Neither exists fully, nor flourishes, except in the presence of the other. The mutual nurturing is so basic that whatever diminishes the quality of one, erodes the other. For two hundred years, American democracy has placed a firm faith in an educated people. We at Youngstown State University can be justly proud of its history as an educational institution. Since its establishment in 1908 as an associa- tion school of the YMCA, the Univer- sity's record of growth and service to the urban community which inspired its founding has been strong. The forces which shaped its course, changing it over the years from law school to college to University, from private to public, from small enrollment to large, have left it better able than ever to fulfill its role. Interestingly, the largest enrollment in the institution's history has been recorded in this year of the bicenten- nial celebration. You, as students who live in a democracy, are at once privileged and challenged by your role. In pur- suing an education, you are ex- periencing an unparalleled oppor- tunity for identifying and developing your own talents. Those of you who are graduating will soon attempt to meet the special responsibilities which will be yours as educated citizens. As you continue to achieve success, we shall continue to take pride in the dimensions of your success. Sincerely yours. CWW John J. Eshleman, Director of Medla Center A Dr. Lawrence Lubey, Special Assistant to the President The year 1975-76 has been an in- teresting one for the College of Arts but there are two events that have a special interest. The first concerns the start of construction on a 6- million dollar structure which will contain facilities for eight departments of the College as well as the offices of the dean. We look forward to the completion of the building and to the greater oppor- tunity for cooperation that will be provided by having the faculties of the humanities and the social studies together under one roof Dean Yozwiak stated. The second event of special interest concerns a modification of the general education requirements for the AB. and 8.8. degrees that went into effect this year. The faculty of the college proposed this modifica- tion with the expectation that it will better contribute to the liberal education of our graduates. Someone has described the nature of a liberal education as Hdeveloping a capacity for critical thought over a widening range of experience, with the ability to apprehend, compare, contrast, and criticize and correlate a variety of perceptions and the skills to express conclusions with preci- sion, clarity, congency, and taste . This may well serve as a measuring stick for the College of Arts and Science's programs. A Dean Bernard J. Yozwiak, Arts A Earl C. Harris. Geology facultyl page 3 :- Arts and Sciences A Dr. Paul D. After nineteen years at Youngstown State University, they have announced their retirement. Their teaching years have been enriched by a number of research awards granted to them, enabling them to travel abroad. One year after their marriage in 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Minor journeyed to France and spent two yearsthere. Jointly, in 1955, they published the TRANSATLANTIC MIGRATION: THE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN NOVEL IN FRANCE. The following year Dr. Ward Minor was awarded his first Fulbright Professorship and visited Finland along with his wife. After their return, the two joined the teaching staff at YSU. Then in 1960, both Mr. and Mrs. Minor received Fulbright Professorships and went to Denmark and taught at the Inter- national People's College in Elsinore. Since this time, Dr. Thelma Minor has been granted the Watson Distinguished Professor award and Dr. Ward Minor has been granted his third Fulbright Professorship and has done research in Iceland. At YSU, Dr. Thelma Minor has specialized in the area of poetry and drama while Dr. Ward Minor field is fictional writings. Dr. John J. Economics Increased enrollment of 12.570 in the School of Business Administration highlighted the 1975-76 school year. With more students, particularly those on a full-time basis, students needs played a vital role in MBA planning. An increase in Friday and Saturday evening classes and in the graduate level electives were the most notable changes. Additionaly, a new four year program in Marketing Management was designed in order to prepare the business student for a broad range of entry levels into the business world. The major includes a solid background in marketing preparing students for holding managerical positions and eventually for directing the entire marketing efforts of the firm. Other halmarks of the School of Business Administration in 1975-76 year were the new advertising and public relations courses offered and the interactive computer system available to graduates. New faces in the school marked the past year. Dr. Gerald Smolen, Dr. Ronald Voipe and Mr. Frank Evans engaged their expertise in the department of Accounting, while Ms. Jane Simmons joined the faculty in the Advertising and Public Relations Department. Noting increases in all areas of A Dean Robert L. Since 1936, Miss Jenkins has been the recipient of a number of noteworthy awards. She was named ttDistinguished Professor by the Watson Foundation in 1965-66. Most recently, a resolution was drawn up by the Senate