December spells Christmas and the many activities which are a part of the holiday season. Although a short school month, December surpasses all others in number and variety of college and organization sponsored events. A-Phi-O's annual food drive met with laudable suc- cess, thanks to hearty campus -cooperation, adding a touch of the true spirit of Christmas to pre-vacation campus activity. YoCo'ites enjoyed an unusually long holiday vacation, from Dec. l5 to lan. 3, during which time dances, parties and dinners were held by various groups. The annual Snowflakes Frolic, a Student Council sponsored activity, held Dec. 6 at the Elms Ballroom, was steered by Chairman jody DeCenaro, whose choice of lovely hostesses-Kathy Shabala, Norma Could, Claire lVlcKay, Kathryn johnson, jean Law and Pat Dymondg and orchestra-johnny Long, proved an effective draw- ing card to the 3000 students who attended. YoCo papas and their kiddies assembled in the Man- chester Room of the Y.lVl.C.A. Dec. l8, as guests of the Phi Lambs at their yearly Papa Party. R.l.L. sponsored a Christmas dance Dec. Zl, pre- ceeded by a candlelight service at Trinity Methodist Church, in which members participated. Climaxing this round of festivities was the Sig Delt Christmas Dance on Dec. 25, a semi-formal affair enjoyed by throngs of students who danced to the music of Benny jones and his orchestra at Stambaugh Audi- torium. , , ., It I rf. yt, The Bonnell Building next to the Public Library housed the college in 1923. Original Youngstown College Old YMCA at Federal and Champion The Iohri Wick mansion 410 Wick Ave was pur- chased in 1926 for the college Some fifty years ago in response to an urgent need, the Y.M.C.A. offered educational opportunities in evening classes for employed men and boys. lt was a very modest begin- ning and the enterprise was then known -as the Youngstown Association School. At that time the Y's facilities were quite adequate for the curriculum which was entirely vocational. ln l908, however, the school of law was organized with a beginning class of nine students, Commerce and finance classes were also initiated. ln l92O the law course was expanded and for the first time, the school was authorized to grant a degree-bachelor of laws. All the while, interest was growing in the project and professors from nearby colleges were brought in to teach new subjects several nights a week. The response was immediate and, after several years, enrollment had increased to such a degree that the Y.lVl.C.A. could no longer handle the load. Out of necessity, the Bonnell mansion on Wick Avenue was leased and classes moved to the new location. The course now included law, liberal arts, business administration, and engineering. ln i926 the john Wick mansion, 4lO Wick Avenue, site of the present main building, was purchased and classes were again moved. Five years later, the Board of Directors of Youngstown College was organized and in the same year of l93l, the new building was completed. The history of the college has been one of constant growth and expansion. The Dana School of Music added in l94l took up residence at 6l6 Wick Avenue, just one block north of the main building. ln i946 the Wm. Rayen School of Engineering moved into the old Rayen High School Building and outlayed over SlO0,000 for improvements and equip- ment. At present the college is still thinking of expansion and in all likelihood, the next addition will be a new library. goal of over ten years of fund raising and planning. Wick Ave. Facing N. 1890 Like every other recognized school in the country, Youngstown College experienced a terrific increase in enrollment under the influx of war veterans training under the G. l. Bill of Rights. Naturally the facilities of the college were taxed to the ut- 'most and an immediate need for space was created. Time did not permit an expansion and building materials were scarce - the costs prohibitive. As a solution, the three temporary structures known as the College Annex were constructed in the rear of the main building. Spacious but hardly of permanent construction, they were a quick solution to the sudden requirements of an increased student body. - Now that the enrollment has tapered off slightly from the peak of September l948, a pertinent question in the minds of everyone today is-what does the future hold for Youngs- town College? The answer to that, of course, remains for time alone to tell. However, there Y are several good signs pointing to a rosy future for the school. First, there seems to be an increasing number of students transferring here from other schools. Some of these readily admit that they thought Youngstown College curriculum sub-standard. Secondly, more and more ambitious people from this vast industrial world about us are beginning to see in Youngs- town College a means whereby they might enhance their own opportunities for advancement within their organizations. Most of these had no previous inclination nor desire for a college education. lt is no secret, however, that personnel interviewers are examining more than ever before the educational backgrounds of new applicants now that jobs do not come for the asking, All of this adds up to a signpost towards a successful future for Youngstown H College.
