Page 55 text:

The role of public schools in our society is rapidly becoming more vital and therefore more demanding. Our late president, John F. Kennedy, short- ly before his tragic death noted that: '4Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. Our requirements for world leadership, our hopes for economic growth, and the demands of 'citizenship itself in an era such as this require the maximum development of every young American's capacityf' You students are challenged by the very time in which you live to take advantage of every available opportu- nity to develop yourself educationally to the utmost of your capabilities. Your school board in a like manner is chal- lenged to provide for you as many opportunities as is feasible. You need only to look at the expanded program now available to you and the enlarged and additional facilities for your use to realize the sincerity with which the school board and the community is meeting their challenge. To you graduates of 1964, I would say you are about to face new chal- lenges. The degree to which yo-u have availed yourself of opportunities in high school will determine quite largely how well equipped you are to meet these new challenges of adult life. To you who have yet to complete your high school education, I would say make yourself as aware of the op- portunities available to you and through planning with your parents, counsel with your teachers, and extended effort on your part, take full advantage of that part of your school program which still lies ahead.
