Eizbt ' - MR. Joi-iN K. HicKs, Principal Z fire Wvlrigized M1950 Living in a free democracy is a privilege that we cherish. Many peoples of this earth do not have this privilege. It is given to us as a result of spent blood by our fellow man. In this free society you have the privilege of read- ing and listening to a staggering variety of facts, half truths, theories, and sometimes plain nonsense. lt is your obligation to weigh this mass of material, bit by bit, against time-tested standards, so that it can be used in its proper place, lf we are to retain our fellow man's trust, we cannot dic- tate to him what he should and should not believe. His must be the decision, based upon what man has dreamed and done in the past. Therefore, I would say to you, exercise the privileges that are yours in this free society, ever mindful of the welfare of others. Your ability to get along well with your fellow man will be an important keystone to your success. l would urge you to practice the following virtues in order that you might attain a successful life. They are: truthfulness, self-reliance, responsibility, stability, patience, courage, morality, alertness, consideration, straight think- ing, initiative, orderliness, tolerance, dependability and tact.
