The topic for the debate team this year was Resolved: that the Federal government should provide essential medical care for U.S. citizens at public expense. Our de- baters put in a lot of work on this subject, led by the varsity teams of Chuck Stribley and Dan Brown; Jim Walton and Phil Crane. The debate squad ended this year with a record of 23 wins. Most of the squad also participated in discussion and in meets at Ann Arbor where YHS received 7 superior ratings and 14 excellent ones. YHS can be proud of the work done by the debate squad. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club was newly formed this year by students of Ypsi High who have an interest in the challenge that this game offers. The club has been one of themost active inthe school. They have held many meetings in which they competed with each other. They also have competed with other schools and have a good record. Members of the club have attended meetings at Eastern Michigan University and competed in toumaments. VARSITY BASKETBALL Ypsi High's varsity basketball team slipped from first to fifth place this year, but still they displayed some great basketball. If Coach Nicholas' team would have had a little luck toward the middle of the season, they would have battled Lincoln Park down tothe wire for the championship. Ypsi High's leading scorer and rebounder, Captain Larry Brose, nearly lead his team to a surprising upset over last year's second in state entry, Adrain, in the district contest. The Braves lost this thriller 65-62 in overtime. Larry also made the all-league first team this season. After dropping its opening three games, the team caught on fire, and came on to win, nine of their remaining thirteen games. During the year two boys were brought up to the varsity, and were immediately put into the starting line-up. Three more boys were mo ved up for the state tournaments. Coach Siebert deserves a lot of credit for the long hours which he put in during the season. Bentrum ties the game... VARSITY TRACK The track team had what they call in big leagues a highly successful season. Winning all league meets and losing one non-league meet to Ann Arbor by one point. This year's Ypsilanti High School cheerleading squad has been one of the best ever. The girls must take part in three out of five sports. These are: volleyball, basketball, swimming, badminton, and base- ball. After they have completed the three required numberof sports they choose, they are initi- ated into the club. Seniors always try to take the show. Florence Williams is giving senior Patt Horne a hard time. The basketball teams work so hard at practice, they hardly have time to talk. Sylvia Vick and Patt Horne show how a game can be won. OY KOOESN itr} ACAPPELLA CHOIR This year the A'Cappella Choirwas under the direction of Earl Pearson. With his leadership, the choir performed with its' usual outstanding ability. Among theactivities of the choirmembers was the annual Christmas Assembly put on jointly with the YHS Band. Atthis timethey alsocaroled the students of YHS. To help pay for their purple and gold robes, the members of the choir helda bake salewith which they were quite successful. To add excitement to their calendar, they spon- sored a Hootnanny, It turned out to be a smash- ing successand we all hopethat they will put on another Hootnanny next year for us. A Spring Concert which was given was most impressive. To end the yearthe choir sang at Baccalaureate Service. The whole year was a rewarding experience for the members of the YHS A'Cappella Choir. Rain or shine they hustled down tothe Dust Bow! to rehearse enthu- siastically tomake the many exciting events of this season possible. Among the events were the usual remarkable halftime and pre-game shows, including the spectacular Detroit Lions' halftime show. Last, but obviously not least, the marching band ended the season with the thrilling Hudson's Christmas parade. The band put much work into their reward- ing performances. The Christmas Assembly, done with the Vocal Department, started off the concert season. On top of the traditional Band-O-Rama, a winter concert was added tothe band's calendar. On March 8, the YHS band participated in the District Band Festi- val in Livonia. This was their first time competing in the AA class and they did extremely well. They added a colorful touch to the halftime and pre-game shows at our football games. They represented our school for the second time at the Detroit Lion's game; and they participated in the Ann Arbor Christmas parade, and our area parades. Their most exciting trip was to Holland, Michigan, for the Annual Tulip Festival. The juniors held the sixth annual Senior Banquet.
