we had seen Sally Burnot or Frances Thompson After we had replled regatlx ely Sophle explamed to us that the four of them shared a room ln Washmgton and each worked m varlous ofhces there ln Washmgton Whlle IH Washmgton we met ex eral other old classmates who were vacatlonmg Gladys Greenawalt and James Gault were there ob tamlng the latest mformatlon frcm the Department of Agrlculture corcermng ralslng poultry Although these two are rlv als ln busmess they seem to be on friendly enough terms Upon returnmg to camp we watched a football game between our team and the team of a nelghbormg college Our opponents however hadn t much of a chance wlth Joe Fre lxck Buck Gaffney Bob Heskey and Wendel Ober m our backfield Needless to say the opposlng team returred home defeated and brulsed Thelr most SCTIOUS mjurles were treated by Martha Small and Betty Freeman our favorable camp nurses Sunday alter church we trled to defeat some of our buddles IH a pick up game of basketball but our former Youngwood Hlgh stars proved too much for us The Smlths Paul and Mllford practlcally won the game agamst us Our camp was rather promment IH other sports also Batthng Vlc Placey for example has been brlnglng home so many cups and medals lately we hardly know what to do wlth them all Vlc says the surest way to defeat a rlval IS to lmaglne that he IS a Jap The U S O has proved to be very falthful ln cheerlng the boys durlng the year by brmgmg celebrltles to camps It brought to our camp Eurydlce Myers soprano Beth elda Kunkle noted concert planlst and Earl Warhelt and Robert Stern dancmg come dlans Sally Mlller and Katherme Prescott sang our Alma Mater for us Next on the program was Mary Catherme Cummmgs whose ballet on roller skates held us spell bound Betty Osselburn mlstress of pubhc speaklng and dlctlon favored us wlth humor ous readlngs A number of very promment models among them Evelyn Robertson and Clara Mlller showed us what our glrl frlends were wearlng back home Many of the creatlons had been deslgned by Dorls Vogt At the close of the evenmgs entertalnment each of us was presented a box of dellclous cookles by Margaret Katlc Home Economxcs advlsor to a large baklng company At tlmes our army llfe brought us lnto connectlon wlth government agents On one occaslon we experlmented successfully wlth a new exploslve dnscovered by Bette C ralg founder of Cralg Laboratorles Inc producer of many valuable chemlcals and exploslves On another occaslon we talked to Arlme Faust You see Arlme IS employed as a govern ment secret agent She has been very successful ln exposmg varlous secret plots One of these was a spy rung that had obtamed a number of secret chemlcal formulas Wlth darlng courage she reported It to the proper authorltles and results were satlsfymg especially to Arlme s soclal llfe It lsn t at all dlthcult to see the effects of war on the llves of our classmates Earl Helman our class presldent IS now presldent of the Youngwood Defense Council and IS very ably asslsted by studlous and efhclent lVl1ldred Beatty as secretary Each of us IS dolng h1s part m mamtalmng Amerxca as the Fortress of Democracy Class of 1941 27 ' A I . . Class Prophecy of 1942 Number 30196 C old chills ran up my spine as I heard my draft number being announced over station W HJ B by Senator Ronald Robertson Secretary of VN ar Walter A Thomas had been drawing numbers all evening and among those previously drawn I had recognized the numbers of Daryl Baughman local merchant Albert Mari head of Personrel Depart ment at Robertshaws Fred Lewis W6StlHghOUS6 s head sclentist and hlS assistart Wil 11am Truxal Youngwood would also lose an efnclent plumber in the person oi Robert True whose number also had been chosen Havlng expected this incident for a long tlme we prepared ourselves for army lfe Most of us sold our cars to Jack Bax ron and Wayre Pegg owners of the Barron ard Pegg auto store They gave us all good bargalns since we were selectees Finally the day of our departure arrlved All Youngwood was out to see us off A bandstard had been erected and we heard Robert Zundel s J iv ers swmg out Sweet Georgia Brown with John Hudock taklng the vocal chorus Bill Hoffman member of Draft Board No 3 and Meade Lamb its attorney were there to see us off wishing that they could accompany us We noticed that our conductor and engineer were James Genard and Paul Oravetz Conrad Pansic scoop reporter of the Youngwood Bugle was there also with h1s pencil and pad busy taking statements As we boarded the tram we fought back the tears as Zundel s orchestra played Good bye INOW accompamed by his trio the three madcaps Gail Wagner Alice Repasky and Veronica Nlper of Greensburg where to our surprise we met the faculty of a very exclusive girls school which included Betty Harrold Margaret Hamrock and Kathryn Lou Jones Kathryn asked that we remain for lunch We immediately did when we found out that their efnclent cooks were our friends Betty Lowe Sophie Costablle and Ann Kampltch In Pittsburgh we registered our names with LaVon Tackage and Jack Olson typlsts for the Induction Station We received our typhoid and other shots practlcally pam lessly from the needle of Dr Jeanne Zundel assisted by her nurse Eleanor Miller Hav mg a few spare hours we visited a number of defense industries We dlscovered Veronica Uhrmek in charge of the Purchasing Department for Carnegie Illlnols Steel and Mary Kaye Grlfhn and Martha Evans in its filing department On our tour through the steel mills we were lead by Grier Watkins chief guide who told all about steel and its manu facture Returning to the induction station we received our equipment from the hands of Joe Barna Quartermaster Having settled ourselves we spent the night there We arose early the next morning and were sent to Camp Lberly Md named for our school chum Bill Eberly who was an army ofncer stationed in the Philippines After a day or so under the vigorous training of Sergt Joe Blahovec and Corporal Royden Fulton we decided that army life wasn t so bad after all On weekends we were free to do as we pleased so we made various Journeys On one of these a trip to Washington D C we met a large number of old friends Warren Stroble for example who was too busy with his work on the War Labor Board to see us was one of these We also met the Blzub sisters on the Capitol steps Helen asked us if 26 I I I 1 .1 ' ' 1 , , . .
