Michael Sternick. 33- SOPI-IOMORES Our Sophomore class turned out to be very large this year due to the fact that many stu- dents arrived irom New Stanton to attend Youngwood High School. The new students made an increase of forty-four over the previous year. This increase caused quite a confusion at first, but it was soon straightened out with the cooperation of our sponsors, Mrs. Cable, Mr. Fox, and Miss Waugaman, and all the students. Our Freshman Dance, called the Puddle Hop, was a great success. It was held in April. Our Sophomore Dance, held in February, was just as successful. It was entitled Cupid's Hop. The class members were very anxious to take part in any activities, and did so. These included sports, band, and chorus work. FRESI-IMEN Our first year in high school will long be re- membered. We were greeted the first day warmly by upper classmen. They painted us with lipstick and shellac. The girls even had their hair plaited. We found our class divided into three sec- tions, being assigned rooms 7-8-11 with Mr. Tomkon, Mrs. Downall, and Mr. Chatlos as ad- visors. Height 6'. Weight 190 lbs. Paul, a Youngwood boy, provided strength in the tackle position. He has earned letters his Sophos more, lunior, and Senior years. Norman Hemminger-Age 18, Height 6'. Weight 170 lbs. Norm, our most improved player of the year, participated in two successful seasons for the Youngwood Railroaders. Despite torn cartilages in the right knee as a result of the Penn Township game his Iunior year, Norm continued to play out- standing ball. Charles E. Peffer-Age 18, Height 5'l0 . Weight 148 lbs. Pete proved to be our best running back. He received a letter his Sophomore and Senior years. Because of a broken ankle in the first game his Iunior year he was not able to play the rest of the season. Carle Greenawalt-Age 17, Height 6'l . Weight 160 lbs. Carle, our quarterback, was a good play caller. He was a help in defense but was also a spearhead in an aerial attack on offense. This was Carle's first year of varsity football. William Lubash-Age 17, Height 5'6 , Weight 135 lbs. Bil1, our shitty halfback, from Southwest Greens- burg, played good ball all year. Bell Township Youngwood Hi's Railroader basketball crew rolled over rough roads in 1951-52. Game after game saw a green but courageous little Railroad- er quintet battle against a league of bigger and more veteran teams. The local Maroon had fight, drive, and speed. It proved a crowd-pleaser through- out the season. But lack of experience, size, and reserve strength cost it at least a half dozen games and contributed to its inability to match the won- lost records of Youngwood Hi quintets of the past four seasons. Late in the season, however, the combination of Altman, Zink, Cheran, Wilson, Testa, Greenawalt began to click with the usual Railroader precision. The boys won four of their last five games and sprung a sensational surprise by advancing to the semi-finals of the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Tournament at Greensburg. Highlights of the season's play were the home duels with West Newton and Perryopolis, both giants among the better Class B, W.P.I.A.L. teams in 1952. Although the Railroaders did not emerge victorious, they had the better of both contests for the final three quarters, turning in a near perfect defensive and offensive exhibition against the pow- erful Perry sectional champions. February 14-16, were exciting days for two members of the chorus, N. Cun- ningham and S. Newcomer. The girls ..59- GLEE CLUB participated in the Western District Festival at Bellevue, under the super- vision of Ellis E. Snyder of Columbus, Ohio. Sally Newcomer took part in State Chorus at Wilkes-Barre in March. This chorus group also traveled to Phila- delphia to sing at the Music Educators' Conference. BOYS' GLEE CLUB . . . A special chorus, also of mixed voices, was newly organized this year. Tryouts for the chorus were taken in December, the best being chosen to practice every Tuesday during Activi- ty period. Porterlield. LATIN CLASS The students of Latin I and ll are members of the Iunior Classical League. During this year the League has been inactive. As a group, several projects have been undertaken. During National Latin Week the students traveled to Buhl Planetarium in Pittsburgh. Here they saw the sky show featuring Mercury. the god of speed. They also viewed the Latin Exhibition. April 18 and 19 several students attended the Third Annual Convention of I. C. L. which rnet in Sacred Heart High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. .-62- STA E CREW' The nine fellows on the stage crew are the invisible men behind the footlights. They are not the actors who receive the thunderous applause as the curtain is brought down on each act. These boys are the important cogs in the machinery of a successful performance, be it scenery or lighting fixtures. Next year this crew will need replacements for Charles Henry, Donald Buffer, and Iames Morgan. PATROL The safety patrol for the school year of 1951 and 1952 was as successful this year as in other years. The troop, under the guidance of Officer Iones, was made up of six male, seventh graders. This concludes the seventh year for the organization, proving that the group is durable and useful.
