To Ypsi High and our loyal class, We sing of love and truth, To Ypsi High and Fifty-six, And our golden days of youth, Soon we'll wear that cap and gown, And leave those years in the past. The memories of all good times Within our hearts will last. In time to come, it's true On our separate ways we'll go. Sadly down the river of life Far from the friends we know, Roberta Flint But let's not forget our happy class And all the fun we've had, Our Senior play, a big success, And the day we received our fad. The Senior Farewell and the picnic, too Memories I know you haven't forgot. The way we cheered our wrestling team, And helped them to the top. I could go on the whole night through And tell of the many happy days. Plus the hard work in studies, too, That will help us in many ways, To our adviser, Mr. Ritchie, And our loyal faculty, too, Fifty-six thanks, and appreciates The knowledge we gained from you. With saddened hearts and dewy eyes We now bid a sweet farewell. The world before us brightly lies; Yet at Ypsi High, our memories dwell, Class History The history of the class of 1956 begins in the fall of 1952. Our Freshman year is a year when a group of childish youngsters work and play together to mold the friendships and associ- ations that are the class of 1956. It is our first year and we prove to be a valuable addition to Ypsilanti High School by taking part in the many school activities. Many of us join clubs and others participate in radio and dramatics, Sixteen girls are chosen to be in the Girls Drum Bugle Corps. Some of the boys try their hand at sports and wih athletic awards, Our Sophomore year comes and we return to school more confident and mature. We are welcomed into the social life of the school by the Sophomore reception, We continue where we left off in activities and once again we make a fine showing. Throughout the year we participate in many events. Our boys again prove their prowess in athletics and many earn awards, Ann Mitchell had the lead in the all-school play, Stag Line., She and Jerry Keene were initiated into the National Thespian Society. Ann also attended the national Thespian convention at Indiana University that year. David Wilson placed first and Marjorie Jokubaitis placed second in the Declamations contest. Duane Bastian and Gene Doering are elected to lead the Student Council the following year. Time waits for no one and the class progresses. We find our time more valuable, being Juniors, so we make the most of it. Mr. Halbert is our class adviser and Richard Rhinehart is elected to lead our class. This year Nancy Fry, Charles Marshall, Ann Mitchell, Connie Mitchell, Judy Mudge, Judy Obermeyer, Sharleen Seamans, David Wilson, and Dolores Zahn are chosen for the National Honor Society. In speech activities Marjorie Jokubaitis won the I Speak for Democracy contest; Judy Obermeyer placed second in the same contest; Sharleen Seamans won the Extemporaneous Speaking contest. In the literary field David Wilson won the humorous essay contest and Eileen Schmaus placed second in the serious essay contest. Mary Ann Hudgens placed second in the essay contest. Prudence Brainard, Dave Curtis, and Marlene Edwards represent Peru in the UN Mock Assembly at Hillsdale College. Jerry Keene and Charles Marshall represent Ypsilanti High School at Boys' State and Wilma Johnson represents us at Girls' State. Walter Pitts and Warren Dawson take first, Duane Bastian, second, and Bobby Stout, fourth, in their respective weights to help the wrestling team place second in the State, The class is well represented in dramatics again. Judy Mudge and Bill Kelsch had Charles Marshall leading roles in the all-school play, The Little Dog Laughed, and Kathryn Wardrop and Marian Kerbyson also had roles in the play. These four plus Phyllis Ridenour, Harry Short, Lou Ann