i I College is a strange place . . . . Sometimes It is a four-year fantasyland Composed of equal parts of Country Club Football field Fraternity house And drive-in theater . . . I And work . . ■flPw HW ' IW ft ♦ r- ' ' ' k. i;«u i£ . . . Sometimes, It is a shelter . . . From the world where People work for a living, ... Or from the martial harshness Of the draft J Or from the other assorted Reahties That make up the world. . . . And sometimes, It is all of these. 16 But the strangest thing About college — Any college — Is that it is A place where you go Without thinking As a part of Your life ' s course Until one day Walking across the campus green Or cement You suddenly stop and ask Why am I here? The time it takes Each person To ask this question Varies . . . Some never ask it at all. And the answer Like the question Varies with the person Some never ask at all For a college is More Than the sum of its parts. ■2 5 fS H5 More Than the sandstone and brick The classes and exams . . . The gravel and stone . . . The parties and dances. College is the center of four years Or, perhaps, more Of life . . . Social Academic Intellectual. And it is a place where Men and Women Including that name in the yearboo Number in the Business Office Face in the crowd That is you, 23 Work toward some goal Whose existence is Hard to define But easy to sense. ... Or at least A college should Be this. The problem is That the hfe adjustment Aspects of a college Often become synonomous With non-academic. We often forget That the primary purpose Of a college or a university Is to educate . . . Sometimes, even In the classroom. 27 mp r J} - ' • ' ■H m! f i vr -TT -- - :• ;• ' ' ji ,.. gjg la But we get through Somehow And the tests And term papers And lab reports Are sometimes forgotten On a spring afternoon Spent on a park bench Or in the snack bar Or an ordinary bar Or a dance A party A blast. 29 Then suddenly It ' s all over The four years are gone The campus is part Of our past. We look back at college In puzzlement And just wonder what it Was all about, And even with the wisdom Born of hindsight We are oftentimes Never quite sure. 31 34 Administration 36 Personalities 42 Organizations 68 Sports 122 Greeks 162 Seniors 204 Activities 270 Dr. Howard W. Jones, President Dr. Howard W. Jones, President of the Uni- versity, is a man whose duties revolve around the functions and problems of Youngsto vn Univer- sity in their every aspect— academic, social, and financial. His is a deciding voice in determining University policies concerning such things as ad- missions, graduation, and curriculinn. Especially as the proposed plans for campus redevelopment and expansion come closer to reality, President Jones finds himself forever in the position of making decisions and plans for construction and for attaining and allocating the necessary funds. But aside froin his many duties regarding the smooth and efficient functioning of the Univer- sity, President Jones occupies an important posi- tion as the official representative of Youngstown University. He is faithfully seen at most Uni- versity functions vhether at a formal dance or up front rooting for the Penguins. During his long association ■with the Univer- sity, President Jones has initiated its outstandng growth of both size and academic progress and is directly responsible for making YU the keystone of education in the Mahoning Valley. 36 Youngstown University Board of Trustees T a t t 1 fi 9 l flj 11 1 l h B 1 9 plp M iimjjjH Hi L. io i?. Smith is head of academic matters of all five schools at Youngstown University. In this capacity he admin- istrates University policies and coordinates the cur- riculum. The Dean serves as Chairman of the Board of Publications and is a member of the Student Faculty Finance Committee and the Faculty Senate. Dean Smith is also advisory assistant to the Presi- dent and to the Dean of the Department of Social Sciences. With all these duties he is still available to any student at any time for advice and guidance. Dean Smith ' s affability was recently attested to when he was voted Boss of the Year by the Youngs- town Secretarial Association. 38 John P. Gillespie, Dean of Men Dean John P. Gillespie serves as a key member of the Administration Staff. He often is a con- sultant for the President and Dean Smith, and as moderator for the Inter-Fraternity Council Dean Gillespie has an important voice in deter- mining University fraternity policies. He is also responsible for the discipline of all male students on campus. Youngstown University students can always find the Dean a helpful counselor in ap- plying for jobs and graduate schools. Dean Gillespie was appointed Dean of Men in 1955, and since then he has advised and helped a countless number of University students with a countless variety of problems. Edith G. Painter, Dean of Women The essence of Dean Edith Painter ' s position as Dean of Women is guidance. Every incoming freshman or transfer woman and every graduating senior is granted a personal interview with Dean Painter. In this way both co-eds and Dean be- come personally acquainted with each other and students feel more at ease in approaching the Dean with their probleins. In an official capacity Dean Painter serves as an advisor of the Pan-Hellenic Council, and it is she who must approve the calendar events of all student organizations. Mrs. Painter received her bachelor ' s degree for Tufts University and her M.A. from Columbia University. She became Dean of Women in 1961. 