The President 2 i E 4- -f 5 E 9. ii 5 '-5: , , A i '- ' , i I Y e 1 K Liga . it .r -Q ff? H72 Q E Y 1' l in f J ' To The Student Body: The editors of the 1979 NEON have appropriately dedicated this volume to the concept of the University as a community center. As this institution matures into an ur- ban university, it is indeed becoming the hub of communi- ty activity. By recognizing and accepting its urban role, the Univer- sity has elected to forego the provision of exclusive programs for a narrow clienteleg and it has set aside am- bitions toward becoming a national or international in- stitution. It has also set aside as incompatible with the ur- ban mission, concentration on a narrow band of programs whose financial requirements are so great they become a sole and commanding justification for the institution s 24 claim to excellence. As an urban university we endeavor to fuse students' concerns for relevancy and the faculty's commitment to general humanistic values. This blending of vocational in- terests with Liberal Arts studies is essential if we are to succeed in developing an academic curriculum of relevance to area citizens, particularly those of the inner city. While the challenges of serving the post-secondary educational needs of an urban area are complex, successful achievement of our urban mission is dependent upon con- tinuing institutional leadership in seeking solutions to the complex cultural and economical problems of our com- munity. Sincerely yours, MQ' G!! John J. Coffelt President