Graubner, and Sam Johnson were initiated into the Thespians. The outstanding social évent of the year was the annual J-Hop. In the fall of 1955 we find ourselves embarking on our last and most eventful year. With Mr. Paul Ritchie at the helm and Richard Rhinehart, Bobby Stout, Donna Dunlap, and Barbara Fedor as his willing crew, we settle to our task of making the Class of 1956 one long to be re- membered in the history of Ypsilanti High School. Warren Dawson and DuAnne Dixon were elected vice-president and secretary of the Student Council. DuAnne Dixon is selected as the D.A.R, good citizen and is the Drum Majorette of the Girls Drum Bugle Corps. Marjorie Jokubaitis is editor of the Sem and Kathryn Wardrop heads the Yearbook Staff. Many of our class members become members of the Quill Scroll Society due to their fine work on the paper and yearbook, Fifteen new members were elected to the National Honor Society, Dave Wilson, Duane Bastian, Charles Marshall, Walter, Pitts, Warren Dawson, Johnnie McCain, Howard Grayson, and Ralph Harper are captains of their various athletic teams. In wrestling Walter Pitts repeats as state champ at 165; Warren Dawson, heavyweight, places second; Bobby Stout, Duane Bastian, and Charles Marshall take third at 138, 145, and 175 respectively; and Buford Harmon places fourth at 120 as the wrestling team captures a coveted State Cham- pionship. The school starts membership in the newly formed Huron-Rouge Valley Conference with the start of the basketball season. Under the splendid direction of Miss Madge Iseminger, the Senior play, Girl Crazy, is a great success, Outstanding performances are registered by Dave Wilson, Sam Johnson, Judy Mudge, Marjorie Jokubaitis, Richard Rhinehart, and Gene Doering. Lynda McMinn and Barbara Fedor contributed greatly to the success of the all-school play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Jerry Keene and Judy Mudge win the Best Thespian awards. Thirty-four seniors are initiated into the National Thespian Society. Lynda McMinn won the Interpretative Reading contest and placed second in the District; Judy Mudge placed second in the District Humorous Declamation; and Sharleen Seamans and Richard Jacobson tied for first in the Extemporaneous Speaking contest. Marlene Edwards and Richard Jacobson represent Thailand at the Mock UN Assembly at Hillsdale. Theresa McCrumb won the gold medal in G.A.C., the highest award given, We, the Class of 1956, are about to step out into life and write another page in our bright history. We hope that the fine record we have amassed will serve as a mark for other classes. We hope, too, that the part we have played will be a cherished and remembered par t of the traditions and records of Ypsilanti High School. Prophecy Marjorie Jokubaitis Sam Johnson The time is 2:00 p.m.; the place is the Huron Hotel Planet Room; the date is June 8, 1976. I had just stopped in for my afternoon coffee break where I met Marjorie Jokubaitis, who is now mar- ried and the mother of octuplets. As people often do, we started reminiscing about the good old days, our days at Ypsi High School, Yep, things sure have changed! Instead of the headlines reading transcontinental airliner, they are now screaming regular rocket trips to Mars! Yep, times sure have changed, : It seems like only yesterday that we were happy, carefree seniors--by the way, what's MARY GRAY doing today? She had better be home doing the wash! But you know, this town sure has changed--no pool halls, no bars, and all because of our hard working mayor, BILL KELSCH, : PAT BROWER is postmaster now. Seems like those speeches he made in public speaking got him somewhere after all, : And JOHN HEMPHILL is truant officer now--Yep, things sure have changed! : And PETE ROOPAS is admiral of the space fleet, : And NANCY FRY is dog catcher! It