of Ohio to recognize Miss Jenkins on the receipt of her Alpha Mu Teacher of the Year award. To her pleasant surprise, she was honored with a plaque signed by Richard Celeste, Lieutenant Governor and by Senator Harry Meshel. The accounting and finance teacher has been currently serving as Secretary of the School of Business Administration Promotion Com- mittee. Education ge 53Haculty The School of Education is concern- ed with programs and activities for preparing individuals for a wide variety of educational positions in schools, colleges, industry, business, welfare, and governmental agencies. It is organized to offer curricula andlor services for the preparation of 1t teachers in early childhood, elementary, middle, and secondary school classrooms, 2t personnel to serve in various levels of school and administrative positions, at supervisory personnel for curricular development and in- structional improvement, 4t teachers and other personnel in the area of special education, 5t individuals for a wide variety of guidance and stu- dent personnel positions, 6t professional educators in colleges, community, technical and vocational schools, and governmental agen- oles. To meet as many of these diverse needs as possible, the School of Education offers the alternatives of the traditional sequence of on- campus courses, plus a sequence of field-based courses each quarter in one or more of several teacher education centers in area schools. These centers provide opportunities for prospective teachers to learn about and to work with elementary and secondary school students. Students have the opportunity for experiences in rural, urban, or sub- urban school systems. The School of Education teacher education programs are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the National Council for Accredita- tion of Teacher Education and the Ohio State Department of Education. This means that students can be recommended for a teaching cer- tificate in most of 50 states, and the bachelor's degree is accepted in most graduate schools in the coun- try. This past year in the School of Education, there has been a great deal of activity and participation on the part of YSU in a program known as the Canfield Project. The Canfield Project in its fourth year of existance, is an example of a competency field based on programs. Two of the several Youngstown State professors involved in the project in 1975-76 were Dr. Pietro Pascale and Dr. Edgar Cobett. Both Dr. Cobett and Dr. Pascale, having taught at one time high school or Jr. High School, have realized the importance of keeping up with what area high schools are doing so as to provide their students with the most current information. In the Canfield Project, students spend approximately thirty-six hours per week at Canfield High School, seeing exactly what teachers. do. For this they receive seventeen to nineteen hours of credit. As halmarks of the Canfield Project, Dr. Pascale noted that such a field based course has eliminated the straight lecture class and can better handle immediate concern of the education student. Because of such advantages, he feels that the program was worthwhile, even though it limited his committee work around the University. Dr. Pascales activity in the project was centered around the instruction testing and measuring the skills that education students or itintern teachers were gaining. He additionally acted as a Project Evaluator. Dr. Cobetts involvement was mainly concerned with the uputting together of the nuts and boltsfi Ideas, such as tasks lists from other participants were thrust into operation by Dr. Cobett. Both Dr. Pascale and Dr. Cobett agree that the Canfield Project, with its quarterly updating and revisions has been successful and is setting the pace for a redesign program for teacher preparation. Engineering Instruction at the William Rayen School of Engineering has always been application and theoretically oriented. The applied approach enhances rather than detracts from the theoretical. In the collage of Engineering they constantly strive to achieve an ideal mix of the two ap- proaches. The degree of success that is achieved can be measured only by the experience of their graduates in industry and research. Using this criteria it can be seen that Engineering graduates have achiev- ed notable success in industry, in research and in the academic world. Dr. Edwin Pejack is a member of the Department of Mechanical Engineer- ing at Youngstown State University. Since the receipt of his doctorate degree from Ohio State University in 1967, Dr. Pejack has served as a private consultant, received a research grant from the National Science Foundation, published several articles and has been the chairman of the Youngstown Branch of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Additionally, Dr. Pejack is an associate of the Danforth Founda- tion, one of the five YSU faculty members to participate in this program. The purpose of the Dan- forth Program is to emphasize the importance of a good relationship between student and professor in order to further learning ex- periences. Dr. Pejack was selected to become a member by the National 1', A Dr. Edwin Ft. Pejack, Mechanical Engineering 7L Selection Committee for the Da forth Program. Most recently, during this past f: quarter, Dr. Pejack became the fir YSU professor to participate in ti General