CLASS HISTORY On a very eventful day in September, 1941, nine eager little boys and girls, who were to finish their schooling at Z.H.S., trudged to Mrs. Helen Hamilton for their first year. The group included Patty Smith, David Vestal, Roger Whitworth, Tobey Smith, Wanda Williams, Robert Jones, Neva Jean Sellars, Beverly Bolt, and Margaret Hill. They advanced to the second grade, under the direction of Mrs. Essie Mae Blitch. In the third grade, after some moving around, Raymond Geiger decided to join the happy band. Mrs. J. A. Turner led the group. On to the fourth grade and Mrs. Travis. Hazel Dukes joined the jolly little demons and Lyndall Wheeler came up from Miami. And now the fifth grade. That was the year wehad two teach- ers, Miss Martha Barnes and Mrs. Turner. Two more members joined, Ger- ald Miller and Mary Kate Witt. It wasn't long before we were in the sixth grade with Miss Hodges. Mary Lou Richards and Jim Kennedy came in. Junior High, the seventh grade and Mrs. Alice Atwater for our overseer proved an exciting experience. Ginger Sawtelle rejoined us and decided to finish school here. We advanced to the eighth. We had five new additions that year, Sebron Thomas, Joan Braden, Jim Welsch, Bill Sabin, and Merl- ene Nelson. What a time we had in our Freshman year! We were inhigh school and Mrs. Matthews was again our sponsor. We had only one addition that year, Mildred Mattingly, from Alabama. The class officers were: President, Joan Braden; VicePresident, David Vestal; Secretary, Margaret Hill; and Treasur- er, Merlene Nelson. In our Sophomore year, Patricia Trebour joined us from New Jersey. Mr. Bill Moore was class sponsor and our officers were: President, Joan Braden; VicePresident, David Vestal; Secretary Margaret Hill; and Treasur- er Bunt Massey. At last we were Juniors. It wasn’t long before we realized we had a lot of hard work before us as many of us tested our acting ability in the class play, Henry's Hired Aunt. Soon after this we began making plans for our gala Pirate Banquet, which was held at Hotel Zephyr and Prom at the Amer- ican Legion Hall. It was declared a success by all who attended. Shirley Lanham came in that year. Our class officers were: President, Margaret Hill; Vice President, Gerald Miller; Secretary, Merlene Nelson; and Treasurer, Mary Lou Richards. Mr. Dave Boatwright was our able guide through that year. Under the leadership of Mr. John Clements we advanced to our Senior year only to realize that our school days would soon be over. Dorris Whit- worth came down from Tennessee to graduate with us. Our class officers were; President, Neva Jean Sellars; Vice President, Joan Myers; Secretary, Beverly Bolt; and Treasurer, Patty Smith. The comedy, Act Your Age was our production of the year. We will long remember the banquet and prom which the Junior class gave in our honor and especially Class Night, Baccalaureate, and finally Graduation on June 2nd at the Home Theater. CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1953, being of sound mind and body, hereby make and declare this to be our last will and testament. To our Alma Mater and all the students and faculty who make up our wonderful school, we leave this Zephilsco of 1953. To the teachers we leave fond memories of the perfect Seniors of 1953, also many thanks. To Mr. McPherson we leave a giant bottle of hair dye to touch up the gray hairs we helped him sprout, and luck with the coming Seniors. To Coach Clements, our sponsor, we leave corrals full of thanks and a lasso to set off his cowboy shirt and also, to help keep Johnny and Diane near. To the Junior Class, we leave our ability to maintain a dignified atsmophere in ourhomeroom at all times. We also leave a nice padded cell with pink stripes and purple polka-dot walls to help them further their curious activities. To the Freshman Class we leave our ability to become quiet, dignified Seniors. I, Margaret Hill, will my slim figure to Nellie Jean Kimprell and my ability to skip school and get