looks like CHARLES MARSHALL'S new business is doing okay, : Yes, Marshall's Beauty Salon is really a big hit--especially with their new hair stylist, WALTER PITTS, and their manicurist, MERLE PRATT, Curly Crampton's Barber Shop is doing okay, too, I always knew FRANK CRAMPTON would get ahead in this world, : Especially with his new barbers, FRIEDA GRAMS, BARBARA HUDSON, and SIDNEY LAMBERT, It looks like TOM DUMBACK and JERRY BOYD really started something worth while, Daredevil Driving School, : Well, I hadn't even heard of it! Does anyone work there that I know? Why sure, LOU ANN GRAUBNER is the head instructor, PETE GRAHAM teaches a special course on How to talk your way out of a $27 ticket. ' Of course, DANNY WRIGHT is their big wheel after winning the Indianapolis Speedway in his '52 Ford, TED HANLON is located in the antique department, It seems his dad still won't let him trade his '48 Ford, : Did you see MATTIE JACKSON JOHNSON, WILMA JOHNSON, and PAT JONES wrestling on TV last night? Imagine them giving free exhibitions for such a worthy cause as the four-headed orphans fund, Some of the kids have really made something worth while of themselves. CARROL LAMBERT, DORIS QUARTERMAN, and RUTH ENGEL are missionaries and are now on their way to Zam- bezi, : Talking about missionaries, BUFORD HARMON and BOBBY STOUT are great preacher now, They just published their religious work entitled Our Mistakes. It comes in 36 leather bound volumes. A few of the kids have moved out of state. BEVERLY DOWNS married some big Texas oilman named Ups. JOHNNIE McCAIN is captain of the Globetrotters. PAT SEATON is raising horses is Arizona, DAVID TOWLER and MARTIN PHILLIPP just returned from the Moon, And TERRY WHITFIELD is a traveling salesman, but I hear he's decided to settle down on a farm, : Of course some of the grads have really surprised us with their hidden talents, Take the floor show here, for instance. FRED SCHWALL and PRUDY BRAINARD and their wild Kangaroo Act and WARREN Libby DAWSON at the piano accompanied by EILEEN SCHMAUS on her Ter- rible Tuba. Say, isn't that DAVID WILSON over there? Yes, he's bus boy here. Right now he is having a terrible time writing a thesis for his profes- sor, JERRY KEENE, who is mighty rough on Dave. Yes, Dave is still going to school, : Quite a few of the kids have gone into the teaching profession. THERESA McCRUMB and MARY LEE KING are Phy, Ed, teachers. EVELYN FELLER is teaching Latin. They must have been inspired by the fine examples of our teachers, Have you stopped by GENE DOERING'S dance studio lately? He's featuring a new dance called the Chubby-Chubby! LANNY DAVIS, FRANCIS KIMBALL, and DUANE MILLER are his in- structors, Say, that looks like LYNDA McMINN across the street--- What in the world is she doing? Oh, she's just jumping over that fire hydrant--I see she's still pulling some of her high school tricks, There's HARRY SHORT following her with all their little Shorts. He sure looks different with most of his hair gone, Did you hear the new record his group put out? No, What group? Why, he, MARY SZEKERES, and BOBBIE FLINT are the Crimson Top Trio. Their brand new release, written by CONNIE MITCHELL and JAMES WAITE, is entitled, Red Flannel Slippers. Hand me that newspaper, will you? Oh, it's the Weekly Wonder. So many of our old classmates work on it, I just adore DOLORES ZAHN'S editorials. But one column I never miss is JESSE FOLEY'S Fashions for Women! SHIRLEY GIBSON has written a good article about JIM DAVIS breaking the 16-day sleep record, My girls never miss MARIAN KERBYSON'S Advice to Teenagers or JUDY OBERMEYER'S Lovelorn section, : My little angels think GORDON MOTION'S cartoons are the funniest things. Say, did you read JAMES WOOTEN'S poem, Oh Broken Heart of My Loved One Dear ? Yes, isn't it touching. Here's an announcement of