A beautiful touchdown-pass from Heber to Aiello was the lone tally. Ros-selli and Varclaro were outstanding for the locals as Coach Beecle used the entire squad in an attempt to deter- mine his strongest combination. 7 0 0830 V YOUNGSTOWN WAYNESBURG 0840 The Penguins led by Marty Vardaro corn- pletely overpowered a highly favored eleven from Waynesburg. Early in the second period Burns, playing heads-up ball, recovered a Yellow lacket fumble which set the stage for a 69 yard gallop by Vardaro for the lone Pen- guin marker. Waynesburg accounted for their score by falling on a blocked kick over the goal. The local eleven uncovered a powerful at- tack in the brilliant running of halfbacks Aiello and Vardaro. YOUNGSTOWN 0 OHIO UNIVERSITY 13 The Ohio U. qridders took advantage ot their breaks to hand the Periquins their first defeat ot the season in an otherwise eventiy fought game. Substitu- tions were frequent in an effort to give the whole squad Valuable experience. 0870 YOUNGSTOWN 19 MORRIS-HARVEY U 0880 The local eleven, playing host to the Golden Eagles of Morris-Harvey, displayed a fast offensive with Congemi and Perantoni appear-- ing in the stellar roles. The Youngstown offense slowed considerably as the Bobcats start- ed hitting the hoop in the second half. Youngstown 44 Completing their disastrous road journey, the Red and Gold Xa i r 58 courtment bowed before the superior passwork of the Xavier V e flippers. Mogus, scoring 24 points, and Kroll extended them- selves in a futile effort to keep the Penguin aggregation apace of the high-scoring Musketeers. Ygungstgwn 59 The Rossellimen shook off their three game losing streak Hiram 48 with an easy win over Hiram. The locals got away to a 23-l7 lead at the half in the free scoring tilt. Aided by the sparkling passwork of their teammates, Mogus continuing his sensational scoring with 31 points, and Bergman hit the hoop from all angles. Youngstown Carnegie Tech Youngstown University of Dayton Youngstown 29 Westminster 42 Youngstown 62 Toledo DeSa1es 50 47 The first quarter was a see-saw battle 41 with every basket changing the lead. At half-time the teams were deadlocked 25-25. The Penguins took command in the second half to edge out the Tech quintet. The entire varsity line-up played good ball, with Mogus running wild again with 3U points. 53 The Youngstown cagers trounced the 40 Dayton Flyers for their third consecutive victory. The locals displayed fine pass- work with the entire team clicking to set the stage for the Mogus-Bergman attack, Mogus massing 32 points in the fray. The Titans got off to a fast start and coasted to an easy victory with the comfortable lead they piled up in the first half. The Youngstowners were unable to fill the gap with their second half rally. The Penguins snapped back into the Win column with a triumph over the aggressive Toledoans. With DeSales leading 31-27 at intermission, Mogus and Bergman found the range and shot the Penguins into a 33-38 tie at the expiration of the third period: this same duo, bagging 41 points, collaborated in the Youngstown spurt in the final minutes to put the locals in the lead. Capozza played an outstanding floor game. 0950 Youngstown St. Bonaventure Youngstown Canisius Youngstown Ithaca Youngstown Kent State 33 An injury-riddled Youngstown squad 53 dropped a decision to the rough Saint team. The New Yorkers set a fast pace to lead at the half, the Bossellimen wilting before their powerful attack. Bergman, Enterline, and Heber featured brilliantly in the Penguin passwork. 47 The Penguins were nosed out by a last 51 quarter scoring spree on the part of the Buffalo team. The local five having held sway at the intermission 30-25 played one of their best all-around games of the season. The snappy floor work of Berg- man and Enterline made up for the ab- sence of Mogus and his heavy scoring. The South Field l-louse was the scene of one of the season's most thrilling battles as the Bed and Gold eked out a victory over the visitors from New York state. With the score see- sawing back and forth, the Penguins were trailing at the third quarter mark 30-28. Ken Bergman then clinched the game in the final period by tossing two goals in the last thirty seconds of the fray. Led by Bergman and Kroll, the Youngstown five came from behind to topple a highly favored opponent. The Penguins playing a fast and rough game proved too much for the Golden Flashes from Kent State. Undefeated on their home court this season, the Youngstown quintet chalked up their eighth win. The locals took the lead in the opening frame holding it all the way without much trouble. Shaking the road jinx, the Penguins forced the St. Francis basketeers into an overtime and finally defeated them for their first road victory. Youngstown was trailing at the third quarter marker only to tie it up in the final frame 53-53. Swish Mogus then put the Youngstowners in the lead with three field goals while Heber applied the clincher. 53 Chalking up their ninth consecutive 47 triumph on the home floor, the locals tripped a classy Waynesburg quintet. In the last frame, the visitors climbed to within one point of the Penguins' lead, only to be set back by Mogus' and Cor- letzi's sharpshooting. 43 Avenging the trouncing which was 39 handed them earlier in the season, the Penguins defeated the Akron Zippers 43- 39, Both teams were evenly matched, but the locals capitalized on their charity tosses for the margin of victory. ,Before one of the largest collegiate basketball crowds ever assembled in Youngstown, the Westminster Titans were forced to quell a fourth period rally by the local aggregation. The Penguins, paced by Mogus and Heber, triumphed over the Kent State Golden Flashes for the second time this sea- son. Getting off to a bad start, the Youngstown cagers found their stride in the last half, unleashing a powerful basket barrage to put the game away. '74 Storming the net heavily in the last 58 frame, the Youngstown quintet laced Thiel for their l3th triumph of the season. Heber, Enterline, Corletzi and Kroll gave valu- able assistance to their two high-scoring mates, Mogus and Bergman. 64 Youngstown College basketeers closed 40 their l94O-4l campaign with an enviable record of 14 triumphs as against 8 defeats.
