Sirrine was initiated to the responsibilities of an administrative career when he became principal of the Mohawk Valley School in 1935. Three years later he assumed the principalship of the Crane School District, where his efforts to make Crane School second to none were eminently successful. In 1956 he was approached by the YUHS Board of Education, and accepted the position of District Superintendent. In his high school years at Mesa, and later at ASC Flagstaff, he was acclaimed an outstanding competitor, and small wonder, since he once held the state broad jump record and lettered four years in football and track. At the University of Southern California where he received his rnaster's degree and continues his graduate pro- fessional study, our superintendent is known for his devotion to education and his basic philosophy that all youth should be educated to the highest degree compatible with their intellectual potential. Sports events, traveling, and fishing are his choices for those infrequent opportunities he finds to relax from his obligations to the district, and it is on these occasions he finds time to devote to his wife and family. As a professional educator he has been an active member of the NEA and the Arizona Education Association, serv- ing on numerous state level committees. On the community level he proves a willing volunteer worker on various civic affairs committees and is Sunday School Superintendent of his church. All such activities, added to the problems of a growing district that recently required a complete new school plant, have called for wise budgeting of time and a maximum of leadership. As educational leader of the district, our superintendent has worked continuously with the professional staff to revise course offerings in keeping with the rapidly changing technology and culture of our times. His positive approach to problems of good citizenship on the high school campus has had a major effect on desirable changes of attitude toward sportsmanship, academic excellence, grooming, and conduct. We who have witnessed these accomplishments have been instilled with a spirit of pride in our school and a desire to pass on our legacy to those who will follow. Prompted by the nearly three decades of tireless effort expended in the task of moulding the minds and char- acters of Arizona youth, grateful for his many accomplishments on our behalf at Yuma High School, inspired by his confidence in our individual ability and worth, we proudly dedicate the 1961 edition of the El Saguaro to our Superin- tendent, Warren R. Sirrine, and wish him increasing success in the years ahead. 5 Ci? Moody, Clerk We now proudly present to you the members of the Yuma Union High School District Board of Education. This group of people, are elected by the district to carry on the responsibilities of conducting the school business and its affairs. We owe to each one a special vote of thanks for their continual efforts on behalf of our school, the student body, and school employees. We would now like to acknowledge this group of truly dedicated members of our community. Patrick K. Hodges, Member Helene T. Bennett, Member Robert W. Consaul, Member P Mr. Sirrine-The dedication pages have expressed our feelings for our superintendent. This is the highest honor we can bestow and there seems little more to say. Mr. fWhen I was coach at Scottsdalel Manes is famous not only for his stirring pep speeches but for being one of the most popular administrators in the state. 11 Mr. Martinez-In his junior year at YHS is progressing very satis- factorily. It is rumored that he will graduate as an administrator of the highest standing next year. -shit 1 -, Registrar-Mr. Biltz uv D gg? Searbrough, achieved the coveted position of valedictorian of her class with an average of 102857. Diana has, during the past four years, been active in SHAC, girl's chorus, National Honor Society, Art Club, and Spanish National Honor Society. She also wrote Crim's Corner and was Student Body Sec- retary this past year. After graduation, she plans to work and attend Grand Canyon College in Phoenix. Her major will be English education and her minor Bible. Diana says she likes best to see young people stand up for their personal convictions regardless of opposition from the crowd. I QXMN The salutatorian honors of the Class of 1961 went to Mary Chilton. Mary is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney S. Woods. Before moving to Yuma, she lived in Corsicana, Texas, for nine years. Her average for her four years at YHS was L06250. Anchor, Modeling, Lyre's, Drama, Melody, VVarden's, and Latin Clubs have taken up much of her time. Mary has also been active in band and concert choir and was honored with the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award and chosen Zonta Girl for October. Mary plans to attend Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She is undecided as to her major, but her interests lie in psychology, English, and Foreign languages. Nancy XVillard did. This attractive girl, who works for a publisher, is engaged to Parker Bumett. Then Amelia Bullock, her landlady and owner of a delightful old house, dies at the age of 103. Nancy learns that she has been left something named Nathaniel Coombes. Nathaniel is a young and handsome Revolutionary soldier who had been ambushed and killed in 1776 and is now doomed to an earth-bound existence as a ghost in the neighbor- hood of Nancy's apartment. He cannot get into heaven because he has failed to deliver a message to George Washington. It was all the fault of a pretty bar-maid, who caused him to forget his duty. Nancy, incidentally, is the only living being who can see Nathaniel. When Charley Stewart, an attractive young newspapemran, comes to Nancy's apartment seeking data on the late Miss Bullock, Nancy finds her life even more complicated, since there are now three young men fif we include Nathaniell interested in her. It is Charley, of course, who learns how to exorcise the ghost and win Nancy away from Parker. But it is Nathaniel who ultimately enables Nancy to choose the right husband, and on his ac- complishing this he gains admittance to heaven, after winning Washington's approval - with the help of the bar-maid. 107 N T ig 5 Aix , im? 5.