Eo'iz'or's note. , By Jay Allee Reflecting on my years at Yuma High, it is hard to believe that my senior year has come to an end. The many changes which have taken place in the last four years seem stranage - some seem so distant while others seem like yesterday. One classic example is the Old Ag building. lt was gone in the blink of an eye, thanks to bulldozers and dump trucks. But the construction of the research Center took several blinks . . . more blinks than even the school officials thought. But slowly the building was completed and is a shining jewel in Yuma High's skyline. Then there was Old Main. After many, many classes fthat's where yearbook, newspaper and photography was - in the basementj it was closed down, gutted and brought up to standard. With the school building at the seams, it will be good to have classes in that building again. But that won't happen until after summer. And we, of the class of 1986, will be long gone on our seperate ways. There were many new faces on campus this year. Mr. Clayton, a 1956 YHS graduate and former band director here, returned to his Criminal ways as principal. Mr. Vanderburg took over as athletic director and did the job of disciplinarian - what a job he did with cleanup details, in-school suspension and stern words for those who violated the Crime code. The assistant principal escaped the cold of Michigan for the frying pan of Yuma. Mrs. Colleen Hefner took over in the student activities office about mid year when friend and all-around good person Mrs. Bonnie MacNeill left Yuma. This was the last year for Mr. Bill Brennan, fine arts department chairman and drama director, and Mr. Carl Greenwell, advanced auto shop teacher, master of the motor and longtime wrestling coach. Both retired after what must have seemed like hundreds of years here. Then there was Mr. Flay Drysdale, master of old jokes and friend fsometimes foel of seniors since government was a requirement before parole - was appointed county superintendent of schools about Christmas time. He had been here so long he was on the origional YHS staff the was in the 1910 El Saguaroj teaching ancient history - only then it was current events. All the old timers will be missed. I have always loved working on the yearbook and becoming editor was a dream come true. It may have caused endless hours of work, but once you see this book I know it was worth it. The hassles with staffers, photographers and advi- sors now seem so minor. l am proud to be the editor of this, This year's cover, designed by I. Yuma High's Rod Fowler, was intend- the 76th 6dItIOl'1 of El Saguaro. ed to be a salute to the much-dis- God Bless each of you cussed Halley's Comet in its 76 year I cyc e. However, Halley wasn't nearly as spectacular as expected. The tragic events of January where the shuttle crew members including the first teacher in space, were killed kept space travel in the news. We use our cover to salute those who died in the effort. g'4'Qy,1X , I-li X: 2 EDITOFFS NOTE . I
