IONES President of ihe College In the brief years ot the lite of Youngstown College there has been tremendous growth. Our objective has been always to serve the needs of this community, and since those needs are great and expanding, we too have had to enlarge. lt is a healthy condition, this constant expansion to meet new challenges, and my earnest hope is that ever-increasing numbers of young men and women entering Youngstown College may share in the sense that they are building a great school. Not Pictured-Gene Ianecko, Tony Pavlich, Tom Rutkay, Assistant Coach Dom Rosselli. These huskies carried the YoCo banner into gridiron warfare last fCI11- The squad is composed mostly of Freshmen back from the armed forces. The Beede-men finished a brilliant season with seven victories and a single defeat, that to Western Reserve. The squad displayed fight, COLIICIQIG, 90061 fOOfbCIu knowledge, and good sportsmanship throughout the season. YoCo 26 Geneva 0 The Penguins unleased a speedy backfield to lace Geneva in the opener making their record with Covenanters stand at 5 wins, l de- feat, and 1 tie. The locals scored midway in the second quarter when Tom Campana raced 64 yards for the score, Conzy Lucci spun over after a 54 yard drive to put the Penguins ahead by 2 touchdowns at halftime. Gibson passed to Campana to cli- max a drive that started on their own six. ln the fourth quarter Gibson passed to Davanzo from the ll for the final score. fanecko and Davanzo placekicked the extra points. YoCo 20 St. Bonaventure 14 Pushed around during the first half by a heavier and a highly touted St. Bonaventure team, the Penguins roared back in the second half to overcome a l4-U Indian lead. Durina climaxed a 54 yard drive for YoCo's first score in the third quarter. Davanzo added the extra point. The next score came on a mas- terpiece of perfection+a Durina to Lanzi pass plus a lateral to Torn Campana. Davanzo tied it up with a perfect placement. A converted fumble with Al Carnpana going over spelled defeat for the Indians. YoCo 13 Western Reserve 20 With less than three minutes of play remaining the locals seemed headed for another victory or at least a tie: that is before Mason of the Redcats took over. lntercepting a Durina pass on his own 36 he raced 64 yards to give Reserve a hard fought 2U-13 victory. The Penguins scored early in the first period. A Durina to Lanzi pass with a lateral to Davanzo scored. Davanzo also added the extra point. Reserve tied it up in the same period. The locals waited until the third quarter to score again. The same combination did it again, a Durina to Lanzi pass. The Redcats tied in the same period and went on to win on Mason's sensational run. YoCo 25 St. Vincent 14 The Penguins scored early and often to beat a lighter Bobcat eleven 25-14. A blocked kick and four plays later Lucci scored for the locals. Ia- necko raced 26 yards 'for another score in the same period. Davanzo missed both conversions. The locals waited until the third quarter to score again on a Durina to Lanzi pass. The final score came in the final period after a 67 yard rnarch down the field with Ianecko going over. The Bobcats scored 14 points in the final quarter but time ran out before too much damage could be done. YoCo 20 Lebanon Valley 6 The Penguins traveled to Annville, Pennsylvania to spoil the Lebanon Valley homecoming. The Beede charges were too much for the Blue and White holding them without a first down throughout. They were also held down considerably on the ground. The locals scored in the first period with Ianecko ending a 64 yard drive with a 16 yard run to score. A Gibson to Lanzi pass in the second quarter added another score. The Blue and White converted a fumble into their only score in the same period. The final score came in the fourth quarter on a series of plays that started late in the third quarter. A Cramb to Tom Campana pass cli- rnaxed this drive. YoCo 33 Scranton 14 Paired against a husky Scranton eleven that holds a place among the nation's small grid giants the locals roared back with three last half touchdowns to hand the favored Royals a 33-14 drubbing to make the Homecoming even more successful. The locals scored in every period. ln the first period after a 60 yard march a Durina to Lanzi pass plus a laterall to Tom Campana scored. Lucci scored in the second period on a 17 yard run. A1 Campana scored in the third quarter after a 66 yard march. ln the final period the Penguins scored twice. Lucci raced 31 yards for the first one and 24 yards for the last YoCo tally, bringing his total for the day to three touchdowns. YoCo 28 Morris Harvey 14 The Penguins roared back with three touchdowns in the last half to whip the Eagles 28-14. Pete Lanzi snatched passes for three touch- downs. A safety and a Durina to Lanzi pass made it 8-O in the first period. The Eagles scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 14-8. The Penguins drove 80 yards in the third with Durina going over. A pass, Durina to Organ, put the locals ahead 15-14. Durina tossed 25 yards to Lanzi for the opening tally in the fourth quar- ter. A large number of young, promising players came out early in the year for indoor training under the direction of Coach Dom Rosselli. Unfavorable weather hampered outside drills and spoiled many regularly scheduled ball games. The squad consisted of many local high school and sandlot stars. Pitching was superb. The lack of timely hitting cost the Penguins many of their games. The future looks promising with most of the squad returning next year. Youngstown . . . . 4 St. Vincent Youngstown .... 2 Akron .... The Blue lays captured the National League title with an impressive season record of nine wins with no defeats, while the American cagers ended in a three-way tie. Nu Sigma Rho, Dana, and the Newman Club finished the season with the same record: seven wins and two defeats! In the play-offs, Nu Sigma Rho polished off the Newman Culb, and in turn were defeated by Dana, sending the latter into the League play-off. The Hornets finished on top in the League and played the second team, Phi Epsilon, for the coveted cup. The Beaker boys beat the Hornets the first game but the Hornets roared back to take the next two games by wide margins. Nu Sigma Rho, Dana's, and the Fighting Irish fielded better than average teams.