away with it to HaroldHinsz. I, Tobey Smith, will my ability to make good grades in school to DickBraden. I, Joan Myers, will my motto of playing hockey just for practice to Floyd Cherry. I, Mary Lou Richards, will my record of safe, courteous, and slow driving to Ira Hill. I, Roger Whitworth, will my black, curly hair to Norman Pricher. I, Merlene Nelson, will my ability to go steady with all the boys to Sara Mae Cox and my strawberry blond hair to David Lee. I, Wanda Williams Riley, will my ability to get in everybody's hair to Howard Obstand my flirtatious ways to Joan Lefler. I, David Vestal, will my ability to play hockey to Tom Bright and my height to Lonnie Whitworth. I, Beverly Bolt, will my nice quiet ways to Gordon Pitcher. I, Jim Welsch, will my great, big, glamorous nose to Wendell Hdgeman, and my knowledge of nothing to Keith Witham. I, Patricia Trebour, will my ability at shorthand to Anna Greene and my long, wavy hair to Patsy Ryals. I, Dorris Whitworth, will my height to H.C. Nesbit. I, Joan Braden, will my delicate blush to Gerald Jackson, and my ability to always look innocent to Louis Loysch. I, Lyndall Wheeler, will my nice quiet laugh to Betty Jo Boyette, and my ability to tell a joke to Phyllis Geiger. I, Patty Smith, will my title as Most Flirtatious to Kenneth Keen and my shy, bashful ways to Bill Baker. I, Robert Jones, will my ways of catching girls to Loyd Davis. I, Neva Jean Sellars, will my ability to control the Senior Class to Dorothy Austin and my quiet ways to Patsy Kline. I, Gerald Miller, will my ability to drive a car slowly to Eddie McClellan. I. Raymond Geiger, will my ability to go steady to Jake Sapp. I, Mary Kate Witt, will my conceited ways to Bill Johnson. I, Jim Kennedy, will my knack of borrowing cigarettes and not paying them back to Brian Daniels, and my shyness toNola Howell. 1, Shirley Lanham, Will my ability to keep a man to Joan Hemmannand my specs to Bill Turner. We, the Senior fottball boys, will the shack to the boys who will be. using it in 1963. Having disposed of everything we ever did possess, we do hereby declare all former wills null and void, this being the only original and true copy of said document. Signed: THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1953 Witness: Peerless Shape PROPHECY It was 1973. Judgment Day was due to roll around in a few days so Gabriel and St.Peter were putting their heads together and getting the records in shape for auditing. Somewhere in the stack they came to the roll of the Zephyrhills High School Class of 1953. Said Gabe to St. Pete, “They sure had some hum-dingers in that group. Here’s one feller Jim Welsch, who's really raking in the green stuff selling brass to the government to be used in the making of 24 karat gold braid through that process developed by a former classmate, Toby Smith, who is now head of the chemistry department at Vassar. Here's another education-minded '53er—Wanda Riley, president of the Painless Pull Dentist School. Speaking of teachers, and education, this Shirley Lanham is teaching flying. Seems this career developed through an early interest in the Air Force. Now there's somethin' I wish I coulda done—right after graduation, Jim Kennedy retired. It seems he spends all of his time fishing using as bait, Worms With Fish Appeal from Bill Sabin's Worm Hatchery. Billhas a Masters in worm culture from Harvard. “One gal really set herself up well-- Cookie Richards'Self-Service Ice Emporium. Ice for every occasion. Wonder where she got the idea for that one? This class certainly supplied a lot of replacement stock for the celebrity world. Roger Whitworth re- placed Bob Woodruff at the University of Florida, the only school ever invited to participate in all the bowl games. In the music world, Beverly Bolt replaced Evelyn andher Magic Violin in the All-Girl Orchestra with Bev and her Caroling Clarinet. And according to this, when Lyndall Wheeler hit Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, and Elizabeth