ln a stadium filled with l2,000 cheering football fans she was hardly recognizable. Sitting dangerously close to the sideline, her slight figure seemed insignificant when compared to the towering gridiron heroes. But when a quarterback went reeling backwards under a tide of assail- ants, when a guard fell senseless against a barrage of cleats, when an end whimpered from the pain of wrenched leg muscles, she was there - in the spotlight. During school she was just the nurse, until an emergency arose, or until sickness intervened with a student's routine. Then it was her hour. School was over - her working day finished. The telephone rang. How about my shoulder? Can l play in the game tomorrow? Which doctor should l see? Should l go back to school this week? were the urgent queries. She answered them all. The cafeteria workers needed advice. The coach had some questions on his boy's health. And who would supervise the chest X-rays and immunization shots? She was there, to counsel, to direct. She smiled, as usual, when asked what her main duty was. My job is looking out after the students as individuals. Their problems are my problems - each of them. And her job was one well done. After 25 years of treating ills and supervising Ysleta High's health program, she was still energetic, smiling, still within calling distance when the cries for a nurse arose. But fully as important as her professional ability, she was.part of the Tribe. Since her debut in l929, she had seen thousands oblndians come and go - including her three sons - and few wilfsforget her. It is therefore our privilege to dedicate this book to MRS. ELIZABETH GROB, our school nurse -the woman who was always there.
