Naturally in an undertaking of this character I needed a doctor, a secretary, and a business manager. I selected Dr. Thelma McNail, physician, George Graf, business manager, and Yone Daito, secretary. Our first stop was at the thriving town of Ysleta, principal suburb of El Paso. To our astonishment and surprise we found Fred Nelson and Mary Causey hap- pily married, and Fred was one of Ysleta's leading citizens and a prominent attorney. As we left Ysleta, we saw a long fleet of transcontinental trucks on the highway below us. Who do you think owned them? It was no one but little Dick Andress. He was carrying a load of provisions to Max Teat's commissary on a large farm near Fabens, Texas. Our next stop was at the Texas Hotel in Ft. Worth. We were surprised to find Garret Tyra manager, and Mary Jensen the Hotel's public stenographer. We were royally entertained at the winter home of Mr. and Mrs. Shannon, Brady and the former Clarice Sherwood, at Palm Beach, Fla. Also while there we took a short cruise on the Navy Ship, Texas, the cap- tain in charge being Alfred Valentine, and on the boat we listened to the Naval Band directed by Frank Amis. Upon returning to Palm Beach, we visited several points of interest, including the largest government airport, and found June Penn as one of the instructors. We also saw Mary Olvin Phillips modeling in one of the exclusive dress shops. On our way to New York we were pleasantly sur- prised to find Kenneth Ruiz and Buddy Snelson as in- structors at West Point. Our next stop was in Wash- ington, D. C., where we had a very pleasant visit with Senator Woody Downum and Congresswoman Wylis Graham. While we were there Bob Kerley was ap- pointed third assistant Attorney-General. Our next stop was New York City, where we found Mary Lee Walbridge operating a women's exclusive ready-to-wear shoppe. We heard Oliver Williams and his orchestra play at the Waldorf-Astoria. We also found Carl Dawson head of a brokerage house. Upon visiting the U. S. Consulate, we met Francisco Holguin and Louis Telles, who were in the government service, with Josephine Gomez and Marie Bowling acting as their secretaries. On our visit to Princeton we saw Louis Cuthbertson as head coach, Elvin Kerley as as- sistant coach, and Johnny Pitts as athletic director. Just outside of Princeton at a girl's camp we found Winifred Brock and Beatrice Klabock in charge. Alton McCleskey had one of the largest churches in Princeton. Our next stop was Chicago, where we met Channing Champie writing poetry, Virginia Cramer teaching dancing with Velma Chamberlain as her assistant, Jean Moore broadcasting news over NBC, Mary Kirby- Smith a chief dietitian, and Florence Recker a teacher in the Chicago High School system. We must not for- get to mention Billy Fletcher, Jack James, and James Carr, well-known business men of Chicago, with Faye Fortenberry, Josephine Jarvis, and Elizabeth Crank as their secretaries. Charles Mills was operating Al Ca- pone's famous night club in Chicago. Going over to Pendleton, Ore., we encountered Jessie Daugherty, Kassie Keithley, Virginia Black, Ferrel Clifford, and Oleta Mae Towles running a large dude ranch. At Hollywood many courtesies were shown us by the following cinema stars: Jane Duncan, Neomia Russel, Winona Couch, Marie Dodson, James Perry, and Terrel Karstendickg and, believe it or not, James Brock was doubling for Tyrone Power. After leaving Hollywood, just as we landed in E1 Paso, I fell out of bed and awoke. CLASS HISTORY Fre In September of 1934 there enrolled in Ysleta High School a comparatively small group of students who were destined to bring fame and honor to themselves, their class, and, above all, to their Alma Mater. Since then their number has been swelled by frequent and worthy additions. During these past four years the students of the class of '38 have each and everyone come to love the dear old walls and grounds that surround their school. So it is with a heavy heart and a none too dry eye that the spring graduation is thought of, because this marks the end of a long and glorious history. Truly they are at the end of the trail. The history of the class of '38 has been one of vic- tory in every attempted battle. Among its members have been scholars, athletes, orators, organizers, writers, d Nel son and possibly a future president. Within the last four years the class of '38 has dominated every program, contest, class, or drive of which it was a part. Few times, indeed, has it or its members met with defeat. And even what few defeats they have suffered have been met with a sporting and gallant heart. And even though the class of '38 had its remarkable individuals, they were not lacking in class allegiance. In fact, few, if any, classes or organizations could ever compete with them when it came to unity of purpose and group determination. How well they remembered, Together we stand, divided we fall. So let it be said now and in the future of the class of '38, one of the finest in Ysleta's past, present, and future history, that they were all for one, and one for all. Late in Au- gust these plans materialized and with the same grim determination this group pitched camp in the mountains of Cloudcroft and set to work to build a real ball club. On the night of September 18, almost a month after they had begun practice, the now hardened K'mountaineers opened the Ysleta season with Hot Springs, New Mexico. From the outset this was the Indians' game. With the whole team working like a well oiled machine, the offense clicked with crushing power and the defense stopped every Hot Springs drive in its very tracks. The next two games with Alpine and Marfa were duplicates of the first. Both were featured by brilliant runs and an impenetrable defense on the part of the Indians. Up to this time the misfortune of injuries had not beset Ysleta, but on the afternoon of October 8 the Indians played their arch rivals, the Fabens Wildcatsg and, despite the fact that they played Fabens off its feet, the Indians barely escaped with a 12 to 6 win and several injuries to show for the courageous play. The following week the still undefeated