the opening of the Careful Cuties Cab Com- pany owned and operated by MILDRED CURTIS, JOAN DOZIER BROWN, and ELIZABETH FOSTER. : Read this Ups and Downs column, GERALD GRAGG just set a new world's elevator record of 2, 793 trips from the first floor to the eighty-fourth floor in succession, It says in the theatrical section that BOB BORKE'S new operetta, Speedo, is opening Friday night. Why, good old RICHARD RHINEHART sings the lead song, Mimi. : It says JUDY MUDGE is the female lead, The critics say there is one song she sings with deep feeling, Danny Boy. ' ANN MITCHELL designs all Judy's costumes, Her latest creation is entitled almost nothing. I hear MIKE BROWN has given us his job at the Farm Bureau to take care of their children, I guess they decided one working in the family is enough. By the way, BOB HAMMONS is the director of the play. : Did you read this sport's article by DUANE BASTIAN about KATHRYN LOUNSBERRY running her one-minute mile? He also wrote this article about SUZANNE ROBINETT swimming the length of the Huron River four times under water. She was ably assisted by her coach, PHYLLIS ADAMS, The time- keeper was RUDY WRIGHT while DELORISE ARTHUR stood by as her life-guard. : Well, there's CARMELLA GRECO, What's she got her arm in a sling for? : She's had to wear a sling ever since her bank president husband gave her that new diamond ring, Did you read this medical article under JOE Flash'’ CARPENTER'S byline? It's about Doctor EDWARD STRAYHORN'S operation on JUANITA CALHOUN, It seems Juanita took MARLENE EDWARDS lecture on relaxation too much to heart, Trouble is she tried to relax on a golf course and three golfers mistook her mouth for the 16th hole. Interns that assisted with the operation were BETTY SPECHT and BETTY JO MAY. : It's funny how many of the girls turned out to be successful authors, I was in WANDA ALDRIDGE'S Bookworm Shop when I noticed a few of their books on display, Those that I saw were: DOROTHY KNOX'S best seller, I Cried Yesterday ; SUE IRWIN'S tear jerker, Girls, Never Give Up ; GWENDOLYN THOMAS', Lost in the Subway, a thrilling mystery. Also BARBARA FEDOR'S comical, My Life as a Butterfly, and DUANNE DIXON'S factual, Navy Wife. MELVA CHARLES has written a great love classic, Hands Across the Meat Counter, A lot of the kids have gone into business for themselves. Take RALPH and ROGER HARPER, for example, with their Mosquito Net Clothing for Eskimos. EDWIN ADAMS and PHILIP ROFF are their--You make it, We'll sell it--salesmen. JOHN STAFFORD and MAXINE BOND are their chief testers. At least they were until they caught triple pneumonia. Their models are ROSEMARY OTTO--bermudas, YVONNE KOPE--long underwear, BETTY SIMPSON--bathing suits, and YVONNE HEARNS--evening gowns. : Hey, look! HOWARD GRAYSON just walked in the door. He sure is man-about-town since he was elected president of the national organization of the El Dukes. Talk about being happy! I don't think anyone is as happy as the Barefoot Six Dance Band, : They're really creating a sensation, aren't they? : Yes, with LOIS SNYDER on the Juice Harp and GLENDA WARREN on the B-flat scrub-board, : DORIS HARRISON and her washtub solo is what tickles me. But MARY TAYLOR really goes to town on her little brown jug. ANNA JEAN MARTIN makes a swell vocalist, especially when she yodels Blue Moon. What really puts the show over is when SHIRLEY STETLER comes out and plays Jingle Bells on her musical bottles. : Ihear they recently made a hit at EMILY LITMAN and KATHRYN WARDROP'S Resort for Re- tired Criminals, : Isn't the Bobsy Nursery located near there? It's right around the corner, isn't it? : Yes, and ROBERT BARNES is Chief Pablum Pitcher, BOB BECKER is in the bottle washing department, and poor BOB SHAW, you know which part of the business he got. So far they can only accommodate MYRNA