If it accomplishes these things and reflects credit on its institution, then the object of this publication will be realized and its staff fully paid for the time and energy expended in compiling it. Now, as we leave our senior year at Young High School we can fully appreciate all that she has done for us. We are grateful to her for the help she has given us as financial advisor of the Record , and for the association we have had with her for these past fou r yea rs. Because of this we sincerely dedicate the 1950 Record to Miss Madge Keller. Five Mouemger LLL MISS MILDRED E. DOYLE Superintendent of County Schools MR. S. A. DUFF Principal Emeritus DR. Ji H. Many peoples of this earth do not have this privilege. It is given to us as a result of spent blood by our fellow man. In this free society you have the privilege of read- ing and listening to a staggering variety of facts, half truths, theories, and sometimes plain nonsense. lt is your obligation to weigh this mass of material, bit by bit, against time-tested standards, so that it can be used in its proper place, lf we are to retain our fellow man's trust, we cannot dic- tate to him what he should and should not believe. His must be the decision, based upon what man has dreamed and done in the past. Therefore, I would say to you, exercise the privileges that are yours in this free society, ever mindful of the welfare of others. Your ability to get along well with your fellow man will be an important keystone to your success. l would urge you to practice the following virtues in order that you might attain a successful life. They are: truthfulness, self-reliance, responsibility, stability, patience, courage, morality, alertness, consideration, straight think- ing, initiative, orderliness, tolerance, dependability and tact. I II946-I 9477 In the early glow of a beautiful morning in September I946, l2l boys and I34 girls, with hearts fluttering and imaginations filled with wonder and not a little fear, filed through the doors of Young High School. It was like entering an unknown valley, green and beautiful, but there were hills far in the distance which we would have to climb or perish. To lead us through the first part of our journey we chose DORIS THOMPSON, presi- dent, JAMES CURRENCE vice-president, MARJORIE GODFREY secretary, and MISS MARTIN and MRS. RAULSTON as our spon- sors. Some of our class were active in the social field, and many were taken into various clubs such an Penguins, Jive-Ettes, Y-Teens, Hi-Y, 4-H Club, and Home Economics Club. Many of our class were members of the band and drill squad. Some worked in the library. In the dramatic field several displayed their talents in A Date with Judy . RlCK HILL, BILL CLABO, JOHN HUMPHRIES and MIKE WOOD played on our football team. As Class favorites we chose JAMES CUR- RENCE and MARY RUTH HARRINGTON. Runners-up were JIMMY KELLY, SUE THOMAS, DORSEY LOU JUSTICE, and SID- NEY KENT. We celebrated St. Valentine's Day with a party at the Recreation Center. Il H947-I9-485 As the months passed we traveled slowly, but surely, through the green valley and ap- proached a distant summit. The nearer we came to the hills, the smaller they appeared, and we ascended without difficulty. Along the plateau many of our happy pilgrims gained honor and distinction. Here we had encamped as sophomores. The sophomore class was quite active in the Boogie Woogie Minstrel , and after- wards several new members were taken into the Thespians. The time had come to elect class favor- ites and when the votes were counted we found that MARY FRANCES JULIAN and BOB TROUTMAN-were victorious. MARY FRANCES was also chosen as class beauty. Runners-up were ANNE THOMAS, WANDA GODDARD, and DORSEY LOU JUSTICE. To lead us during this period of our travels we elected RICHARD HILL president, ALBERT MAPLES vice-president, BOB TROUTMAN secretary, and BILL CLABO treasurer. MR. BEAN was chairman of our committee of sponsors. On the gridiron, nine of our class repre- sented us well, while on the hardwood BOB TROUTMAN gained laurels. Our second journey came to a success- ful end, and already many pleasant and de- lightful memories were beginning to form. We were developing a sense of gratitude