Dean DR. IOSEPH E. SMITH In a recent address before the students of the University of Toronto, the speaker approached the final point of his speech by asking, And finally, students, what do you owe your Alma Mater? And then as he indulged in a dramatic pause, a student heckler shouted, Tuition and Fees! It is our hope that now or later you will owe the University no tuition or fees but rather a realization that your money was spent to acquire the three basic objectives of a liberal education: respect for individual man, acceptance of social responsibility and awareness of interdependence. May the four years spent with us in pursuit of these objectives be the happiest years of your lite. JOSEPH E. SMITH 18

To the Senior Class. 1960 Your years at Youngstown University have been a period of absorption in your own immediate problems and personal search for knowledge with which to solve them. You are free now to put that learning to the test of experience. It is a test which offers adventure and the challenge of goals beyond those of personal success. In concern with day to day planning it is easy to lose perspective. Perhaps it is well to be reminded occasionally of Alfred North Whitehead's statement that it is high aims which give ultimate meaning to life: only in conforming his individual purposes to ideals be- yond personal limitations can the wise man face his fate, master of his soul. n HOWARD W. IONES, President 17

Registrar PHILIP P. BUCHANAN One does not get rich in material things by working for an educational institution. I came to Youngstown University in 1927 and as I look back over the years and think of the fine young people I have encouraged to go to college, many of whom have graduated and gone out to responsible posi- tions, I feel a sense of deep satisfaction and I have a renewed faith in the youth of today. I am confident that our world is safe in their hands. I would not trade the friendships I have made at Youngstown University for any material gains which I might have made in another field of endeavor. PHILIP P. BUCHANAN 19
