To the Student Body: As students, faculty and the ad- ministration join together in obser- ving the bicentennial anniversary of the founding of our Nation, it seems appropriate for us to pause and reflect upon the fundamental in- terdependence of democracy and education. Neither exists fully, nor flourishes, except in the presence of the other. The mutual nurturing is so basic that whatever diminishes the quality of one, erodes the other. For two hundred years, American democracy has placed a firm faith in an educated people. We at Youngstown State University can be justly proud of its history as an educational institution. Since its establishment in 1908 as an associa- tion school of the YMCA, the Univer- sity's record of growth and service to the urban community which inspired its founding has been strong. The forces which shaped its course, changing it over the years from law school to college to University, from private to public, from small enrollment to large, have left it better able than ever to fulfill its role. Interestingly, the largest enrollment in the institution's history has been recorded in this year of the bicenten- nial celebration. You, as students who live in a democracy, are at once privileged and challenged by your role. In pur- suing an education, you are ex- periencing an unparalleled oppor- tunity for identifying and developing your own talents. Those of you who are graduating will soon attempt to meet the special responsibilities which will be yours as educated citizens. As you continue to achieve success, we shall continue to take pride in the dimensions of your success. Sincerely yours. CWW John J. Coffelt President administrationlpage 28