39 The spending of University finances is under the supervision of Mr. Calvin Pickard, Univer- sity Business Manager. In this capacity Mr. Pick- ard must keep track of all tuition payments and approve the purchasing of all University supplies for classrooms, offices and campus. Mr. Pickard has held the position of Business Manager since 1936. Mary B. Smith, Recorder Mary B. Smith in her position as Recorder finds that her duties revolve around the accurate recording of all academic activities of each and every student who has ever attended Youngsto vn University. This includes everything from re- cording grades for each semester and evaluating the records of candidates for graduation to evaluating transcripts from other schools and supervising the sending of transcripts from Youngstown University. Mrs. Smith received her A.B. degree from Hiram College and her M.A. degree from Ohio State University. Mr. Calvin Pickard, Business Manager Mr. Philip Buchanan, Registrar Mr. Philip Buchanan as Registrar of Youngs- town University reviews and evaluates all appli- cations for admission and interviews personally as many prospective students as possible in order to give them professional guidance in their deci- sions concerning their college careers. As the en- rollment in the University continues to increase ihis job becomes even more complicated and selective. Mr. Buchanan received his A.B. degree from Hiram College and his M.A. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been the Regis- trar since 1928. 40 Mr. George Jones, Head Librarian One of the means by which the quality of a university is determined is by the number of volumes in its library. Mainly due to the hard work and close supervision of Mr. George Jones, Head Librarian, Youngstown University is able to boast of a very fine library. Mary Ann Pope Dobrich, Testing Office William G. Nelson, Asst. Bus. Manager Mr. William G. Nelson assists Mr. Pickard in the Business Office in keeping accurate accounts of incoming and outgoing University finances. Mr. Nelson received his A.B. degree from Youngstown College, his M.Litt. and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Every student who enters Youngstown Univer- sity must have taken the American College Test, and there are a variety of test required for ad- mission to the Education Department. The ad- ministration and recording of results of these and various other tests is supervised by Mary Ann Pope Dobrich of the Univerity Testing Office. Mrs. Dobrich received her bachelor ' s de- gree from Youngstown University and her M.Ed. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Since a university naturally becomes an in- tegral part of the community in which it is lo- cated, the citizens of this community are always interested in university activities. The governing body of this school is the Dean ' s Coun- cil, an organization made up of representatives from each of the professional academic organiza- tions in the Engineering School. This group seeks to further the aims of the Rayen School, which are to impart special and technical knowledge based on a sound understanding of science. Dean ' s Council L to R: Row 1: B. Vincent, J. American Institute of Physics The American Institute of Physics is an organi- zation for the propagation and promulgation of physics and physicists. Those who are among its membership consider themselves true scientists, in a class alone with chemists and mathematicians, as opposed to problem-solving engineers. Fre- quently, however, the distinction is the finest of hair-splitting, for engineers often venture into the field of pure theory, just as scientists frequently step into the application and developmental fields of their specialties. What makes an artist? Is he a man in a smock with paint brush in hand and the gift of creation at his finger-tips? Is the artist a little old lady etch- ing quaint little people in New England scenes? Is the artist an angry young man with a beard and a pair of thongs? Or is the artist simply some- one more gifted at seeing the world around him? We don ' t really know! We do know, however, that for the student who someday hopes to be an artist or an art teacher