Ysle- tans played the always tough Austin Panthers. Although they played a valiant game, the Pan- thers, greater experience finally told after three and a half periods of outstanding play on both sides, and the Indians had to chalk up their first loss of the year. This set-back failed, however, to dampen the Ysleta spirit, for the following week they tackled Cathedral High with an eye on the game the following week with El Paso High and came off easy victors by a 26 to O count. VVords cannot describe the wonderful spirit and fight that the Indians displayed in playing the heavy experienced Tiger powerhouse to a stand- still, only to get the tough break of having a punt blocked on their goal line and ultimately losing 13 to O. But never before in Ysleta's football history had any team ever played such an inspired do or die type of game, and though they lost in score the Ysletans will always keep with them the thought that they won a moral victory with which few can compare. Although the Ysleta season had already reached its climax, the Indians still had two games to play. On November ll they journeyed to Tula- rosa and stopped the latter club by the lopsided score of 33 to O. Then in their last game of a very successful season they tangled with the Bowie Bears and lost a heartbreaker 7 to 6. Despite the fact that this was their third defeat, the Indians' season showed that they had run up a total of 226 points to their opponents' 53 and had been shut out only once. B owie Nov. 18 ..,.,,.,,,,,,,,,,.,.,, El Paso Starting the season with a new coach and only three men from last season, the Papooses got off to a bad start by losing to the Bowie Cubs in the first game of the season. The Cubs were too much for the home team. Their fake reverses kept the Papooses baffled all afternoon. The following Thursday, the El Paso Tiger Cubs visited Ysleta, and were sent home on the short end of the score 13-O. The little Indians played the visitors off their feet as the four first downs the El Paso club made will indicate. The next week the Pa- pooses invaded the Austin field and came home winner 13-7. The Austin team gave the home boys some shaky moments, but they lacked the staying power of the Ysleta boys. Two weeks later the Ysletans were sent home from Anthony beaten 27-O. It was the worst de- feat of the season. The superior weight of the opposing team wore the Ysleta boys down, al- 0 .,..,, 13 ..,,.......,,,,,,...,,,. . .,...,,..,,,, Papooses ,, ,,,,,,,,,, Papooses 27, .,,.,, ,,,,,...., P apooses 6 13 ,, ,,.,,,,,,, Papooses 13 O 6 7 7 ,,,.,.,.,, W . ,...,..,,,,,,,... The Ysleta boys roundly outplayed their rivals throughout the game, but finally lost because of an intercepted pass in the last few seconds to play. The second defeat at the hands of the Bowie team was the hardest of the season because the local boys led 6-O until the final moments. The final game of the season was played on the El Paso field two weeks later. The Indian jinx on the Tiger Cubs held good as the boys from home struck early in the game, and never relinquished their 7-O lead. As the seasons' standings were tabulated, it was found that the Papooses had won the District 4 Cup for B Teams. The boys on the team are to be commended for their fight and courage. There were no individual stars on the team, all worked together to make a well-balanced ball club. YONE DAITO Best Girl Aihlete THE GAME of LIFE Bill Jones had been the shining star upon his college team, His tackling was ferocious and his bucking was a dream. When husky William tucked the ball beneath his brawny arm, They had a special man to ring the ambulance alarm. Bill hit the line and ran the ends like some mad bull amuckg The other side would shiver when they saw him start to buckg And when a rival tackler tried to block his dashing pace, His first thought was a train of cars had waltzed across his face. Bill had the speed-Bill had the weight-the nerve to never yieldg From goal to goal he whizzed along while fragments strewed the field- And there had been a standing bet, which no one tried to call, That he would gain his distance through a ten foot granite wall. When he wound up his college course, each student's heart was sore, They wept to think that husky Bill would hit the line no moreg Not so with William-in his dreams he saw the field of fame, Where he would buck to glory in the swirl of Life's big game. He tried to run the ends of life, when lo! with vicious toss A bill collector tackled him and threw him for a lossg And when he switched his course again and crashed into the line, The massive guard named Failure did a Two-step on his spine. Bill tried to punt out of the rut, but ere he turned the trick Right tackle Competition tumbled through and blocked the kickg And when he tackled at Success in one long, vicious bound, The fullback Disappointment steered his features in the ground. But one day, when across the field of Fame, the goal seemed dim, The wise old coach, Experience, came up and spoke to him, Old Boy, he said, The main point now before you win your bout Is keep on bucking Failure till you've worn the lobster out. Cut out his work around the ends-go in there low and hard- Just put your eyes upon the goal and start there yard by yardg And more than all when you are thrown or tumbled with a crack, Don't lie there whiningg hustle up and keep on coming back. Keep coming back for all you've got, and take it with a grin When Disappointment trips you up or Failure barks your shin. Keep on coming back and if at last you lose the game of Right, Let those that whipped you know at least, they too, have had a fight. Keep coming backg and though the world may romp across your spine Let every game's end find you still upon the battling line. For when the one Great Scorer comes to write against your name, He marks-not that you won or lost-but how you played the Game. Such is alumnus Football on the whitechalked field of lifeg You find the bread line hard to buck, while sorrow crowns the strifeg But in the fight for name and fame among the world-wide clan, There goes the victor sinks to naught before There goes a Man. -Grantland Rice.
