EL SAGUARO The publication of an annual entails a great amount of work as those of the staff readily know. This activity took them from S-13 all around the campus searching for pictures and ideas for copy. With the dead- line forever coming closer and closer, the pace became more hurried. But the deadline was met and now it was completedg the staff wi ed its brow and gave a deep sigh of reliefp and maybe for the senior members of the staff, a little of regret that the year had ended and the El Saguaro for 1960 had been finished. We hope you enjoy it. r l How many annuals did we sell? Joyce White, our business manager, was the one who could tell you, for she had the task of selling annuals and keeping track of the money. Barbara Bess, Associate Editor, jessica Reiss, Assistant Editor, and Betty Prather, Managing Edi- tor, filled their respective positions to the utmost. They helped make this annual a success. 44-EL SAGUARO I pw The Senior members of the staff carried a great deal of the load in the publication of the annual. Their experience aided greatly in the final product. The Senior members were: Fran McCollum, Sharon Logan, Elizabeth Airiola, Bertha Arias, Ann Harrell, Judy Vaughn. The new members of the staff found the year a most informative and enjoyable one. They worked and learned about the publication of a yearbook. As the year draws to a close they look back on time well spent and well worthwhile and look forward to next year on the El Saguaro staff. They were: Pat Arnold, Alicia Mumford, Mary Chilton, Virginia Shipp, Darlene Ridenour, Evelyn Frauenfelder. Sis Golden, typist, Linda Barnette, Advertising Manager, Shirley Spelce, Assistant Business Manager, undertook not only their own responsibilities but also seemed to find time to help the newer members of the staff with their layouts and copy. it I-J V Three more competent members of the staff were Buddy Bogle, Wayne Shannon, and Victor Torres. They worked on art and photography for the annual. Reporters: Shelia Sands, Glenda Morris, Fran Hoggatt. Keeping pace with the space age and the nb82Itl'likn influence, the story portrayed a Martian cub reporter from the Mars Daily Planet, who visited the Earth to gather material for an exclusive feature. There, really here, he met Lola, a beatnik, who showed him the scene. In the grand finale, a colorful wedding was held on Mars climaxing the return of NVhat and his fiancee, Lola. The business being that of finding oil under the very cafe in which they were sitting. The President had a wonderful background for this type of business, for he had passed counterfeit notes, taken pa1't in the narcotics business and other things making him president of eleven corporations, director of fifty-two companies, and other things too numerous to mention. But so much for the President. It seems logical that business could be discussed in the nice atmosphere of a little cafe quite freely. But how can you discuss business when a street singer sings La Belle Polonaiseng the flower girl asks if you,d like some violets, the ragpicker wants to know if you've dropped a hundred-franc note Cas if all money found lying around wasn't yoursjg the Deaf Mute lets you know that itis a wonderful morning but would have been much nicer if he hadn't seen you. And if that isnit enough, the shoelace peddler wonders if you really don't need new shoestringsg the Street Juggler juggles according to the stock market prices, and the Madwoman of Chaillot comes in and asks for her bones and gizzard!! VVhile all these interruptions and distractions have taken place you have rolled water under your tongue to taste the oil that supposedly is under the cafe. When you are finally settling down a little, in walks a policeman carrying your assistant. The policeman says he has drowned and begins to administer artificial respiration, even though the man isn't even wet. He explains that he must go by the book even though he caught and slugged the man before he jumped in. So on it went, The Madwoman of Chaillot proved to be a hilarious comedy. The Junior Class did a wonderful job of presenting it under the direction of Miss Coon. It was one of the most talked about plays presented on the stage of Yuma Union' High School. Our heartiest congratulations to the Junior Class for a job very well done. This purpose is carried out in the two programs which make up the AFS Americans Abroad-the Summer Program and the School Program. Under the AFS Summer Program, American teenagers represent their schools, communities and the United States while living with foreign families for 6 to 7 weeks. ln becoming the Soni, or daughter,' of these families, they share in their daily life and usual summer activities, plus also having the opportunity of teaching their foreign family and friends about the United States, and in so doing build a real understanding between the peoples of the world. The School Program is essentially the same as the Summer Program. However, in addition to sharing the daily life of their foreign families, these students have the opportunity of entering into the school life of their host countries. The school program lasts approximately five monthsf' ' This represents a great opportunity to those who have a sincere interest in going to a foreign country and representing not only his school, but his country also. Many of our own students have found it to be a most rewarding experience. Our school should be very proud of its opportunity to participate in such a program. It has been a wonderful experience. I have learned your way of living and to speak your language, I certainly have profited from my stay in all ways. It is my hope also, that at least some of you have profited from having me attend your school this year. Thank you very much, jan Andersen . eg- MY TRIP TO ITALY by Mike Mains This year as a Foreign Exchange Student I represented Yuma and the United States in Italy. XVhcn Laura Leigh Finch was chosen to go to Denmark I dismissed the thoughts of participating