there is a club. This is the Art Club. The club is designed to bring together the campus Grandma Moses, The Angry- Young- Man and the Al Capps. L to R: Row 1: E. Lyden, D. Dublino (Secretary), C. Miller, J. Flauto (President). Row 2: T. Drama Guild Youngstown University Theater ' s major pro- ductions for the 1963-64 season were Christopher Fry ' s Lady ' s Not For Burning , a battery of one- act plays, and Romeo and Juliet . The Theater ' s activities extend beyond the immediate campus. It is the Theater that directs the productions of the popular community Family Plays. Theater productions employ the talents of any student who has the time and interest. The talent needed to produce a play ranges through the categories of acting, set designing, set building, lighting and special effects. Alpha Psi Omega: Row 1: E. Lyden (Secretary) , J. The various countries of today are rapidly be- coining aware of the need for people of different lands to understand one another. The exchange student programs are increasing at a rapid rate every year. The International Student Associa- tion is Youngstown University ' s attempt to reap the benefits of learning about different world cul- tural programs from the students who are visiting our country. The association is open to all stu- dents. This association offers a varied and colorful program and could be called the University ' s best geography couise. There is always only a very small portion of any age gifted with the ability to write well and to appreciate what others have written well. Because there are very few in the group of people we lump together and call students who are blessed with a flare for the literary, the budding author and learning poet often feel the need to communicate with someone who understands. This is the func- tion of the English Society. L to R: Row 1: T. Suarez, P. Lewis (Secretary), Mrs. Sterenberg (Advisor) . Row 2: G. Antonio, C. Munguia, D. Chanpong (President) , Row 3: F. The intricate drill work of the Pershing Rifles has repeatedly brought praise from all who have viewed them. One of the most impressive demonstrations given by the unit is that drill given yearly at freshman orientation to introduce the new frosh to the various aspects of campus life. You don ' t just decide to join the PR. The new PR is a choosen member. The members look forward to the annual dinner dance and various parties held by the so- ciety. Social Science Club Wilma Brown Home Economics Club Social Science Club is one of the new organ- izations devoted to bringing together students with the same vocational interests. The club in- vites speakers to entertain and inform the mem- bership about ne v concepts in the field of Social Science. Although the club is primarily directed at those students who plan careers in Social Sci- ence, it also enters many phases of community life which are of general interest. The family is the basic unit. The person most responsible in today ' s society for making that unit a healthy happy one is the home-maker. Today ' s young home-maker has one of the most demanding and complex jobs in American society. She must be a cook, house-keeper, hostess, nurse, taxi-driver, lover and mother. The Home-Ec Club helps young vomen interested in this field to meet the challenge of these demands. Y. U. Math Club L to R, Row 1: L. W. Knauf (Advisor) , V. L. Knauf (Advisor), A. Collins, M. Except, of course, by scientists. E ' en the most ardent chemist or physicist, how- ever, must ackno vledge that the basis of his, or of any science, lies in mathematics, the orderly representation and reflection of the universe as a set of symbols defining quantity, size, number. Mathematics goes beyond the symbols which are its tools into the manipulation of numbers to describe the world they represent. Representation, manipulation, speculation are keynotes of the Math Club. One wouldn ' t think so if they had ever attended one of the Classical Society ' s functions. The society is composed of those students who are interested in Greek and Latin. Pollock House once a month houses the members as they view slides of some of the ancient art work of early Rome and Greece. The society also enjoys reading Latin coinedies. Miss Nancy Lee Block, a Full- bright Student, entertained the group one evening with stories about her studies in Italy. The Clas- sical Society presents an award to the outstanding Latin student each Honors Day. Although the Society is basically interested in Latin Studies, parties are also in order. Dr. and Mrs. Ives have repeatedly opened their home to the group for their parties. L to R: Roiv 1: J. DeCarlo (Treasurer), J. Rose (Publicity) , M. A. Bianco (Social), S. Sorbo (President), J. There is more and more emphasis placed on the merits of being physically fit. The Women ' s Recreation Association is an organization con- cerned