t unique natural beauty, symphony of colors and bad roads Inga poses at home with her two American sisters, Connie and Bonnie Anderson. Inga in her native Icelandic dress. Being your foreign exchange student this year, I would like to tell you a few things about myself and my country. Iceland obtained its name by accident. It actually should be Greenland, because Iceland is green and Greenland is ice. The population of my country is 180,000 and the capital is Reykjavik. Iceland has been a democratic, Sovereign Republic since 1944. The President is elected every four years by a popular vote in which every Icelander, 21 years and older, can participate. Schooling is compulsory from the age of 7 to 15. Every Icelander who has the ability can always obtain further education in special- ized schools. I live on a small island off the south coast of Iceland. The name of the island is Vestrnannaeyjar, The West Men Island. The main industry is fishing, and there are five fish factories on the island. Most of the students work in these factories dur- ing the summer. I live with my mother, Huldag. my sister, Bjorg f18jg and my two brothers, Birgir f23J who is a carpenter, and Laugi f13J who is in the equivalent of your- ninth grade in school. Bjorg stayed in the U.S.A. for one year with my relatives and is now in college in Norway. I have enjoyed my stay in America very much and I hope that you will come to Iceland some day to see my country. 38 FOREIGN EXC!-ll-INGE STUDENT Iceland is said to be, a land of frost and fire, a wonder land of contrast, a land of the midnight sun, a land of

Leaving Tur- ku, 'amy family and I traveled to their summer cottage near Porig where we lived for one month. After this time we left for Kuopio, a city in eastern Finland with a popula- tion of 50,000. Here, at the per- manent residence of my family, I remained until joining other AFS students in Helsinki 'for the final week and the trip back to America. I lived with the Mattila family, consisting of my mother and father and three sisters : Mar- joana, 16g Marketta, 15, and Kirsti, 9. My father was the managing director of several banks. As mo-st AFS students, I learned a great deal from my stay in Fin- land. We all feel that everyone has a wonderful family in another coun- try. Jeanne Maasz
