Fore ord Wir, as college students and potential graduates, must ask ourselves what is and what will be expected of us. , Many of us have never taken time to analyze our actual positions. But heeause we are supposedly mature young men and women, wel cannot avoid considering the social position demanded of us as people witll college hack- grounds. Yve are torn between two forces-privilege and responsibility. Un the one hand, society gives us certain privileges significant ol' its awareness of our educational background. Un the other hand, by giving us these privileges, it heaps innumerable responsibilities upon us. The responsibilities are what we lind dillicult to consider, but we must. g Our responsibility starts in the classroom. We must admit tlhat it is often simple to get, without much elfort, a passing grade in some threq-hour courses. However, we can only present ourselves as responsible people through intensive effort in the attainment of knowledge. Society gives us the privilege and re- sponsibility ol' being critical of what is going on about us. Unly through excellence in all we do, can we be competent critics of our society. We cannot simply be critical, we nulst also be constructive and creative in our approach to our society. We must oller workable solutionls to the prob- lems made evident by our criticisms. That is why our first rcspolisibility begins in the classroom, for here we can gain information and thought to guide us in our responsible positions. , The responsibility does -not end with the acquirelnent of the degree. Rather, it becomes greater and often harder to manage, for the classroom discipline is removed. Xve must eventually depend upon ourselves. The privi- leges gained from being college students do not seem equal tor the great re- sponsibilities we acquire, but it is a worthwhile privilege to aeqtiire the ability to fulfill great responsibility adequately. i