with providing an opportunity for the University women to participate together in var- ious sports. The participation may be extensive or liinited depending on the desires of the women in- volved. The Association has a wide range of ac- tivities. This range reaches to highly competitive- sports like basketball and softball through the very femine forms of dance. Each year there is a series of sports meets with other colleges in the area. This is one of the most pleasant features of the Association activities. The Women ' s Recrea- tion Association trys to promote a program of interest to all. Alpha Mu The Madison Avenue image of the adver tis- ing executive has become all too familiar of late through the works of Vance Packard and the a- droit satires of Stan Fredberg. Belonging to Alpha Mu, the honorary advertising fraternity, involves, however, a little inore than owning a grey flannel suit and a fast tongue well greased with the latest cliches. Under the direction of Prof. William Flad, the organization has become the hallmark of scholastic success for those seriously interested in advertising as a profession. The high standards of the fraternity make membership in Alpha Mu the most coveted honor among advertising, mer- chandising, and public relations majors. L to R: Roiu 1: R. Strousser (President). Membership in the honor- ary engineering fraternity is open to honor stu- dents in all fields. Prime qualification, of course, is a 3.0 accumulative average or better in engi- neering. This restriction places a premium on membership in Sigma Tau. Alpha Tau Gamma Alpha Tau Gamma, the honorary accounting fraternity, represents the cream of the crop among accounting majors. It not only serves as a mark of distinction in the accounting profession, but also provides its members vith a social sched- ule including accounting breakfasts and t vo din- ner dances. Alpha Tau Gamma is also the source of accounting lab instructors at the University. L to R: Row 1: R.Volpe (President), L. Ryan (V. President), P. Squillo (Secretary), F. American Chemical Society Have you ever wondered where the mad little chemist who appears on 5 o ' clock Showtime had his beginning? If you should trace his origin, you would probably find he sprang full-grown from the mind of a mad little T.V. director. The chemist of today is a man very much in tune with the - vorld around him. The Youngstown Chapter of the American Chemical Society realizes the role that tomorrow ' s chemist must play in a jet age. For this reason, the Society was founded to answer the students questions about the chemical profes- sion. 84 Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers L to R: Row 1: Professor Simon (Advisor), J. The A. E. E. I. helps the learning engineer to correlate the theories of elec-- trical engineering with the actual practices. So when you pass a table in the cafeteria and hear inductors, resistors, condensers, transformers and percision meters as the topic of discussion its pret- ty safe bet that it ' s an electrical engineer eating his lunch there. 85 1 i t ' «  i? This will begin to give the non- engineering student an idea of the kind of accura- cy and precision needed to become an engineer. American Society of Metals The American Society of Metals is an organiza- tion of University students interested in the man- ufacturing and production of metals. The student group is an outgrowth of the parent society known as the Mahoning Valley American Society of Me- tals. The society enables the young engineers to view and discuss the processes and problems that are studied in the metals theory classes. L to R: Row 1: M. Maligas, R. Gray (Treasurer), B. Muhleman (V. Economics Student Association Economics is Truth . . . sometimes, may seem a paradoxical statement, but it has at times been asserted that ten economists asked the same ques- tion will come up with eleven different answers. Economics walks that popular fence between art and science. Sometimes it falls into one cata- gory, with pure theory that speaks only in general- ities, and sometimes it falls into the other, when it pinpoints with exactness the behavior of an economy. The Economics Club provides a forum where those eleven different answers are frequent- ly discussed and debated. L to R: Row 1: Officers: B. Reed (President), D. C hristophcr ley (Secretary). (V. Ford Hall is the home of YU ' s gal Fridays. Although the director of the secretarial school stated that there are no courses taught in track for out rtuming the boss or Judo for out wrestling the boss, he assured us that YU secretarial graduate is very capable in all fields of office work. Maybe part of the efficiency of Youngstown ' s secretarial graduates is due to the fact that they are able to communicate and profit from one another through associations like the Future Secretaries of America. 