Yes, you're typical teens-Go steady--about five months--Dress up-heels for her--tie for him-You know how to drive-rely on the family bus-get it-say twice a week. You snack, watch television, listen to the radio while doing home work. You're a typical high school student--You go out for sports one hundred per cent-You hold down a job-baby sit-sometimes into the early hours of morning-You work in stores-garages--up late-little spare time. Your daily schedule is a familiar pattern of high school life-get up at 7:30-maybe 8:00--sometimes oversleep-ride the bus--go at break-neck speed to cafeteria for lunch-drink cokes--munch candy bars and hot dogs -now and then you order a real feed-You enjoy school but hate to admit it-study some-three hours a night-no--a week-average C -well D -Anyway you make the grade-just-but you're satisfied because you are a teenager. And so since you have all these qualities be they good or bad, ludicrous, pathetic, or otherwise, we HDEDICATE THIS 1954 HONKER TO YOU, THE SENIORS OF THE YUBA CITY UNION HIGH SCHOOL. ,-- f' eww ' 0 0 O 5 6- MG' NN XKUNRU KW XRl'5TY,Y,5 Nh, Yan 'l.1uuh. Our Thanks and Appreciation to the Faculty We, the editors of the 1954 Honker, would like to take this opportunity to express, on behalf of the Senior Class, our deep thanks and appreciation to the faculty and administration. They have repri- manded us,'helped us, and consoled us when it was necessary. Working under crowded, trying conditions, they have never been too busy to give us aid in our studies or advise us in our extra- curricular activities and have, in general, done a most wonderful job in preparing us for later life. We haven't nearly the space to list the things that these men and women have done for us, nor do we have the vocabulary to express what they mean to us, we can only say, simply and sincerely . . . L1-fr: llillmllm-ton looks like he is blocking rvfcrcv SEASON SUMMARY The big boys started the season with high hopes, stemming from the ten returning lettermen. includ- ing all-league fullback Dan Owens. The 35 boys who comprised the squad worked together for two weeks in the spring and another two weeks before school started under the careful vigil of coaches Bob Frye and Lane Ernst and second-year student manager. John lnnes. Two non-league games and scrimmages provided pre-league experience but cost in injuries the ser- vices of Ron Smith. Avery Blankenship. Frank Car- toscelli, and Bob Wisner for various lengths of time. ,A wwf! . at als- 7' 'Wi' CONVERSION TEAM-W'isner holding. Owens kicking. Team's Punter OWENS Going into league play with substitutes at key posts, we won our first three games before being upset by EI Camino. Following this loss, we gave Oroville her toughest victory. Then we stiffened and won our last two games of the season-the last our rival, Marysville. Picked for third, behind Oroville and Nevada, we came in second only to unbeaten Oroville. Owens, one of Northern California's top five scorers, re- ceived a trophy as the team's most valuable player. Big Dan's work in the San Juan game, in which he scored 31 of 33 points, was the outstanding individual performance of the year. One reason for the teamis showing was a general lack of experience. as several Freshmen played. Tackle Fred Sehneiter. guard Frank Sanclow. and general handy-man Scotty Kuhnen were the standout per- formers of a team that featured speed. Coach Turner has pleasant visions nf the future after the showing of a strong Frosh team tutored lay lluard Millet. DEFENSIVE TEAM , V E-i., it an I. ' , , . U K Q-t .' . Bill Fillmore and .Nl Schilling. the latter an all-league choice in 1952-33. Picked for the cellar. we surprised quite a few by coming in above Marysville and Placer while whipping fourth-place Roseville twice. Al Powell. Floyd Robertson. and Bill Revo Sher- wood. a trio that had little or no varsity experi- ence. developed fast and were great rebounders. with Sherwood showing at times a great scoring potential. Schilling. Fillmore. and ,lack Liles were good. consistent scorers and floor men: and Fill- more was chosen with Robertson to captain the team. REVIEW The low ebb of the season was reached when we dropped two of the three games and the Mather 81 Stewart Trophy to Marysville. Bright spot was the fact that Duard Millet. in his third year as varsity coach. developed what was considered to be one of the highest scoring teams in the league. ea -eaptmha Left: ROBERTSON-Husky Floyd. a transfer from Washington, had little basketball experience but quickly developed into one of the leagusfs finest rebound:-rs. There were no members of last year's cham- pionship C', squad on the 1954 team. This team never quite found itself, and it lacked speed and shooting ability. There wasn't a very good turnout for the squad. They played several good games, but met some of the best MC' teams our opponents had ever produced. They ended in last place. The new members of the D team were the tallest boys we ever had. Some 35 boys turned out.