toward our teachers and MR. DUFF. III C1948-l949I But progress is change, and we had to move ahead. Other regions were to be explor- ed, and in the third year we reached the Happy Lands of Expectations . As juniors we were far along in self-confidence, and we gained more honors. To the more studious came the reward of becoming members of the National Honor Society. These were: ROBERT ATCHLEY, SAM BAMBERG, TOMMY'BLACK, CHRIS BOLI- EAU, PARKE BROWN, CARROLL DOUGLAS, DON HENDRIX, ROGER MEEK, HAROLD OWENS, JIM ROMINES, MARZEL STIEFEL, TOMMY WILSON, MARGUERITE BURKS, PATSY BURNETTE, DOROTHY CARRINGER, BETTY CLARK, ADRIENNE CROSS, JOAN GIFFIN, RUTH GREEN, NANCY HARMON, BARBARA HOOD, MARY NELL HOUSER, SHIRLEY IRWIN, MARY FRANCES JULIAN, EDNA RAYE JULIAN, EVELYN KERLEY, IRENE LOY, JAMA NEWMAN, JO ANN RIGGS, DORIS THOMPSON, and PAULINE WELLS. IRENE LOY served two terms as presi- dent of the Honor Society. Our football team made history on the gridiron and went on to win the city champion- ship. Thirteen of our class played on the foot- ball team. RlCK HILL was elected on the All-City team. CARROLL DOUGLAS, DORSEY LOU JUSTICE, and BUD THOMAS were Cheerleaders for the year. Tbirty-seven Leading us were CARROLL DOUGLAS president, EDNA RAYE JULIAN vice-presi- dent, DORIS THOMPSON and MARY FRAN- CES JULIAN secretaries, and BARBARA MONDAY treasurer. MR. KENNEDY was chairman of our committee of sponsors. Class favorites were RICHARD HILL and DORSEY LOU JUSTICE. BETTY CLARK was selected as the Autumn Beauty Queen for Tennessee. The first party of our junior year was a Snap Party in the gym. Later in the year we had o theatre party. After eating at the S 8. W Cafeteria, we went to a movie at the Tennessee Theatre. In the spring we had our Banquet at Whittles. There we met our new principal, MR. JOHN K. HICKS, who was to take over his duties at the beginning of our senior year. As a chapel program we sponsored the Knoxville College Choir. To pay the expenses of our junior year, we sold magazine subscriptions. IV II949-I95OI But there were greener pastures ahead. One fine day in September, exactly three years after we had entered the first green valley, we saw Eldorado the happy land of seniors. In this land we saw a rainbow at the end of which, we were told, there was something greater than gold, that coveted diploma. To guide us our senior year we elected TOMMY BLACK president, CARROLL DOUG- LAS vice-president, RICHARD HILL secretary, IRENE LOY asst.-secretary, BUD THOMAS treasurer, and MARY FRANCES JULIAN asst.-treasurer. MRS. E. K. MANN was our very understanding and hard working spon- sor, and we can never repay her for all she did for us during our final year. Shortly after the year began, The Record Staff was chosen. PARKE BROWN and JO ANN RIGGS were the editors, and ROGER MEEK was business manager. Selected to serve as ushers were BAR- BARA HOOD, MARY RUTH COOPER, WAN- DA GODDARD, MARY NELL HOUSER, DORIS THOMPSON, IRENE LOY, BARBARA JOYCE, JOELLA FRENCH, PARKE BROWN, DON HENDRIX, ROGER MEEK, and TOMMY BLACK. TOMMY was the head usher. Seniors on the football team were: SAM ARMSTRONG, ALAN DAVIS, JIM KELLY, MIKE WOOD, BOB TROUTMAN, HUBERT Thirty-right WOLIVER, BOB MUCKE, HERMAN COL- LINS, JACK PARKER, BILL McCOY, BILL CLABO, and RlCK HILL. Our brilliant captain RlCK HILL was elected, along with BOB MUCKE, to the All- City and All-East Tennessee Teams. HUBERT WOLIVER, JACK PARKER, and BOB TROUT- MAN were on the All-City team. Cheerleaders were CARROLL DOUGLAS, DORSEY LOU JUSTICE, DORIS THOMPSON, and BUD THOMAS. TOMMY BLACK served as manag- er of the cheerleaders. The first party of our senior year was a square dance in the gym. Everyone had a wonderful time, with MR. HICKS joining in the square dancing. In the social light many represented our class in the various clubs. MARY FRANCES JULIAN was president of the Jive-Ettes, ANNE THOMAS president of the Y-Teens, and WANDA GODDARD president of the Pen- gums. In basketball BOB TROUTMAN, JACK PARKER, BUD THOMAS, and ALAN DAVIS added their excellent performances to the squad. In December a Beauty Pageant, which was sponsored by the senior class, was given in the gym. There were four contestants from each class. The winner