in the Exchange pro- gram as the plan had been to send one, so when the American Field Service wi1'ed me to be in New York ready to sail for Italy in tcn days, it came as a complete surprise. Those were certainly hectic days, trying to get the necessary shots, vaccinations, passport, clothing, and learning as much about the customs and language as possible in the short time allowed. And I didnit find out who my family was or where in Italy they lived until I reached New York. june 17th we flew by chartered plane carrying 97 students from Los Angeles to New York, there we were briefed and the same day boarded a Holland American ship named Zuiderkruis. XVe had ten days at sea, with about 750 other Exchange students going to various parts of Europe. YVe landed in Rotterdam, Holland, and traveled by train through Europe to Italy. My family was the Domineco Mar- colongosi, consisting of Mother, Father, and two sons, Alfredo 16, and Inganizo 24. They were a wonderful family and lived in Attessa, a community of 10,000 population located approximately 250 miles east of Rome, near the Adriatic Sea. My summer was the most quiet and relaxed I have ever spent, life moves at a slower pace in Italy. Eating starchy foods and having little exercise I gained 1:2 pounds, as I lived the life of a typical Italian boy in a provincial community. I learned a great deal from this experience . . . and feel that they learned new things about the United States from mc. For one thing I dis- illusioned the small boys on the 'Cowboy and Indian, situation in Arizona. 'WVrapping up the summer was a I0 day tour of southern Italy with all the Exchange students in Italy. WVe visited Pom- pei, Naples, Sorrento, and ended up in Rome having an audience with the Pope and the President of Italy. On September 3, we flew home via Shannon, Ireland, and hurried back to school, bringing an end to the most exciting summer of my lifef' UNCSEXXSQ WW WW, wary CWMN1 ,xml use +LbQ.lQ NWQUOI I f fipjj Mike Mains MY TRIP TO DENMARK by Laura Leigh Finch The people in Denmark were most friendly and they especially were to me since I was a foreigner. They were always asking me questions about what the thought it was like in the U.S. For instance they asked me if, all Americans were rich. Quite a few people have cars but onl the rich people can afford American cars. Another time a lady asked me if my mother cooked dinner for my father. They allso wanted to know if there were many juvenile delinquents here or at least as many as they heard about. If a person would like to gain weight, I recommend going to Denmark or any where in Europe for that matter. I was lucky and only gained 7 pounds but one of m friends gained 32. f Her family must have had at least six meafs a day.J Copenhagen, the capital, is a very exciting place to go if you're in Denmark. Tivoli Gardens, a super amusement park, the Little Mermaid statue, and the Tuborg brewery are good things to see. When we were there, we were taken on a guided tour of the beer brewery and when it was over were given samples of their products. They also manufacture soft drinks. You say youire going to Denmark? Take me along-I'm always willing to go back. kgs., Q Laura Leigh Finch. . .M YJWNQ ff' f wir? 9 lj w f -VW N Sf rffwf af? is f 5 any if s X rl ew w is yi QT, if 5 'P Q JJ N5 ix' - I N A xi gg' N Q, gtk? ACK GWLEDGEME TS I am truly grateful for those who contributed their ideas and their time in order to produce a good 1960 year- book. The staff this year was large which added variety and character to this year's El Saguaro. Mr. Clarkin, even with his broken leg, was always available to advise me and help me over the rough spots, as in editing a yearbook there are many. Barbara Bess and Belly Prather, managing and associate editor respectively, were a steading influence because of their experience. Barbara did the sports, Betty worked with W'ayne Shannon and Victor Torres to produce the art work. Joyce IVl1iie was in charge of the money and business end of the production. She and Shirley Spelce always had things ship-shape in their own quiet way. Again this year we had super advertising salesmen with Linda Barneffe carrying the major load. Jolly Sis Golden worked both as an ad salesman and as a speedy typist. Assistant Editor jessica Reiss did her work handily with much efficiency. Berflra Arias was a great worker and she did all she was asked to do and much more. Even with all the headaches which picture detail brings, Elizabeth Arriola skillfully scheduled picture after picture very successfully. The Senior Members all did an outstanding job as they toiled many hours to come up with their completed sec- tions. Ann Harrell, Slzaron Logan, Fran McCollum, and fully Vaughn were those ideal workers and associates. Par Arnold, Mary Chilton, Evelyn Frauenfelfler, Virginia Garvin, Darlene Hiflenour, Rosemary Barnes, and Vir- ginia Slzipp were new to the staff this year. I would have though they were old pros,', however, to see them working on the annual. Buddy Bogie was the staff photographer who spent much of his valuable time taking pictures for me. Last but not least on the staff was our only sophomore, Alicia Mumford. Alicia spent many hours thinking of new ideas and intersting layouts for the El Saguaro. I know Alicia will make a dedicated editor in a few years. I would like to thank Mr. Earl UpDike of UpDike Studios, who took a majority of our pictures, the Yuma Daily Sun for allowing us to use their pictures, they were life-savers, and Mr. Bill Messenger for our fine ad pictures. I would also like to express my thanks to M r. Mel Ufakefielcl, of Newsfoto Publishing Co., for his time and valua- ble assistance, to the School Administration, the Faculty, and the School Personnel, and to all those many people I might have missed. I enjoyed being editor this year, it was a grand and long-lasting experience. Sincerely, Qlaawzal .g-.' ,, . f .. f A '- -X - 'iw bf - f' J . '3 -4 N 417. 1 , 9 'NV 15' v 'V' ' 4 J' r 1. 1 - .