Motors Professor-ii Residence Program. Also throu the Department of Continui Education, he has established short course in noise control for ar practicing engineers. facultyl page mge 59lfaculty The academic year 1975-76 witness- ed a new spirit in the Fine Arts at YSU. Although the COLLEGE OF FINE 8t PERFORMING ARTS had been organized for a year, 1975 marked the first time that the faculty had met together as a body. SPEECH COMMUNICATIONl THEATRE and ART, previously aligned with ARTS 8t SCIENCES, now joined MUSIC to form the newest college in the University. Dr. William R. McGraw, who had previously taught at W. Virginia University, Ohio University, and the University of Michigan in the field of Theatre Arts, was appointed the College's first Dean, and with Donald Elser, Chairman of Speech Com- municatioanheatre; Jon Naberezny, Chairman of Art; and Donald W. Byo, Director of Music, initiated plans for greater coordinated effort among the Arts, particularly in anticipation of occupying the new Fine and Per- forming Arts Center next year. In ad- dition, the Dean formed an Advisory Committee which included representatives from all three departments, designed to serve primarily as a communication link between the Dean and the faculty and students in the College. Many of the nearly 800 majors in Fine Arts found their time taken up, often from dawn until midnight, par- ticipating in a wide range of ac- tivities; studios, concert halls and theatres and were continually in use as performing and creative talents practiced and developed their specialties. It is difficult and perhaps unfair to cite outstanding accomplishments within the Arts during the year, simp- ly because there were so many. But representative of these might be the participation of the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Professor Robert Fleming, at the American School Band Directors' Conference ta number of witnesses called their performance the highlight of the Conferencei; the polished produc- tion of uWhen You Coming Back, Red Ryder? , under Professor Bill . Hulsopple's direction in Spotlight Theatre; and the imaginative work in puppetry carried out under Professor Joseph Babish of the Art Department. Reflecting a nationwide trend, the Fine and Performing Arts at YSU have been attracting more and more students, with 1975-76 witnessing the greatest growth in recent years. Dean McGraw is quoted as saying that uour goal right now is to assure ever improving quality of instruction to complement these numbers , and if 1975-76 can be taken as a sign, this is indeed happening. An alumnus of the University of Pittsburgh, he later was awarded his Doctorate from Carnegie-Mellon University. His doctoral research in museology has led to the establish- ment of a new course in museum studies here at Youngstown. The course which promises to develop into a full-fledged program also utilizes a student internship at the Butler Institute and Arms Museum. It has introduced a totally new area of academic study while providing a basis of cooperation between the University and its neighboring cultural institutions. In addition to museology, Dr. Zona's teachings include art history and ap- preciation as well as studio classes. He has also been the recipient of a number of awards and has presented several one-man shows. Beyond his teachings at the universi- ty, Dr. Zona has become involved in many community activities and has presented lectures to numerous schools and organizations. He has served as judge of art exhibitions throughout the area. As a member of the Youngstown Area Arts Council he is currently involved in a major project which would provide a work of sculpture by an important American artist in the downtown area. Dr. Zona also is a host of a monthly television program devoted to the arts which to date has provid- ed a Showplace for the University arts activities. A new statement of mission along with a self-analysis program for the Technical and Community College this past year helped to better insure the intent of the Board of Trustees. At its meeting in February, the 1975 Board adopted a statement entitled 'Declaration of Direction and Outreach . This statement was later approved by the Senate in January of 76. According to Dean Paraska, success in this objective will help the university to develop into a vibrant, comprehensive, urban in- stitutions of higher learningfi Paralleling these programs, the college of T and CC has been con- cerned with the activity of preparing their new building for occupancy. It will the first time that all of the elements of the college will be hous- ed in a closed proximity. Plans also were announced for a new Allied Health Department. Its objective will be to fill a void in the Universityts offering and to meet the need of educating new members of the health care team in this locality. Well, the Youngstown State senior has proved himself again with the announcement that Calloway has earned Kodak Ali-American football honors at safety for the second straight year. The 6-foot-2, 198-pounder from Warren is the lone repeater from the 1974 squad. I worked hard last summer so I could help our team achieve our goal of a national championship, Calloway explained. When that goal fell short, I began to think of my per- sonal goals, including another Kodak honor. Youngstown State Coach Bill Nar- duzzi perhaps best summed