But most would prefer to remember the first end and forget the middle. It was the first game of the season and for the first time in nine years it looked as though Yuma could win. They were under the direction of first- year head coach Gary Ventura, and he had brought this team something new, confidence. For the first time they believed in themselves. And it payed off. They walked off the field 20-6 winners. They had done what no other Yuma team of the '70s had done. And it was, as any of them will tell you, a total team effort. Everyone played a part. But the middle would like to have been forgotten. They couldn't find the magic they had had against Kofa. They lost the next eight games in a row by mostly blow-out scores. Out of the whole season, they never won a game at home. They finished off the year with a 36-10 win over Arcadia.
