The duties of the Dean are many and varied, but Dean Smith handles them with efficiency and skill. The recruitment and supervision of fac- ulty personnel takes a large part of his time. There is always an open door, a friendly smile, and an in- terested listener to any student who wants to chat or needs expert ad- vice. Youngstown's Doc Smith is a man we are proud to claim. DEAN JOSEPH E. SMITH Dr. joseph E. Smith came to Youngstown College in l92l. Although teaching full-time at Hiram Col- lege during the day, he served as part-time profes- sor here in the evenings. In l937 he became head of the Social Science Department. He was appointed Dean of Men of the college in l939, and in l949 became Dean of the College and Dean of the Col- lege of Arts and Sciences. , While a student at Nebraska University, Doctor Smith won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford Uni- versity in England. He received his B. A. degree from Oxford, his A. M. from Nebraska University, ianddhis Ph. D. from Wallas College, London, Eng- an . In l94O Doctor Smith did extensive research in the field of labor for Transcontinental Research, lnc., in New York City. During the war he was director of the War Manpower Commission in the Youngstown area. His many obligations have never caused him to lose his personal touch and he is admired and re- spected by the students and faculty alike.

A P. CALVIN PICKARD Business Manager William G. Nelson, came to Youngstown College in November l946. Previously he had been with the Home Builders Research Insti- tute in Washington, D. C., as chief accoun- tant. During the war he served with the llth Airborne Division in New Guinea, the Philip- pines and japan. As chief warrant officer he served as Assistant Regimental Adjutant and Battalion Adjutant and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. Mr. Nelson was graduated from Youngs- town College with an A. B. degree. He is work- ing toward his A. M. degree with a major in industry at the University of Pittsburgh. WILLIAM G. NELSON Ass't. Business Manager 'gaadaeaa Obljfdae The loyalty, service, and unceasing devotion to Youngstown College is typified by Business Manager, P. Calvin Pickard. Since he came to Youngstown College l5 years ago, Mr. Pickard has watched with pride the expansion of the college. He has skillfully supervised the busi- ness financial program of the school. His en- tire service has been characterized by his keen business acumen, his long hours of work, and his particular attention to details. Before coming to Youngstown College Mr. Pickard had fifteen years of teaching and vo- cational experience in accounting, auditing, office management, credit, cost, and financial management. I 1 DEAN R. L. MILLER Dean Robert L. Miller came to Youngstown College in August 1946 as a full-time assistant professor. After graduating from Ohio State University, where he received the degree of B. S. in Business Adminis- tration, he became instructor in business organization at Capital University. From 1942 through 1945 he served in the Army. In 1949 he was appointed Dean of the School of Business Administration at Youngstown College.
