5' Criminal Haopsters Battle Teams Height This year's varsity basketball team cannot be accused of one thing, not trying. Though they had a disap- pointing year, 6-15, Coach McLendon felt that the team never gave less than a 1002 effort. The team started off the season slowly: it took them three games to get their first win. They still did better than many people thought they would. One of the biggest disappoint- ments of the season was the fact that they lost two games to cross-town rival Kofa Kings to relinquish the city crown for the first time in 9 years. Although the Kings finished very high in their division, the Crims lost the two games by a combined mar- gin of only 12 points. Many fans and other coaches had predicted a loss by twice that many points in just the first game alone. The team also had many highs. One was they went to the Parker Christmas Tourney as defending champions and were not picked to do much better than last. But they were the team that never said die. They easily defeated their first oppo- nent and took their second seated team into overtime before defeating them by just two points. In the cham- pionship game they fell victim to a high-tuned and all-senior squad from Blythe-Palo Verde. They were de- feated but they had won a personal match by taking home a runner-up trophy and having one person, Jeff Mangis, selected to the all tourna- ment team. Next year's team should be an- other one like this year's. Very small with a certain amount of quickness. But they will have one more big as- set, experience. QQ This year's team, left to right, senlor guard Ernle Vasquez, junior guard Tony Flores, senlor swlngman Jeff Mangis, junior swlngman Mike Williams, sophomore forward Brion Drockert, senior center Roy Mendoza, senior forward David Vhlte, junior guard Ronny Ozuna, soph- omore guard Terry Shaw. and junior guard Roy Alvarado. In front of the team ls 19-year- head coach Mr. Bob McLendon and team man- ager Eddle Qulntero.
