“AGE IS ONLY A NUMBER, A CIPHER FOR THE RECORDS. A MAN CAN'T RETIRE HIS EXPERIENCE. HE MUST on oi... Oscar Wilde The familiar sight of Mr. Thomas Lawrence standing outside room 311, with or without his Hawaiian shirt, waiting for first hour to start, is now only memory. June 15, 1972, marked the completion of a 43 year teaching career for Mr. Lawrence. He has taught math-related subjects at Ypsi High since 1945. He feels that math is a very important subject, since everything in life is connected with numbers. Actually, Mr. Lawrence has lived in Ypsilanti most of his life. He attend- ed high school here when the building was an L shape, only half of its present size. He returned to Ypsilanti in 1932 after teaching at three other high schools in Michigan, including one in the Up- per Peninsula. Mr. Lawrence feels that he and Mrs. Lawrence will probably spend most of his retirement years traveling in warmer climates. “I have no definite plans for after retirement” he said during the in- terview, ‘but if I can help it, I will never live in Michigan again.” Mr. Lawrence feels that teaching has changed a great deal since he began his career. The person- al relationship, the rapport between student and teacher has dwindled out of existence, in his esti- mation. The attitude of the students have changed, he expanded, reflecting the general unrest of the time. “Teaching is more of a job than it used to be,’’ he adds. He humorously recalls one example, the regulation concerning the showing of affection in the halls. In a teacher’s handbook written only a few years ago, he relates, teachers were expected to discourage students from holding hands and the like in the halls. Now that and more are common sights. Mr. Lawrence then commented on his philosophy of teaching. ‘‘I will never answer a student's questions,” he stated, ‘but I will spend as much time as needed to help him find the answer.” This, he feels, is the most important part of being a student, to learn how to think. ‘This, more than any other facts you learn, will help you to succeed in life.”