89 L. to R. Kappa Delta Pi Kappa Delta Pi is a rather unique organization: an honorary society rewarding academic achieve- ment in a school that requires academic acheve- ments above the normal just to gain adinission. Kappa Delta Pi is the honorary society in the School of Education, and, like the School, selects its members only from upper classmen and grad- uate students. Members are drawn from those whose grades place them in the upper quintile of the University; therefore membership in the society honors high achievement among those who have already proven their ability. One wonders at the term professional in the title, since amateur engineers are not as common today as they once were, but if any organization is entitled to the use of this cognomen, the O.S.P.E. is that organ- ization. This group serves not only as an honorary society in the Engineering School, but also as a forum for the disctission of events relating to Engineering as a profession. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is the men ' s honorary fraternity of the Dana School of Music. The Delta Eta chapter here at Youngsto ' tvn Uni ' ersity has always been a valuable addition to our campus, for it is a close-knit grotip in a close-knit school. More than any other, the music major senses out- of-place personality as he senses, almost without thinking, the discordant note in a chord structure or the out-of-tune instruction in an orchestra. The brothers of Phi Mu Alpha provide an exam- ple of teamwork as refreshing as the music they produce. The organization has a well rounded slate of activities, embracing the social, cultural, and educational aspects of college life. Sometimes in the frenetic pace of college life, with its social and academic loads and overloads, a student ' s spiritual life gets pushed into the back- ground. Sometimes it stays there for the rest of his life. The Newman Club of Youngstown Uni- versity offers the ideal fusion of spiritual, social, and academic life. A member of the Ohio Valley Province of the National Newman Federation, the Newman Club is the campus religious center for students of the Catholic faith. Co-ordinating a program of religious service, social activity, and presentations of academic interest— the panel on civil rights springs instantly to mind— the New- man Club provides an opportunity to integrate religious activity with campus life. 109 Religion in Life The Religion in Life Fellowship is an organ- ization serving those of the Protestant and Ortho- dox faiths on Yoimgsto vn ' s campus. It is also open to those who have no other religious rep- resentation on campus. RIL presents a unified program of religious, social, and intellectual ac- tivities, and strives to offer each student a chance to blend spiritual activities with participation in the other phases of collegiate life. The Fellowship meets on Sunday evenings, and presents a pro- gram that may vary from commentary on current religious controversy to a folksinging Hootenanny. Although the Penguins out- played and compiled higher statistics than their opponents, You ngstown posted a 5-4-1 record. Two of these defeats came in the final 30 seconds of play. In the opening game, Youngstown was defeated in the last 30 seconds of play by a formidable Texas Lutheran team. Central Michigan visited Youngstown the following week and came from behind in the final 30 seconds to scratch a 7-7 tie. The Penguins traveled to Susquehanna for their next contest. Again the Youngstown team suffered a heartbreaking setback by the score of 12-7. This defeat also came in the final 30 seconds of play. Youngstown played its first Saturday afternoon game against a highly rated McMurry team. This time the hard charging line and the excellent Pen- guin backfield were not to be denied a well de- served victory by downing their foe 17-12. Youngs- town continued to play good football as they Avent on to defeat Southern Connecticut, 12-0, witnessed by a large Homecoming cro vd. The following week Youngstown defeated the nationally rated Baldwin Wallace team 16-14. The Rubber Bowl of Akron was the scene of the next game. Akron provided too much opposi- tion against which Youngstown could not get started and so lost 21-7. Youngstown recorded two more victories down- ing Gustavus Adolphus 26-6 and Augustana 26-7. For the final game of the season Youngstown traveled to Kentucky and played a hard nosed Eastern Kentucky team. Youngstown came out on the short end of the 34-14 score. Youngstoum Opponent 7 . . On January 11, the Penquins soundly tromped Lakeland College of Wisconsin 127-53 and then on January 29, Geneva College fell victim to a 127-71 YU victory. Youngstown University ran up 16 straight victories before suffering its first defeat to a powerful Central State squad 75-69 on the Maurader home floor. Following the game, the squad received another blow with the an- nouncement that star rebounder and scorer, Ronnie Allen, would be ineligible for the sec- ond semester. At that time, Allen was averaging 16 points and 15 rebounds per game. This loss was severely felt when the team traveled to Erie, Pa. to Gannon College four days later. Gannon soundly defeated Youngs- town 78-63 which reversed an earlier 74-44 YU victory. The next six games were ended in victory with YU receiving an invitation to the NCAA Tournament in Akron. 