933350 From the lowly position of teacher in a one-room school on the Northem Arizona strip, Warren B. Sirrine was initiated to the responsibilities of an administrative career when he became principal of the Mohawk Valley School in 1935. Three years later he assumed the principalship of the Crane School District, where his efforts to make Crane School second to none were eminently successful. In 1956 he was approached by the YUHS Board of Education, and accepted the position of District Superintendent. In his high school years at Mesa, and later at ASC Flagstaff, he was acclaimed an outstanding competitor, and small wonder, since he once held the state broad jump record and lettered four years in football and track. At the University of Southern California where he received his rnaster's degree and continues his graduate pro- fessional study, our superintendent is known for his devotion to education and his basic philosophy that all youth should be educated to the highest degree compatible with their intellectual potential. Sports events, traveling, and fishing are his choices for those infrequent opportunities he finds to relax from his obligations to the district, and it is on these occasions he finds time to devote to his wife and family. As a professional educator he has been an active member of the NEA and the Arizona Education Association, serv- ing on numerous state level committees. On the community level he proves a willing volunteer worker on various civic affairs committees and is Sunday School Superintendent of his church. All such activities, added to the problems of a growing district that recently required a complete new school plant, have called for wise budgeting of time and a maximum of leadership. As educational leader of the district, our superintendent has worked continuously with the professional staff to revise course offerings in keeping with the rapidly changing technology and culture of our times. His positive approach to problems of good citizenship on the high school campus has had a major effect on desirable changes of attitude toward sportsmanship, academic excellence, grooming, and conduct. We who have witnessed these accomplishments have been instilled with a spirit of pride in our school and a desire to pass on our legacy to those who will follow. Prompted by the nearly three decades of tireless effort expended in the task of moulding the minds and char- acters of Arizona youth, grateful for his many accomplishments on our behalf at Yuma High School, inspired by his confidence in our individual ability and worth, we proudly dedicate the 1961 edition of the El Saguaro to our Superin- tendent, Warren R. Sirrine, and wish him increasing success in the years ahead. 5