up what the Kodak honor means. This is a big honor for Don Calloway and his family, as well as Youngstown State University, Nar- duzzi said. This honor was given by the people who know the game best-the coaches. Calloway has accomplished much athletically the past four years, in- cluding: Hi The Penguins' regular punter for four seasons, he avaraged over 39 yards per punt. Galloway intercepted eig ht career passes. t3i He made 92 tackles as a junior, and bettered that with 106 tackles and two fumble recoveries this year. i4i In addition to his two Kodak awards, Calloway earned honorable mention Associated Press All- America this year and played in the fourth annual AII-Ohio Shrine Bowl Game in Columbus. He also was a Penguin trI-captain this fall. A fine split end, defensive back, a punter at Warren Western Rese High School in 1971, Calloway d not receive a football scholarsh offer from Youngstown State. It was getting late in August th year and I really was thinking abo attending a junior college, Callow recalls. Concerning the upcoming National Football League draft next month, Calloway said: If I do get drafted, I would welcome the opportunity to play pro football. I don't have any preference as to the team, since all I ask is just a chance. A physicai education major, Calioway expects to graduate from Youngstown State next December. If he utilizes the same determination toward his goal of being a coach as he has toward being a football player he will certaintly be a success. Dave Garden AII-American Senior Dave Garden, a regular run- ning back at Youngstown State University for the past four seasons, has been named to the second team backfield for the 1975 College Divi- sion Academic AlI-American football squad. The team is chosen by vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America tCoSlDAi, and the votes were tabulated by Fred Stabley and Nick Vista of Michigan State Univer- sity. A total of 46 athletes from 39 college division schools were named to the 1975 team. Boasting an amazing overall grade point average of 3.8, the first squad was selected from 175 nominees. Only varsity regulars with a B average t3.00 on a 4.00 scaiei or better were eligible. Garden is the runnerup in career rushing statistics with 2,521 yards t4.7 avgJ and 20 touchdowns. He gained 523 yards t4.3 avgJ last fall as the Penguins compiled a 5-4 record. A native of Saltzburg, Austria, Garden played scholastic football at Harding High School in Fairport Har- bor. Dr. Hill ent over a year in the hospital lear- ng to live in a body that was most completely paralyzed. After release his wife began to look for part-time caretaker for her 240 lb. sband. When former AIi-American lly Johnson began caring for Doc the spring of his freshman year, it -s simply a means of employment. t soon a rapport developed tween them that still exists. at fall, Billy brought Doc with him see the Penguin basketball team action. Initially, his wheeIchair was aced behind the YSU bench but oach Dom Roselli insisted that Doc - moved to the end of the bench ere he could see better. He has t there ever since. Even though vhnson's services were needed ge 119tbasketball only for three months by the Hills, he continued to help out until he graduated. Dr. Hill in return, did many things for Billy. The Hills helped me out in many ways , said Johnson recently. Doc was like a father away from home to me. If I ever needed some good ad- vice during my schooling. Doc was the man I went to. Billy took Doc to every home game until he graduated and then Dave Burkholder, another ex-Penguin roundballer, brought Doc to the contests for two seasons. Now Terry Moore and Bob Carlson have undertaken the responsibility. 'iDoc is the most generous and wisest man I have ever met , said Carlson. Moore agreed, His mind is truly phenomenal. Doc, a father of eight children, was a man of many talents before his tragic illness. He was a semi-pro boxer and wrestler throughout medical school, a pianist, writer, pilot and instructor for the Civil Air Patrol. For several years Doc belonged to MENSA, an organization for the most intelligent people. Recently he finished at the 99.6 percentile in an intelligence test given to MENSA members. An avid chess player, Doc just received a HGolden Knights pin for placing high in a three-year postal chess tournament. lnspite of his busy schedule, Doc always had a love for basketball. And now, as the Penguins' greatest fan, he mourns every loss, celebrates every victory, and helps the players in many ways. In all, the YSU team has been pretty good to Doc, and he has been pretty good to them in return. Heis like a second father as well as a tremendous fan , said Moore. But Doc doesn't stop himself there-just being a tremendous fan isn't enough. His personal sacrafice of attending every home game serves as an inspiration to the team that goes beyound the realm of nor- mal fan exuberation. The sophomore center converted a three-point play with 12:33 left in the first half of February 25's victory against Alliance to set the record. The game was stopped and Coach Dom Rosselli presented Jeff with the game ball. Covington wound up this historic game with 21 points. Last season Covington scored 543 points to establish a freshman record at Y.S.U., and he currently ranks high on Y.S.U's all-time scor- lng list with 1086 points. This past season he averaged 20.8 