H.S, in the fall of '49, After erasing all the walls, we calmed down somewhat and got to business. Officers were: Ruth Trute, President, Glen Powell, Vice President, Dick Dedrick, Secretary, and Duane Robertson, Student Council Representative. We were ready and rearin' to go our Sophomore year, The Echo Valley boys formed their band that year and made a big hit, We chose as officers: Dick Stallings, President, Glen Powell, Vice President, David Bradley, Secretary, Shirley Parrish, Treasurer, and Clara Hillman, Student Council Representative. As Juniors we considered ourselves quite grown up, Our class play was 'Meet Me in St. Louis' which was at least a financial success, Our prom theme was Stardust and was the biggest event of the year. Our leaders were: Leon Mekelburg, President, Glen Powell, Vice President, Ruth Trute, Secretary, Phyllis Morrison, Treasurer, and Roger Herman, Student Council Representative. We finally achieved our goal of becoming Seniors and what is to come we know not, but we will always cherish the memories of Good Old Yuma High. As I sit here gazing into my crystal ball, I am wondering what is ahead for the class of '53, Aha!! What is this I see? Behold! It is now many years hence. Carolyn Beethe is giving lectures to fellow old maids on Why Women are Superior to Men. Dale and Doyle Beverly have just received the coveted best ranch award given them for their model six acre chicken ranch. LaVeta Buethe has just been crowned Queen of the Amazons in Mogo-Wogo, Brazil, Jerry Bushner has finally succeeded, He is well known as the craziest, fastest, and most daring hot-rod driver to ever hit the hot-rod circuit. Mildred Chrismer while wearing that leopard cloth sunsuit, was mistaken for a rare red headed species of leopard and was accidently shot, though not badly hurt. Milton Chrismer still has the knack of being able to annoy people and make them like it. Maybe it IS the red hair. Zelda Cox is a famous model for Gimbel's in Timbuctoo, Allen Davis is still Stalling around. Dortha Davis, well known in Y,U, H, S. for the originality of her hair styles. is now associated with a swank beauty salon in Platner. Dick Dedrick is climbing fast. He is head window washer at Macy's Dept, Store in New York, Marlene Degenhart was shipwrecked while on her way to Brazil to pick up a few nuts. She has been res- cued in a rowboat paddled by Herb Damm. Curtis Franson is a famous scientist and is now making a study of the instincts of the hamma mono larubion. Jean Gaines has found great happiness. She has married a seven foot six inch basketball player. Rex Gardner has been highly honored for his splendid work with grasshoppers. It seems he finally located their source of supply for tobacco. Wanda Gardner is much in demand as a leading speaker on the care and feeding of baby armadillos. Patty Grauerholz is head telephone operator in Cold Point, Alaska. Only they don't have any phones in Cold Point do they? Leslie Hansen is now in uniform--bellboy at the Waldorf-Astoria, Roger Herman ls with the Pingley Sisters Circus where his pet fly, Florence, performs aerial aerobatics. This act was a smash hit when the circus played at Schramm. Jo Ann Hickman has just made her debut as an opera singer at the Met in Otis. Clara Hillman joined the Waves and volunteered for duty on Guam, There has been a BLACl-lout ever since. Betty Josh is head librarian at the Joes library, Shirley Lillich is a famous businesswoman and well known for driving a hard bargain, She is fourth vice- president of the Hammerhead Nail Company, Leon Mekelburg and Doris Rutledge are living on their three acre farm where they raise fleas for Maurice 's flea circus. Phyllis Morrison is in Africa and has been commended for her work with the S. C,P. B, E. fSociety for the Care and Protection of Baby Elephants.J Shirley Parrish has peroxided her long black hair and is playing the female lead in the Tarzan series. Mary Partch has joined the Waf's and is now a head cook in charge of potato peeling. Glen Powell is playing bass violin for a concert orchestra. Last heard of in Hawg Calling Corners. Georgia Loren Riley is chief medicine man for the Mogambje tribe in deepest Africa. Duane Robertson has married Paul Bunyan's daughter and retired. She is a lumberjack. Myrtle Rogers is widely known in business circles. She is running the general store out at Clarkville. Shirley Rutledge was mistaken for Santa Claus again last Christmas. Since she 's been a steeplejack most of her time is spent up on chimneys. Leslie Serl is known as 'Limber Les and is now appearing in Madison Square Gardens as its most noted wrestler. Florence Simons is editor of the advice to the lovelorn column in the Abarr Gazette. Pat Smith seems to be hearing little Howells all over. Bill Snedeker is giving Billy Sunday some tough competition as a top notch revivalist. Wilbur Snelling is a renowned mathematician at Harvard University. Kenneth Sprouse has a double career. In the daytime he is a floor-walker for I. C. Penney's and at night he is a floorwalker for Junior. Dick Stallings has just patented a new invention--Windshield wipers on eye glasses. He expects to make at least a million from this invention. Everett Stuck has gone far with Duckwall's. All the way to Kokamunga, Alabama, where he's a head janitor. Lorrain Taladay has put that strange voice malady Qknown as cheerleader's hangoverj to work and is sub- bing for the fog horns on the San Francisco bay. Hugh Thompson has captured world fame for having concocted a better wallpaper paste and is fast becom- ing rich. Dale Van Horn is the highest paid professional basketball player in the world. Loretta Wise has put her home economics training to good use and hooked a rich Texas rancher. Carol Wolff seems to be an expert on chickens. Wonder if she runs a hatchery. 