from the senior class was DORSEY LOU JUSTICE. After the candi- dates made their appearance, there was danc- ing. ' The good citizen D.A.R. award was earned by IRENE LOY. TOMMY BLACK and SAMMY BAMBERG shared the coveted title of Best Thespians . RICHARD HILL and DORSEY LOU JUSTICE were elected by the student body as MR. YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL and MISS YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL. For class favorites we elected CARROLL DOUGLAS and MARY FRANCES JULIAN. Again members of our class showed dra- matic ability in the play, No Place to Park . During the four years of our travel through this wonderful country we have re- ceived invaluable guidance, and we shall never forget the patience and kind understanding of MR. DUFF, MR. HICKS, and our teachers. We hope that we have been worthy of our activities. We know that in the years ahead, as we explore the land of tomorrow, we shall realize the full value of these years of train- ing, preparation, and study. Roger Meek, Historian rg i. The Association was reorganized April I949 for the following purposes: To promote school spirit, to support the administration in all its activities, and to help make Young High an active community center. To have periodical programs, to renew our friendships and enjoy a grand fellowship together. The Alumni of Young High School realize more and more as the years go by that they received valuable knowledge and inspiration for better living from their Alma Mater. Frankly, is it not fair that we contribute to the institution that has meant and will continue to mean so much to us? Football was not introduced at Young until I0 years later. In I923 Coach R. B. Houston organized the first football team. That first year our team met such formidable opponents as Oliver Springs, Wheat, Sevierville, and Morristown. A visiting team of that day received the huge sum of fifty dollars. In those early days the football games were played in the afternoon on nearby playgrounds and fields, and all the basketball games could be found on outdoor dirt courts, before the gym was built. Mr. Houston was followed by Mr. Floyd Bean, who in turn was followed by Mr. L. B. lFarmerl Johnson. Young was now coming into her own on the football field. While Mr. Johnson was coach, Young was recognized as a power in own? the state by her victory over Central High School. During the years that followed, the Yellowjackets were coached by Coaches Wade Weaver, Ray Shular, Roy Harmon, Lloyd Marchant, and H. B. lBudl McCall, in that order. ln addition to the progress made in foot- ball and basketball, Young now has an active sports program for girls. Girls' Intramurals are under the direction of Mrs. Joyce Whaley, teacher of physical education. These games include volleyball, basketball, softball, paddle tennis, shuffleboard, and ping pong. Students fill positions of leadership as manager, team captains, and game officials. Awards include the engraving of the names of the winning team and the outstanding athlete on a per- manent plaque, and the awarding of medals, monogrcims, and letters to those who earn them. We can truly say that Young High has come a long way in athletics, and there is no doubt that she will continue to advance. 1949 SCHEDULE Young High 7 Young High l4 Young High 6 Young High lHomecomingl 20 Young High 27 Young High 34 Young High 40 Young High l4 Young High 34 Young High 20 N inety-eight Stair Tech 0 Chattanooga Central 7 Rule High 0 Baylor l2 Central High 6 Morristown High 6 Sullivan High O Knoxville High 20 LaFollette 6 Kingsport High 25 MR. Only two returning letter-men supported the basketball squad, and these, Bob Troutman and Bud Thomas, were named co-cap- tains for the season. The Jackets following a slow start quickly found their stride, and played on to win many important games. They claimed one of the best seasons ever boasted by an orange and black quintet. The Yellowjackets were as successful in the I948 baseball season as they were in the i949 football season. They won eight contests and dropped three. Only four members of the team graduated, so we are expecting a better l95O team because af the experience members acquired last year.
