It was the beginning of a profitable academic and social experience for the freshmen and the ending of an important part of the seniors' lives. Throughout this book we will record the steps we have taken in increasing our knowledge while building lasting friendships. The staff of El Saguaro has chosen the theme of School Lifen to represent the progress we have made during our brief stay at Yuma High. ! - 'fl Lf 1 2 is? Henry M ariiuez Henry Martinez 4 ...........Wc alutelfoufll Yuma High is my school and I want every- one to be as proud of it as I am. That is how Assistant Principal Henry Martinez sums up his feelings for his Alma Mater. He has always felt that way about the Blue and VVhiteg from his freshman days when he let- tered in football weighing 130 pounds soaking wetv til in 1939 as a senior he returned a quick kick in the season opener, ran it 75 yards for a touchdown, and went on to letter in football, basketball, and track. His education was interrupted by WWII and his service in the navy. After the war he completed his degree requirements at ASC Flag- staff, added boxing to his list of athletic accomp- lishments, and married the Campus F iestav Queen at Arizona State. Williams, Arizona, was the scene of his early teaching and coaching days. It was also the period of his life that he acquired his love for hunting and hound dogsf, His acceptance by the stu- dents and citizens of VVilliams was further at- tested to by his appointment as Principal of the Williams High School. Five years ago the desire to return to his hometown was fulfilled when he was offered an administrative position at his Alma Mater. During these years he has endeared himself to teachers and students alike and all who have come in con- tact with him know his intense desire to keep Yuma High second to none. We have found him to be strict without being unfair, he has handled the difficult task of school disciplinarian with firm but gentle hands and has eamed the respect of every Crim with whom he has come in contact. With sincere appreciation and fond affec- tion we dedicate the 1963 El Saguaro to a man who was a worthy Crim, while a student at YHS, and has returned to dedicate his knowledge and enthusiasm to making better Crims of all of us. FOR THE Seniors it was the last opportunity to do so many things that has been left undone before, such as that last chance to raise grades, to attend all the games, dances, and plays, to make new friends and to become better friends with the old ones. AT THE same time it was the first chance to perhaps do a little fortune tell- ing into the future. By now most Seniors had decided what they plan to do after graduation: college, jobs, or marriage. Good Luck Class of '63! WELL CLASS of '64, you finally made it! Yuma High is yours now. We wish you the best of luck in carrying on the traditions of YHS. Have fun and work hard in your Senior year. OUR SOPHOMORE class is eagerly awaiting the arrival of next September when they can call themselves upperclassmen and be a part of the 'Kruling classi' on campus. 1966 SEEMS to be so far in the future for the Freshmen, that very few of them gave it even a momentls thought. But all too soon the four years will have vanished and graduation will be upon them, just as the end of their Freshman year seemed to disappear. EACH AND everyone of us has given a part of our lives to a school that has redeemed that small part a thousand times over. Judy Needham, Pam Dewhirst and Mary Cray L K For the second time in its history of over fifty years, Yuma High School had a girl for its Stu- dent Body President. Twenty-four years ago in 1939, there was a girl president and in 1963, there was another, Sally Thomas. Sally is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. Harold Thomas. She was bom here in Yuma on May 20, 1945. Her grammer school days were spent at Roose- velt, Post, and Fourth Avenue junior High Schools. She has been a Crim for the past four years. During her fifth, sixth, and eighth grades, Sally served on the student council. She was elected to the Yuma High Student Council her sophomore and junior years, where she served as junior and sopho- more class representative. Her junior year, Sally was elected as State Secre- 81 Soouoro Honor oily Cholozos tary for Cirl's League and selected as a Yuma High representative to Cirl's State, where she was elected Mayor of the City. While in high school, she was active in varsity tennis her sophomore and junior years, varsity band her freshman year, treasurer for Cirl's League her sophomore year and was a mem- ber of NHS, SNHS, Anchor, Warden's, Drama Clubs. She was also a member of the Senior Class Play. So you see, leadership just seems to come natural for this girl. Her job as Student Body President was indeed challenging and Sally met the responsibility with maturity and eagerness. Sally, in voicing the feelings of the entire Student Body, we offer our heartiest congratulations and thanks for a tremendously well-done job. Again-Thank youl if I 1 b. .I-v' il 1 I . , 'R I ,4 ck 140 wledgemcufs , R. - Z' At this time, I wish to thank each and everyone who - helped make this book possible. Being her first year as yearbook advisor, Mrs. lean Walker , was always ready to help me over the rough spots. In editing a yearbook there are many. Cheryl Morrison, Assistant Editor, was in charge of the X School Life section and was always available to give any L necessary advice. 71 I never had to worry about the financial department be- cause it was in the capable hands of Pam Pike, Business Manager, and her assistant, Naomi Ferro. , I Iohn Burnett, Advertising Manager, was unable to remain on the staff but Nancy Battenfield, Assistant Advertising Manager, tackled the job beautifully. Carole Slosser helped on the sports section along with Bentley Breech, Sue :fl Skeoington, and myself. Tom Allt, Head Photographer, developed many pictures for the annual as- sisted by Louie Alexander and julie Fritz. Bentley Breech and Sandra Sirrine . also helped with the printing of some of the pictures. - Art Editor, Virginia Sehierling, designed the beautiful cover. She was also - in charge of Honors and Leadershipf, The art staff included4Valerie Keene, 1- Sandra Sirrine, Penny Griffin and Beverly Uhl, Assistant Art Editor. In charge of the faculty section was Sandra Sirrine and john Kosmata. John also did much to help in the Fine Artsv section. Penny Griffin did a tremendous job on the class plays. Beverly Uhl -was in charge of the seniors. Valerie Keene did the juniors while Anita Renteria and Beatriz Arias were in charge of underclassmen. Both , Anita and Bea were ready and willing to help in the sports section. Clubs,' were done by Gloria Orozco, assisted by Sharon Grijaloa. They both . helped with the sports section. ,, Thanks are also in line for Updike Studios who took the class and club pic- . ures. I would like to express my thanks to Mr. Mel Wakefield, Newsfoto Publish- - ing Company, for his time and valuable assistance, to the Yuma Daily Sun who allowed us to use some of their pictures, and to Craft Photography who donated the memorial picture. - For our theme, the staff chose School Life and Silh0uettes.D For their -' Q. kind help and assistance in helping us produce our divisionals, I would like to , thank Betty Knapp, Roy Miller, Mr. Robert Weete and Duke Spelce. Thanksv is all I can say to the School Administration, the Faculty, and the W. School Personnel and to all whom I might have missed. ' ' I have enjoyed being editor this year. All the hard work in putting this .- annual together was worth it because now this book is no longer mine, it is yours - to enjoy always. - ' Sincerely, . . 1 A Lupe Rosas I ' Editor-in-Chief - .