6111 5 Will The Senior Class of 1953, being of sound mind and body, do hereby bequeath the following valued possessions: Carolyn Beethe leaves six inches of height to Donna Stallings. G. GILLESPIE SY NOP SIS This play takes place in the apartment of two college boys, Tom Arsdale and Oke Stimson. It is close to graduation time and Tom is preparing for the arrival of his father, aunt, and supposed-to-be girl friend, Tom receives word that they are coming sooner than he had expected, His father wants him to become engaged to Sylvia Web- ster, the supposed-to-be girl friend, before he graduates. Tom does not like this par- ticular girl and so he and Oke fix up a make-believe engagement with Babs Sanford, who is masquerading as the cleaning woman, Birdie Laverne. This engagement both surprises and angers Mr, Arsdale. He and Tom get into a few lively quarrels over the matter, but they are all in vain as far as Mr, Arsdale is con- cerned, When he turns to Caroline for assistance, he finds her on Tom's side of the argument. So Mr, Arsdale devises a plan in which he uses Chuck Mayo, who is search- ing for his girl, Birdie Laverne. This plan would go into action that evening when the girls were getting ready for the masquerade dance. But what Mr. Arsdale doesn't know is that Babs and Sylvia have exchanged costumes, As you may have already guessed, Chuck gets the wrong girl and gets into trouble. Sylvia, too, is very angry at both parties for having pulled such a trick on her, However, everything ends well when Sylvia switches her affection to Alfred Tennyson Murgatoyd, the class poet, Tom wins the argument permanently by asking Babs to make that fake engagement a real one, Oke has his interest trained on one of the girls at the college, Peaches Carter, And never fear, Caroline has grabbed a very sophisti- cated college dean, Dean Marlow, Asma, the Negro maid who is popping in and out of the play and making you laugh till your sides ache, ends the play beautifully with the statement: There's nobody girl shy here. Scott, T, Blomstrom, K, Serl, Twenty-five boys reported to Coach O'Brien in September to check out football equip- ment, The Little Indians ended the season in November with one won and three lost record, The first game was the conference opener with Akron, Playing at Akron in a severe wind storm, Yuma fell to the Akron juniors 12 to 6, Wray came to Yuma for the second game and opened with a three touchdown burst in the first quarter and an 18 to 0 half time advantage. Yuma opened the second half with a fine display of football and scored early in the third quarter but the Wray defense proved too much for the Little Indians and they fell 18 to 6, The third game of the season found Akron at iuma, Playing before the largest crowd of the season the Little Indians scored on the first play from scrimmage and then settled down to a strong defensive game and won a well earned 6 to 0 victory over Akron, The final game of the season was played at Wray. The Little Braves had little trouble moving the ball until they reached the Wray twenty yard line and there the Eaglet de- fense stiffened and held the Red and White team to no gain, After a fine exhibition of grade school football by both teams, the game ended 21 to 6 in favor of Wray. In the conference opener the Akron team came to Yuma and won a three point victory after one overtime period, The second conference game was at Wray where the Little Indians lost a hard fought game, After leading throughout the game, the Yuma defense fell apart in the final minute and the Eaglets won by two points. The grade school team entered the Lindon Invitational Tournament and fought their way to the consolation semi-finals where they were beaten by a fine Seibert team. In the opening game of the tourney the Little Indians lost to the Kirk Panthers 27 to 20 and came back to win their second game from Vernon 38 to 31, lf' ' 4,yr',Nihy - I Ay ' A ,Q 1' M1 3 if 3' . The Indians showed their superiority through- out the game but were unable to score. By a lucky break the Goodland team was able to score and we lost the game 6-0, We then played our first conference game at Haxtun. Again we came out second best with the score '7-6 in favor of Haxtun. Our second conference game was played at Fleming. The Indians really went to town and we bested Fleming 48-6. Our Homecoming game was played against Iulesburg. Iulesburg, being the lightest team in our conference, was thought to be a fairly easy opponent. But they proved otherwise and after a hard- fought battle the game ended in a 6-6 tie. On October 22 we played the Akron Ramblers. The Indians played a great game that night and beat them 25-14. Holyoke journeyed to Yuma the following week. Yuma played a good game against a team which was unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon by any team in our conference with the score coming out 52-0 in their favor, Our season ended with the traditional Armistice Day game, played at Wray, The Indians fought a fierce battle with the Eagles, but the Eagles came out ahead 13-0, Var ity Letterman A, C, --All Conference GLEN POWELL DOYLE BEVERLY MILTON CHRISMER Cen. 3'4' T. 3'4' A.