-3 U0-H0 Q S 9 s I S ' f K 15 il Back To School CALENDAR OF EVENTS 6-School Begins 8-Frosh and Soph Forums 9-Freshman Handshake Dance junior and Senior Forums 12-16-Smile Week Cri.m Varsity at Tucson 21-Frosh Football vs. Kofa 22-I. Steve has been honored with the position of President of Key Club International, which covers not only the United Szates, but also Canada. He was a delegate to the Key Club Conventions in Toronto and rn Boston. As an intemational trustee of Key Club, he rep- resented Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Idaho. Arizona Boys' State saw fit to elect Steve Governor of Boys' State. Ever since his Freshman year, Steve has participated in Student Council. As a Fresh- man and also as a Sophomore, he was elected the class representative. During his junior year, the AMS elected him as their representative to the Student Council. This past year Steve was student body social znanager. His activities in student council extended nationwide as a delegate to the convention of the National Association of Student Councils in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, also statewide as chairman of the Arizona Association of Student Councils. Latin, Lettermen's, and V7arden's clubs plus tennis and football are some more of the activities that Steve has been in. He was also a delegate to Arizona Anytown. In spite of all of these or tside activities, Steve has maintained a high academic record and ranked ninth in his class. He was a recipiant of the S4000 Phelps- Dodge Scholarship to the University of Arizona. We of the El Saguaro feel that it speaks for the entire school when we express in,this small way our pride and congratulations to Steve Copple, Steve will take a part of Yuma High away but a part of Steve will remain to give inspiration to those who will take his place. Steve Copple, we salute ycu. 195 .. wma-xv-. Y- . . ..,.-.Y ,,,.,,q,.,,,,,,,P, ' V --WN-nh WWW, A As I write this letter, before me lie the last of the pages which remain to be sent in. It doesnit seem quite possible that another school year has sped to the past. I do not think anyone can realize the sweat, blood, and tears that must be shed to put together an annual, unless they have been on an annual staff. We, speaking for the staff, had our share of excitement - even to the extent of having the senior class pictures disappear. As I look back on these past nine months, I am afraid I am inclined to become a little sentimental. New friends, new experiences, and another annual to be placed in the archives of the history of Yuma High. This annual would never have been possible without the cooperation and hard work of: Mr. Tom Clarkin, our advisor, always seemed to have the right answers to all my questions. We could never have gotten along without him. Pat Arnold, the associate editor, proved a willing and cheerful worker. I never had to worry about the financial department, because it was in the capable hands of Rosemary Barnes and her assistant Judy Fletcher. How do you like the art work? My thanks go to the art staff headed by Susie Scott. The other members of this staff were Mary Crowder, Virginia Schierling, Amy Wilson, and Ann Burtch. Valerie Keene, Olga Olea, and Beverly Ulil had the big job of class panels. They made a most efficient trio. Pam Pike handled the plays section better than ever. Darlene Ridenour, Virginia Shipp, and Evelyn Fraunfelder offered time, hard work, and good ideas, for which I am grateful. Johnny Morales did a great job with the sports section. Garey Wallace not only did his own section, but was ready and willing to help in any way he could. Susan Dinwidclie and Vern Wall handled all the photography. My thanks to them for all the extra hours they put in to help make this annual a success. I wish I could devote more space to each and every member of the staff. I would like, though, to take this opportunity to extend to each person with whom I worked, my heartfelt thanks for their sincerity and cooperation in publishing this annual. I could not have wished for a more competent and jovial staff with which to work. My thanks go also to the New York Hearald Tribune, who so graciously permitted us to use Miss Peach as our theme. To Mr. and Mrs. UpDike goes my appreciation for the wonderful job they did with the class pictures. The Yuma Daily Sun provided us with many needed pictures. Newsfoto did the fine job of publication. If I have missed anyone on this acknowledgment page, please forgive me. It is certainly unintentional. Thanks seem to be so futile, and yet that is all I can find to say. So thank you one and all for making this a cherished year for my album. This annual is now a part of the past. The work is done. It no longer belongs to my staff and I, but to you. It is yours. I hope you will enjoy it always.
