Ray Adams? Merle Padgett and Sandra Wolancevich work for him. They write cruel jokes and actually get paid for it? Now Mad is the maddest thing in print! Earnesteen Quick became so fond of the North woods in Alaska that she became a hunting and fishing guide there. Right after graduation Shirley Walker took off for parts unknown. She turned up some time later with a collection of animals from the wilds of Africa. Now Shirley is owner and caretaker of the Walker jungletarium. For some reason nothing could get Monica Prowant or Marcia Betterman to Alaska. Seems that while Lynn is working on missiles Monica stays home and keeps his space suit in shape. Marcia is secretary to Mr. Chuck Bellows-her husband. How's that for an employer? Jerry Sanford-now there's a brain! He put his mathematical know-how to work and designed the bridge that was built between Alaska and Russia. The bridge extends right to the Kremlin so the inmates can see how we (the pride of America) live. Gwen Stroup and Barbara Shelton had Crystal Springs moved to Alaska so we now have a warm place for swimming. Leave it to them to think of that! Alice Hutchinson decided that she would put her knowledge of child psychology to use. She now operates the Hey-Diddle-Diddle Nursery for Little Alaskans. Marvin Wheeler arranges and lights the flares that make the Northern Lights. Quite an artist, isn't he? Nancy Miller is now a rock and roll disc jockey on station WICE. Besides playing all the latest hits she gives jitterbugging lessons to any Eskimo who isn't hep. John Andres never did like the Russians so right after he got in the Navy he sneaked off withone of the submarines and took a dive for the ocean floor. They’ll never find him now! Artiste Parsons is getting more and more famous. Upon arriving in Alaska she started teaching some Eskimos how to play flutes. Now she has a complete orchestra-of flutes and piccolos! Bobby Hinsz in the tough coach of the Alaskan Walruses. He is loved by the whole team because he only has them practice once a year. Of course they don't know what they're doing, but that's what confuses the other team! Benjamin Parsimonious Smith, governor of Alaska. Right after graduation this boy won the war against the ostriches and then went into politics. Ben was elected governor and now all his time goes to golf and visiting his farm in Zephyrburg. Buzzie Reutimann has just bought out General Motors and is moving it to Alaska. Besides building fine cars he is manufacturing Impala Sleds which accelerate to 10 m.p.h. in 1 4 mile. Bobbie Jean Temples is a stewardess for Alaska Sled Lines. She keeps all the male passengers happy by holding their hands to keep them warm. The pilot of all the sleds is Marion Ryan. Marion recently was awarded the safe-driver certificate for not going over the speed limit of 35 m.p.h. ever! Gayle Garrison decided to follow her natural talents and became an opera star. She is also very good on T.V. and won an Emmy for her performance in Frankenstein Meets the Purple Eater! Clifton Grimes just started FFA-the Future Farmers of Alaska. He’s been trying to grow cucumber in the ice but has given up. Oh well, maybe he'll learn something about fish. Terry Hancock was going to do something famous, too, but he retired at the ripe old age of eighteen. Some people have all the luck! Loretta Bamberger got tired of doing ordinary things and switched her sport to mountain climbing. While she's busy climbing David visits her by heliacopter. In our quest for knowledge Margie Braden and I went on to the Universtiy of Alaska. However, Margie got lonely for her chickens and built a penguin ranch. She was going to have chickens that would lay square eggs, but it never quite worked out! I am now the biggest threat to Perry Mason. All I need now is an hour and a half television show and Perry will be finished. But, then who knows, maybe we'll go into partnership! And that winds up the success story of the 49 happy members of the class of '59. See you in Alaska!
