I CLASS HISTORY John Harruson The hustory of the Class of 1954 began twelve years ago when to many schools un many parts of the count chuldren came to enroll un theur furst year of school Through the years that followed, theur paths drew closer together, and un the year 'l950 the Class of 54 was unuted The freshman year for the Class of 54 was an excutu ng one Jum Bush, Helen Southgate, Norma Blakemore, an Barbara Mudkuff were elected class offucers ln sports, our boys helped to wun the 6-B champuonshup un both foot- ball and baseball The cross country team placed furst un state, and un swummung, we were represented by four varsuty letter wmners ln musuc, seven gurls were chosen to become members of the Drum and Bugle Corps, and fourteen boys uouned the hugh school band The sophomore year marked a new phase un the hustory of the class and school We were now a Class A school Competutuon was untensufued and goals were harder to reach Lloyd Hughes, Keuth Hanlon, Norma Blakemore, and Janus Jensen were elected to lead us un our second year The well attended Sophomore Receptuon marked the furst event for the Class of 54. Agaun sports were brought unto the pucture when Wullard Neely receuved the state hugh lump champuonshup ln speech Helen Southgate won the reguonal Dramatuc Declamatuon contest ln our uunuor year, Jum Bush, Keuth Hanlon, Janus Jensen, and Donelda Heuser were elected as class offucers Mr Halbert, class advuser, led us successfully through the year The Class of 54 was agaun well represented un sports Jum Warmungton broke the 200 yd free style pool record and placed second un the state meet Hal Lord was also a second place wunner un the state meet Ossue Elluott gauned recognutuon by placung second un the 133-lb class un state wrestlung Wullard Neely repeated as state hugh uump champuon Ten uunuors were chosen for the Natuonal Honor Socuety Musuc took the spot lught as Jerry Boyd and Susan Scovull receuved furst place awards un the musuc contest An ensemble composed of Jerry Boyd Bob Forner, Douglas Huler, and Betty Jean success and well attended The Class of 54 entered theur senuor year ably led by Lloyd Hughes, Robert Perry Gretchen Heuruch, and Karen Kumberly The posutxon of class advuser was taken by Mr Paul Rutchue, whose servuces durung the senuor year proved unvaluable Senuor student councul offucers were Ronald Thornbury, Douglas Huler, and Kaye Wheeler In speech, Carol Mannusto, Barbara Roberson, and JoAnne Scharbat receuved hugh ratings There were twelve senuor members un the Quull 81 Scroll, and fufteen senuor gurls belonged to the Gurls Athletuc Assocuatuon wuth Janus Jensen, presudent Mullucent Sunden was selected as the D A R good cutuzen Janus Jensen and and JoAnne Scharbat capably headed the Sem and Yearbook staffs ln athletucs, Captaun Ossue Elluott, wrestling, won a state champuonshup un the 133-lb class ln swummung, Harold Lord also receuved furst place un state un the backstroke The total number of athletuc letters won by members of the Class of 54 ran well over 300 ln musuc Jerry Boyd, John Sumpson, Douglas Huler, Bob Forner, Robert Gray, and Jerry Baughey all receuved furst place awards un solo and ensemble contests Keuth Hanlon was drum mayor for the boys Marchung Band for the second year, and JoAnne Scharbat was the drum malorette for the Drum and Bugle Corps The senuor class presented the mystery comedy, 'Mr lcebox, as their senuor play Twelve new members were unutuated unto the Thespuan Socuety, makung a total of 25 senuor members Roger Mulholland was chosen as class valeductoruan, and Esther Gull, salutatoruan Suxteen new members were also unutuated unto the Natuonal Honor Socuety Thus brungs to a close the funal epusode un the hustory of the Class of 1954 The real Gnd l0SfIl'lg SUCCSSS of the class cannot be found un uts hustory The success of thus class can only be found un uts brught and hopeful future , I i I ' rv. . , . , , .