139 Not A Good Year, A Great Year! They went on to win the next four games, Geneva, Alliance, and Fenn. Fenn College was on the short end of a double header. Saint Vincents proved too much for the Pen- quins ending the winning streak. Youngstown got back on the road to victory by defeating Clarion twice, the Barons of Steubenville, and Alliance College on their home field. The YU nine made a trip to Berea to face a formidable Baldwin-Wallace team. The hard hitting Yellow- jackets handed Youngsto vn its fourth and final defeat of the season. Alpha Kappa Alpha Alpha Kappa Alpha is a national social sorority founded in January 1908, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. While its main purpose is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards and to promote unity and friendship, its effects go far deeper than that. In addition to supporting and promoting those standards and ideals that it is ifficially pledged to encourage, a sorority reaches into each member ' s life with profound effect. The result is often a more mature outlook on life and an increased self-confidence on the part of the member. The merger, in August 1962, of Kappa Sigma Kappa and Theta Xi national fraternities neces- sitated a name change for the Youngs- town Chapter but left the competitive spirit and ideals of its members un- diminished. The merger has brought new strength to the Kappa Alpha Chapter, and the past year has seen it prosper and grow. Theta Xi National Fraternity was founded on April 29, 1864, at Ren- saller, New York, and the Kappa Alpha Chapter was founded at Youngs- town University in 1940. One of the most noted of Theta Xi ' s many activities at Y.U. is the an- nual Sadie Hawkins Day Dance and attendant festivities. Patterned after the famous Dogpatch celebration of cartoonist Al Capp, Sadie Hawkins Day features a race of horrifying pro- portions followed by a dance at which the victorious femmes exhibit their not-so-unwilling victims. Its Beta Upsilon Chapter was initi- ated on the Youngstown University campus on March 31, 1962. Since its founding here, the fraternity has grown in stature and strengthened itself through stressing its ideals of scholarship and cultural, social, athletic, and fraternal activity. Zeta Beta Tau seeks to further brotherhood through close association among its brothers, not only on campus but also in social life. Its well-developed social program offers frequent opportunity for ZBT ' s to relax and enjoy the many rewarding aspects of fraternity life. The center of this life is the new ZBT house, located at 14 Indiana Avenue. The house provides living quarters for twenty of the fraternity ' s members and serves as a meeting place for all the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau. The projects of this service fraternity are varied and far reaching, but all have as their goal a positive addition to the well-being of the school or the community. Whether building a float for the Homecoming Queen or guiding high school students on campus for college entrance testing, the brothers of Alpha Phi Omega show themselves to be dedicated and hard workers who are an asset to Youngstown University. Gamma Sigma Sigma This year commemorates the fourteenth year on campus for the University ' s only service soror- ity. Gamma Sigma Sigma is an organization made up of both sorority and independent women. It exists to provide service wherever needed. The charming Gamma Sig ' s stand ready to serve as hostesses for teas, as usherettes for convo- cations, and as vorkers whenever they can be of aid. The sorority women often provide a touch of femininity in what would otherwise be a somberly formal and academic setting and by their presence enhance innumerable functions. Every student has a part in this interaction of plan and fate that makes a University. I have tried to amass this year, giving something signifi- cantly personal to every student. The expec- tation of original planning being realized by chance, second thought, skill, oversight, and production schedules, have resolved them- selves. I give it to you. Tom LafFey The NEON staff acknowledges: Dorthy Forney, Yearbook Advisor; Jim McWilliams and Foote : Davies, for printing; Irving Lloyd and Bill Abey, for photography; and all the various organizations and departments of the University for their cooperation.
