Various complaints arose regarding the student atten- dance policy, closed lunch, and the $10 parking fee. After a student walk-out and a week of discontent, the situation was allev- iated by the calling of a Public Board of Education meeting. A new policy was drawn up by a joint committee, and the problems seemed to fade in our memories. At Left: Mary Rokusek. Below: Cathy Heck, Jana Helkaa, Sue Spike, Lori McNamara, Julie Valario. It was necessary for the crew to become familiar with a whole new collection of lights, plugs, microphones, tools, consoles, curtains and props. Once these _ technicalities were mastered, the cast was plagued with an incredible number of accidents. However, true to the code “The show must go on”, the play opened with a broken leg, a sprained ankle, a broken elbow, an understudy and numerous severely bruised performers. Despite these obstacles, the cast and crew were successful in providing the audience with 62 an enjoyable evenings’ entertainment. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF . The Class of “‘75 followed tradition by giving the most support, time and enthusiasm to school activities. Following a general feeling of nostalgia that 1973 was noted for, the Juniors suggested ‘“‘The Days of The Fifties” as a theme for the Homecoming Dance. The members of the class dressed in old ‘50's clothes and ‘50's songs were played during one of the most successful dances YHS has seen in years. os a B 2 ag oO 3 -) A ¥ q a a = @ = i a be 3 Qa a | a B 2 s oO Janet Croghan, The Shadow, and The Elusive Eraser. Photo: Osborn Photo: Parks Photo x : ro xt The Cross Country team is one of the least known and least patron- es ; : ized teams at YHS. Harriers take great pride in their sport, for it takes a great deal of endurance to race over the three mile course. The 1973-74 Cross Country team had some fine individuals, but there was lack of depth, and the Braves ended with a 3-10 season. Coach Simpson's team was lead by four seniors: Harold Carter, Joel Osborn, Bernard Brown and Charlie Green. Harold Carter was the number one man throughout the season, con- tinuously finishing high in dual and triangular meets, and winning a large majority of them. He was also 7th at Albion Invitational, 3rd in the tough 7-A league, 8th at Regionals, and capped a fine season by placing 10th in the State meet. Joel Osborn, a three year veteran on the team and a three time letter winner, consistently placed high in the meets to help the Braves in the scoring department. He took many second places, often teaming up with Carter for a 1-2 Brave finish. A broken ankle late in the summer sidelined Bernard Brown for a large portion of the season. This was a major blow to the Braves’ chances in the meets. After his ankle healed, he quickly worked his way up to the number three position. Charlie Green was a three year veteran on the team. He finished high in the team scoring all year and finished the season in the number 4 spot. Mark Sanders was the only Junior on the team. Sophomores includ- ed Ernie Turman, Gary Weiser, Joe Fournier, John Smallish, Mike Zureich, Steve Cadwallader and Kevin Kemp. Demetrius Booker was Opponent the only Freshman on the team. Although the top four men are graduating, many lettermen will be Belleville 25 returning for the '74 season. They were without a doubt the most successful of the athletic year at teams for the 1973-74 school YHS. The team compiled a 15-1 record, shut- ting out 11 of their 17 opponents. They were second in league and regional meets. The only loss of the year came at the hands of Ann Arbor Pioneer, the winner of the league and regional meets. The number 1 and 2 singles positions were held by sophomores Steve Carter and John Freatman. Senior Captain Ellis Freatman was in the number 3 singles spot and senior Al Andrews was 4 singles. Number 1 doubles were Senior Tim Burandt and Sophomore George Wallace. In the number 2 doubles spot were Senior Brian McAllister and Junior Naz Sesi. Senior Dave Nesbitt and Junior Bob Fischer were in the number 3 doubles spot. Ellis Freatman, and Burandt were all winners. The varsity finished with 5 victories and 4 losses, for their 5th winning season in a row. The Braves once again had a player selected for All-State honors, Mike Grice. The team earned 2nd place at the Dearborn Invitational, said to be one of the most prestigious tournaments in Fall Golf. The Linksmen were 3rd at the Regionals behind A.A. Pioneer and Trenton, and 4th at the League Meet. Coach Wilbanks had high praise for his Senior Captain Doug Davis. He lead in scoring and accomplished a great feat by setting five Varsity records. At the State meet, Suckstorff placed 13th in the 100 yard Freestyle. Junior, Ken Murphy and Sophomore, Clark Brown also were high team point winners. This Sophomore class has a lot to contribute to the Student Body of Ypsilanti High School. They struggle forth behind the Juniors and Seniors to find their place in front of the incoming Fresh- men. A new school, new faces, new beginnings and a chance to make themselves known. After the first con- fusing weeks the sophomores did a fantastic job swinging into class elections and class assemblies. The class of ‘'76” started off well showing school spirit with pep assem- blies and participation. This participation in the various events helped to build a strong sense of school spirit this year. High school is a new experience for sopho- mores. There are many ad- justments as changes are made from junior high attitud- es to high school leadership. This year’s sophs found them- selves faced with greater freedom than they had in jun- ior high, a wider selection of classes, and a brand new building. For sophs, this year was a time to learn the ropes of YHS and to move on to their goal, graduation, be- cause 1976 is only two years away. For the 1st year in a long time, YHS welcomed the Freshman class as part of the school. 