CLARK, CAROLYN CONRAD, and MARTHA FULLERTON'S children, But, after all, that is 47. Say, do you remember MARY ANN HUDGENS, GENE BRITT, and BILL FISHBECK? : Sure, I remember them, Well, they're millionaires now. They made their fortunes by raising Pizza Plants. It really looks like the farm business is paying off for TOM JOHNSON and DONNA DUNLAP. They are the only people I know who own a souped-up Cadillac convertible tractor, Speaking of making a fortune, I hear CHARLES DICUS is applying for bankruptcy papers for his Gold Plated Bird Bath Factory. It seems that their head salesman, GRADY GRAHAM, better known as the rich birds friend, just wasn't up to par last year. He only sold 8, 000. S: Talking about bankruptcy reminds me of THELMA TINDALL and GERALDINE RAINES' mink farm, It seems that all their minks went bald. M: But MARV CHAPMAN is really making himself a mint since he invented his new switchless car, It runs strictly on this principle--just twist a few wires together. He got his experience during his senior year. His old test drivers, SHARLEEN SEAMANS, KAT STREICHER, BETTY MIDDLETON are now in the hospital suffering from concussion, broken bones, fractures, and other minor injuries. Marv's head mechanics are none other than SHIRLEY BROWN and MARY FRAZIER, You know, it's surprising how many tourists are coming to town now since MARIANNE CUMMINGS and NEATREAL FRIERSON started those cruises up and down the scenic Huron River. DICK BORTZ and JACK GEARHART are head guides because of their great knowledge of the river. You heard, didn't you, that JOAN JAHNCKE, MARIE SAMWORTH, and BARBARA KRAMER were awarded the Nobel Prize? It seems they wrote a story entitled, 'What Senior Economics Class Can Do For You! And I heard CAROL HANLON, PHYLLIS RIDENOUR, and JOAN HEWITT wrote its sequel entitled, OH, YEAH? Imagine courageous WINONA REMSBERG and PAULINE STRUBLE crusading all over the world giving speeches on This Younger Generation is Going to the Dogs. And I think CAROLE VAN GIESON and SANDRA HARDEN have come up with the smartest little invention, Presto, the pocket-sized cigarette roller for poor chain smokers. : You know, it has been a long time, but some of the kids haven't changed a bit. Like, remember last year when RICHARD JACOBSON and BOB HOLDIN G scaled the side of the Grand Canyon just to write their names! Right! We, the Class of 1956, of Ypsilanti High School, have accumu- lated many earthly possessions during these four short and interesting years. Some are real and useful; others fancied and imaginary. To provide for these, our treasures, we must draw up a will, We, the members of the Senior Class of 1956, of Ypsilanti High School, located in the city of Ypsilanti, county of Washtenaw, and State of Michigan, being of sound mind and memory, do make, ordain, declare, and acknowledge this to be our last will and testament. To the Class of 1957 we leave the work, play, honor, and joys of being a Senior. We also leave you the dignity and responsibilities all Seniors must assume in order to create a well functioning class, Along with becoming a Senior comes the sole right of publishing the Senior Yearbook and producing the Senior Play; to no underclassmen are these rights and privileges granted, To the Class of 1958, we bequeath the duty of looking up to the Seniors as examples to follow, and also the right to present the annual J-Hop. We direct that all miscellaneous articles such as second-hand chewing gum, last year's Reader's Digest, lipstick, and so forth be placed on sale at public auction, The proceeds of which shall be left for the benefit of the Class of 1959. We recommend that the money be used to install a water pressure system which will pipe the water to the third floor fountains. We l eave to our successors our good will and most sincere wishes; to the faculty