Rushing and Pledging begin sorority and fraternity life Rushing and pledging: the eternal cycle of the Greek year; the semi-annual bonfire in which the Phoenix spends itself and is renewed from its ashes. Pledges wonder what happened to the friendly ac- tives of the rush period; fraternity men shake their heads at the way the pledges fail to shape up. Greeks recall the horrors of their own pledge period, and comment on how much easier the new guys have it. Eventually the pledges, harassed, exhausted, proud, go active themselves, turn about to convince new rushees how great it all is, and wait their turn to harass a few pledges. The cycle goes ever onward. Is there anything I can do for you, Mr. Johnson? The tarn marks a pledge of SSS.