points and 13.2 rebounds per game. He shot a season-hlgh of 41 points against Cleveland State. More than one opposing coach has volunteered Covington for All- America honors. He is the epitome of a college basketball player-quick, strong, sleek, and full of court sawy. Jeff has been ranked among the top ten rebounders in NCAA Division II all season. His best performances this year also included 29 points and 20 rebounds against Northern Ken- tucky. He scored 28 points against nationally ranked Philadelphia Tex- tile. Other outstanding performances by Covington include: 27 points and 18 rebounds against Buffalo State, 26 points and 17 rebounds against Gannon, and an eye-popping 63 points and 34 rebounds in a three- game series with Akron. A physical education major with a good grade average, Covingtown doesn't even think about possibly playing professional basketball although he does want to coach basketball after graduation. He is known to his teammates and his coach as Mr. Reliable . Coach Rosselli says of him: uJeff is one of the finest players I have ever coach- ed at Youngstown State. In situations where we need a crucial rebound, Jeff seems to give that extra effort to get the ball. When he wants a rebound, it's tough to get it away from him. Yet, Jeff Covington takes all of the publicity and community attention in stride. A product of Ballou High School in Washington, D.C., Covington still takes time to sign autographs and sincerely visit with Penguin fans of elementary school and junior high age. He also enjoys his private visits to the Mahoning County School for the Retarded in Youngstown, where he delights the youngsters with his natural basket- ball ability and qualities of human understanding. For the past three years Barbara has been teaching at her own school in her hometown of Lowellville but remains active in tournament com- petition. She has earned 168 trophies over her eight year career in the Martial Arts, has competed in both women's Kumite tfightingl and men's Kata tforml and has been a consistent winner. Barbara is the current Grand Champion of the United State Karate Association in Kata, and the only women to hold that title for three consecutive years. She is the only practitioner of the Poekoelan Tjimindie system to be recognized by the USKA, and as such was appointed the state representative during her first year of membership. Barbara is one of five women to be chosen for the first edition of Who's Who in the Martial Arts by Robert Wall. Barbara's plans for the future include con- tinuing her education, teaching, and competing in the Martial Arts. POEKOELAN TJIMINDIE KUNG-FU Poekoelan Tjimindie Kung-Fu is an Indonesian martial art developed at the beginning of the twentieth cen- tury by two masters: Oei King Boen, and Bang Salimoen. These masters felt the system previously developed were im- perfect though each system had its good points along with its limitations. The masters combined the good points of their respective systems in three years of daily study to perfect the new system. iiPoekoeIan is an Indonesian word which means, returning hands and feet. Tjimindie is the town in West Java where the masters developed their art. Poekoelan is a very beautiful art that teaches total combat which makes it very practical for street situations. Poekoelan institutes the broken mirror philosophy of never using the action of an attacker is never wrong, therefore, you must be able to defend yourself in any situation. This belief allows the martial artist to incorporate any type of technique into the defense. Poekoelan was introduced into the United States in the late 1950's by Goeroe Willy Wetzel, a ninth degree black belt of the system. He was one of two men in the Royal Dutch army who were qualified to teach the Poekoelan Tjimindie system. Goeroe Wetzel taught this system, producing many fine practitioners until his un- timely death in March, 1975. Poekoelan is based on four animals: the monkey, and crane from China and the tiger and snake from In- donesia. The snake of this system gives the weaving movements of the arms, legs and body allowing fast strikes from any position. The crane employs one-Iegged stances, and long sweeping hand strikes. These stances are done rather high com- pared to that of the other animals. The tiger is a derivative of all Indone- sian systems. This system uses long, low to the ground moves with very snappy blows. The tiger stances are done low to the ground or on the ground. The monkey is the mostver- satile animal of the system. The animal employs leaps, jumps, rolls, parrys. and crawls done at medium height. The symbols of the Poekoelan system are the rose and bamboo on a black background. The rose signifies beauty, yet it offers natural protections by its thorns. The bam- boo symbolizes the body, bending under stress but not breaking. The black background represents the mystery of the art. ge 171lmartial arts , c 311:? ii? . page 1 ervuces oi! C v Womanm L ....W ., p ,. 1:... . . 1U. 4. :33... . W . '11 .1 In W i u I W . v . Up until only several weeks ago, in fact, the staff had accepted ionly after near endless efforti the fact that the senior section would not contain major and degree listings for any senior. However, in a post deadline rush, with the priceless help of many, and with more work than was at first expected, w were able to run this senior index.