our respect and admiration. We advise that all grievances, disputes, petty jealousies, disloyalty, and unfairness be sold to the junk dealer and the proceeds used to beautify the grounds of Ypsi High, We hereby consign all honors won by us in the course of our attendance at Ypsilanti High to the pages of our Senior Annual, We leave them with a sense of pride and with a certain feeling of regret that we have not the opportunity for enlarging and bettering their account. To the citizens of Ypsilanti, who are in reality our parents, we leave our most sincere thanks and gratitude for the deep interest they have displayed in us and the willing counsel which they have extended, We can only begin to realize what they have done for us through their love and sacrifice, as we view our career in the light of understanding which Commence- ment brings. We know we shall always carry with us that from which we cannot part memories, To our homeroom teachers: Mr. Lee, Mr. Waterman, Mr. Helvey, Miss Crothers, and Mr. Sinden we leave our sincere gratitude for their understanding and patience; and especially to Miss Iseminger our humble thanks for her direction of our Senior Play which was a great success, Kathryn Wardrop To Mr. Paul Ritchie, our adviser, we leave our lasting love and gratitude for all the times he stood by us patiently, even when we blundered on alone, heedless of his words, We hope we leave with him not only the crises of our Senior year, but also some of the joys. To Mr. Ritchie we say, God Bless You, We do hereby appoint Mr. Norris G. Wiltse, Mr. Alvin Joslyn, and Mr, Evart Ardis as executors of this, our last Will and Testament, Senior Directory BOND, MAXINE ROBERT BORTZ, DICK Interclass Sports l, Sy BR AINARD, PRUDENC I fficer 1 ,O1 Pl iy ] BRITT, LESTER BROWER, PATRICK BROWN, Football 2 Officer 4 BROW N, JOAN DOZIER Attended Randolph Count A Cappella Choir 2: N.H BROWN, SHIRLEY CALHOUN, JUANITA Athenian Club 1; G.A,.C, 1; Homeroom Officer 2. 3. « ° isiness Education Club 3 CARPENTER, JOE CHAPMAN, MARVIN CHARLES, MELVA Interclass Sports 1, 2, 3; Business Education Club 3,4 CLARK, MYRNA GA C123 CONRAD, CAROLYN CRAMPTON, MICKEY Football 1, 2, 3, 4; Interclass Sports 3; Varsity Club 3, 4 CUMMINGS, MARIANNE All School Play 2, 3; Business Education Club 3, 4; A Cappella Choir 4 CURTIS, MILDRED Interclass Sports 1, 2, 3; Social Studies Club 4; Frencl CURTIS, DAVID Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Orchestra 1, 2; All School Play 3,4; Year Book Staff 4; Thespi United Nations Model Assembly 3 CURTIS, WILLIAM Band I, 2, 3, 4; DAVIS, JAMES DAVIS, LYNWOOD DAWSON, WARREN Football 1, 2, 3,4; Wrestling 2, 3, 4; Student Co neil Officer 4; Wrestling Varsity Club 4; Homeroom Officer 4 DICUS, CHARLES 3and 1; Attended Knobel High Sct ool; Choir 2; Future Farmer 2; Baseball ; 3: Class Officer 3 DIXON, DUANNE Drum and Bugle Corps 2, 3, 4; Majorette 4; Student Council Officer 4; Year Book Staff 4; All School Play 3, 4; Homeroom Officer 1, 2, 3; Swimming Club 1, 2, 3; A Cappella Choir 2, 3, 4; Double Octette 3, 4; Interclass Sports 4; Thespians 4; Lifesaving 4; One Act Plays 4; Senior Play 4 DOERING, GENE Football 1, 2, 3, 4; Basketball 1, 2, 3; Tennis 1: Varsity Club 1, 2,3, 4; Thespians 4; Student Cou cil 3; All School Play 1, 2,3,4; Homeroon Officer 1, 2, 3, 4; Interclass Sports 3, 4; Band 1, 2; Senior Play 4 DOWNS, BEVERLY Interclass Sports l, 2, 3,4; G.A.C. 2, 3, 4; Yearbook Staff 4; All School Play 4; Latin Club 1: Homeroom Officer 2, 3; Senior Play ot DUMBACK, THOMAS DUNLAP, DONNA Latin Club 1; Drum and Bugle Corps 2, 3, 4; Student Council 2; Class Officer 3, 4; Home- room Officer 2; Band 1, 2; Orchestra 3; Thespians 4; Future Teachers Club 4; All School Play 3, 4; One Act Plays 4 EDWARDS, MARLENE Interclass Sports l, 2, 3,4; G.A.C. 1, 2, 3, 4; Spanish Club 2; U.N.