Taylor just packed up and quietly left town. Wouldn't you know one of these characters would turn out to be an automotive engineer? His name is David Vestal and his latest development is a parachute brake for low-flying drivers. Mary Kate Witt is now managing Calumet Farms which has moved headquarters to Zephyrhills so as to have their entries nearer to that multi-billion race trackbuilt in Zephyr Park in honor of Mr. John Clements by the class. The profits are used for the upkeep and maintenance of the shack, favorite dress- ing room of the boys’ Physical Education classes at Z.H.S. Speaking of Zephyr Park, Ray Geiger was so fond of the place thathe became a hunting and fishing guide there. He operates in partnership with Mildred Mattingly who built a pioneer drug store, hunting lodge, and night club in these wilds hoping for the spread of civilization to reach her. Patty Smith has a full-time job—distilling her cure-all cough medicine during the day, and acting as Mildred's hat-check girl at night. Joan Myers took the title of 'Miss Universe’ last month topping contestants from Venus, Mars, and Mercury. She was of course, representing Earth. It seems after being voted Best Looking and Homecoming Queen, she moved right on to it. Sebron Thomas went into Red's poolroom after graduation and never came out again. He's now the manager and 'pro' of the place. Neva Jean Sellars, after playing first Sousaphone in the Band of America, moved up to the position of program consultant to Paul LaValle. Another of those in radio line was Ginger Sawtelle. She improved on the old wireless radio by making it tubeless, waveless, painless, and soundless. Gerald Miller is now the head chef in Antoine's Resturantin New Orleans. The place is famous for his Grits a laHarmonica. Robert Jones and Dorris Whitworth formed a friendship in school that carried into a career for them both--they're touring Dixie with Jones' and Whitworth's Super-Colossal Flea Circus, featuring Flerman, the Talking Flea. Pat Trebour opened a used-helicopter lot on 5th Avenue. She no longer is Pat Trebour, but the 'Mad Madame, ' dealer in helicopters with a heart. Hazel Dukes joined the Army and is now atop sergeant in charge of calisthenics. Hear her? 1,2,3, bend—lower over there!! pick it up now--1,2,3. bend 1,2,3, bend--faster-------- Having learned all the tricks of the trade, MerleneNelson is now the sole owner of 'Joward Hohnson's Inc.' Margaret Hill opened for fashionable beach resort in Indian Rocks. Among her clientele are high government officials of Zephyrhills. Of special note is the beautifully decorated Caucus Room featuring a varied cuisine and the soothing musical strains of Maggie and Her Madcap Five. Joan Braden got so much practice at 'slave-driving' while editing her school paper that she moved headquarters to Siberia and is managing one of the largest salt-mines up there, that is, she was at last reports. Of course you never can tell--here today, liquidated tomorrow. Well, St. Pete, there's no doubt where this crew is going to end up. Juniors. Seniors, and guests at 1952 Pirate Prom at the American Legion Hall. HHIHH The cast of Act Your Age, the Senior play of 1953, are as follows: Angy by Merlene Nelson; Jerry by Shirley Lanham; Cora by Lyndall Wheeler; Gadget Hoffen- flugel by Robert Jones; James Matson by Bill Sabin; Helga by Mildred Mattingly; Western Union Girl by Ginger Sawtelle; and Commander Stone by Roger Whitworth. The play revolved around a romance by the mails between two teen-agers and two sailors, and its hilarious results. ’Henry's Hired Aunt. the play presented by the Juniors of 1952, centers on the mixed up affairs of a young man with am- nesia. The cast included: Andy by Jim Welsch; Henry by Bill Sabin; Irma by Joan Braden; Reilly by Pat McGavern; Frank by Roger Whitworth; Nan by Mer- lene Nelson; Barbara by Margaret Hill; Theodosia by Mary Kate Witt; Greg by Tobey Smith; Madam Marvel by Pat Trebour; Clarissa by Mary Lou Richards; and Doris by Joan Myers.