9th graders quickly made a reputation for themselves for being the noisiest, and most rambunctious class in the building. No one walking past E or F sections of the Great Room needs to ask what classes are taught there - the area is obviously full of Freshmen. The 9th graders must be given credit though for fitting into YHS routines with a minimum of problems. They quickly adapted to crowded hall passages, long lunch lines, and TALL people. tel 2 Vion Jon Lawnizak, Sharon Kitts, Shaun Stripp. —— — rs co a oO z oa S g co a a Pat Birdsall Lawrena Birton Charicie Bishop Gwenda Black Tom Blackburn Robert Blair Roger Blasey John Bloss Douglas Bledsoe David Bogarin Gayle Bonds Cynthia Booker Marl ene Boone Jodi Bower Chris Bradley Kathy Brazil Janet Briggs Judith Broniak Mike Brooks Allan Brown Brenda Brown Gary Brown Gwen Browning Ted Browning Tony Browning Lori Bryant Glenda Buck Catherine Burgard Deborah Burgens Cathy Burns Ina Burton Sally Buschell William Bush Jerry Butler Debra Caddell Robert Caliano James Cameron Jr. Robert Cantrell Mary Canter Mitch Caouette Kathy Chadwick Sandra Chambers Sanetta Chandler Sheree Chavez Matt Chiodini Melvin Chisolm Paul J. Since few teachers work in anything that resembles a traditional class- room, it was necessary to find ways to get teaching materials to teaching stations. Each day just before 8:00 a line of carts came wheeling out of the office area and scattered to different areas of the Great Room. Teachers were provided offices located nearby their class areas. However, since the offices were placed through our building, it became difficult to know people in other departments. In an effort to alleviate this problem, the administration threw several parties to promote staff spirit. Working in open-space classrooms was a completely new experience for YHS teachers. Flexibility became an important word in their vocabulary. The variety of movable furniture made it possible to arrange tables, desks, panels, and cabinets at will to accomodate whatever class activities that might be planned. Because as a young businessman and sup- posedly a success materially, ‘‘as most people measure success, ’ when I first heard the Gospel of how Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins, I realized that something was missing in my life. There was an emptiness and loneliness that was never satisfied until September 13, 1959 when I got on my knees and asked Christ to forgive me of my sins and save me. Over the last years with Ypsi High he has seen the school and student body change in various ways. He has noticed that the students have seemed to become more aware and involved with issues in and about the school. ‘“‘They have been willing to put forth the effort to change things and have, most importantly, learned that reform comes about through cooperation.’’ By this and other favorable thoughts ‘my faith in younger people was reinforced.” Experience has proven helpful in Mr. Schmidt's teaching techniques. He has found that in the Social Studies Department working with small groups and individuals giving oral and written reports benefit the students greatly. Participation in group discussions is also very helpful. The new high school offers many opportunitites to study in modern ways. If television programming and the Student Room could be put to use--even with history--everyone could take advantage of this form of learning. We dedicate this page to Mr. Schmidt and say thank you for the success of the Social Studies Department. During his retirement, Mr. Schmidt will not remain idle. It is fortunate that he likes to work with young people and will be back substitute teaching or doing volunteer work with the school. Teachers who care about their students and get involved with their work surely help the community and Mr. Schmidt will be missed. = o2 a O Z 2 A, Y Counter Clockwise, beginning below: Jay Lawniczak, Paul Fraser, Bill Seimers; Paul Fraser, Barry LaRue, Esq., Jay Lawniczak; Bill Seimers, Paul Fraser, Nancy Hall, Barry LaRue, Esq., Jay Lawniczak; Barry LaRue, Esq., Jay Lawn- iczak, Bill Seimers, Paul Fraser; Nancy Hall, Haroldee, Jay Lawniczak, Bill Seimers. The '74 Track Team ended with a 3-9 record. Many injuries all season and a lack of depth caused defeat in many of the meets. The majority of the team was composed of under- classmen. Seniors included Mike Grice (shot put), Bruce Smith (440-mile relay), Bernard Brown (2 mile), Jo el Osborn (2 mile), and Harold Carter (mile- mile relay). The '75 team will have many returning men as well as many fine prospects from the Freshman team. The move to our new school building resulted in mass hysteria. We all had to put up with no chairs, walls falling over, lost boxes of text books, and Freshmen who refused to walk through the halls like everyone else. But we did pull through the year. It’s been tough adjusting, but I feel it was worth the trouble. The Class of 1974 was lucky in a way. Ypsi's past graduates never got to experience the open class system, and our Underclassmen still have to put up with it. But, future Seniors take heart! By next fall, the past year’s problems will be forgot- ten, leaving all new dilemmas for you to face. I’m sure you can handle it. After all, as long as you can be half as good as the Class of 1974, you'll be great. As is mentioned several times throughout the book, this was a “year of firsts”. Another impor- tant 1st time occurrence that may not be known to the Ypsi High community is my election to the position of editor of the yearbook. This is the first time in the history of Y.H.S. that a black person has held this post. As editor of the 1974 Ypsilantian, I was charged with the responsibility of seeing that all events of the year be recorded. The staff and I have spent many hours in producing this yearbook. We hope you will enjoy it for many years to come. Ralph Carpenter Editor-In-Chief Contributing Photographers: Sal Ahmed Firooz Amjadi Cecilia Balint Debbie Bans Gene Baughman Bill Bradley .
