The little fellow hasn't missed a thing. He's heard all, seen all, and now tells all. This is the record of the students and their activities as he observed them. Our thanks go to Munroe Leaf tor his generosity in permitting us to use his creation, The Watchbird. wif. muff . . . we 6A,6lI'lCQ 0 y0ufA lt is the fully educated young people who have the capacity and the spirit for that leadership for which the world is waiting. They have not only knowledge and skill and trained mind, they have more. They have the will to serve, and God's law is the law of service. They have sympathy with need, and it is the world's need which appeals for their service and offers them opportunity. They have faith in development from within. Because of their vision, their capacity, their courage, they have it in their power to build a new world on the ruins wrought incidentally by war. H. G. Wells, in closing his book, The Outline of History , affirms that human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe, and he further declares that education is the preparation of the individual for the Community. If the true end of education is indeed one with the true aim of life, then that end is not attained until a man comes to give the best that is in him to loving service of his fellows. Thus only can one live a truly successful life. DEDICATION Because he has served the school unselfishly for so many years, Because he has tempered justice with kind- ness, efficiency with patience, all things with humor, Because he has been so tolerant of our short- comings and so interested in our success, We sincerely dedicate this I947 Record to Mr. S. A. Duff. W: MR. S. A. MM is BETTY ANN GILLESPIE JIM JOHNSON WP BOYD HINES FREDA WATSON Before us men have flourished just as we Now flourishg others yet again shall be Whose generations we shall never see. -Greek Epigram. In September, 1943, we entered Young High School as the new freshman class. There were 102 girls and 108 boys. Part of our class came from the surrounding elemen- tary county schools. Also many of us entered from the city school system. South Knoxville Junior High School has always sent a large number of 'pupils to our school. Late in the spring of 1944 under the guidance of our Principal, Mr. S. A. Duff, and Mr. Floyd Bean, the new Freshmen were called together to organize the class. Mr. J. T. Johnson, the new science teacher, was elected our sponsor. Boyd Hines was elected president, Tommy Moore, vice-president, Lynn Rose Stonsberry, secretary, and Mamia Lee Little, treasurer. Our class feels proud of the contributions we were able to make to the life of the school. We feel that we have been worthy in all of the school activities. We have made an attempt from the very beginning ta show the value of making good grades and having good scholastic records. The freshman class was well represented in the social and extra-cirricular activities of the school. Sixteen of our girls became members of the Girl Reserves, and the Penquin Club drew five for new members. Six be- came members of the newly organized Tip-Top Club, and five of the Footlight Club. Two bays, Boyd Hines and Jim Johnson, were elected to the Klutz Family. This was a hiking club which elected members on their high scholar- ship and promise of leadership. Our school paper, The YelIowiacket, owed much of its success this year to the hard work of such students as Betty Ann Gillespie, Betty Jean Straine, Betty Evans, and Mary Ann Turner. Several members of the class started showing dramatic possibilities by being in the Yankee Doodle Minstrel. Betty Ann Gillespie represented the class in the all student play One Mad Night. The football team was boosted considerably by the addition of Gene Burgin, Boyd Hines, Henry Letcho, Ed Maples, and Bill Foley. Bill Foley also represented our number on the basketball squad. We have striven to excel in school spirit. During the strenuous drives to sell War Bonds we bought a bond. We presented it to the school at a special patriotic chapel under the direction of the Senior English teacher, Miss Hayes. The presentation was made by our president, Boyd Hines. The bond, at maturity, was to be used to buy gift books for our library. This spirit was highly commended by the faculty and the entire student body. Desiring to show that we were a well rounded group, we asked the privilege of giving a chapel program. This program carried out the St. Patrick theme. Irish music, .Nia for? of fha discussions of Irish life, and a lively Irish jig were on the program. The Irish dances were coached by Miss Louise Miller, the girI's physical education instructor. ln March the Freshman Class party was held in the band room. As part of the party we had a hilarious pan- tomime skit, games, and jitterbug contests. Our red haired June Haynes was definitely the life of the party. This party was certainly a success due to the hard work of our chaperones-Mr. Johnson, Miss Ruth Johnson iMrs. Adamsl-and the social committee, headed by Betty Ann Gillespie. Benny Johnson and Ada Bowman won the coveted title of Mr. and Miss Freshman Class. Their pictures were placed in the feature section of the Annual. This year was not soon to be forgotten, however we looked forward to our next step in school-the Sophomore year. Early in the year the class was re-organized. William Foley was chosen as our president and Boyd Hines as vice-president. Lynn Rose Stonsberry and Mamia Lee Little were re-elected secretary and treasurer. Mr. Johnson was again chosen as our sponsor. Our class was proud, this year, of contributing thirteen boys to the football team. Gene Burgin made the All-City team. Bill Foley and Johnny Clapp were outstanding members of the basketball squad. Twenty-three Sophomore girls joined the Girl Reserves, four joined the Penquins, and the YelIowjacket staff was well re-enforced with Saphomores. Brother Goose was the hiliarious all-student play, and four of our classmates showed their dramatic ability in that production. Several Saphomores also took part in the gala Showboat MinstreI, and four who were dramatically minded were taken into the Thespian Troupe shortly after these productions. The Saphomores were also well represented in the newly or- ganized club, the Jivettes. The Sophomore Class entertained the faculty at a Christmas tea in the Home Economics Cottage. Bobbie Seymour acted as hostess and presided at the punch bowl. The living room was decorated in Christmas colors and a beautiful tree was in order. A musical program was ar- ranged by Bettv Evans. This function was appreciated by the faculty. Much credit for its success goes to help given by both Miss Slutz and Miss Wells, the Home Economics teachers. The class had a skating party at Chilhowee Park during the second term. In May we had one of our most enjoyable affairs. Something new for this area was started- boat trips on Fart Loudon Lake. We chartered the Lake Queen and planned the Moonlight Excursion. About 130 people made the trip and another fad was started. The money made on the trip was saved to help pay the expenses of the Junior-Senior banquet the next year. Mamia Lee Little and Lloyd Householder were Mr. and Miss Sophomore and represented the class in the class favorite contest for the Annual. 0 , aaa of 1 94 7 As Juniors we re-elected Mr. Johnson Mrs. Phyllis Bland was elected co-sponsor. was chosen president, Johnny Clopp vice Jean Straine secretary, and Barbara Lou A large number of Junior boys were team, which probably accounted for the as our sponsor. Tommy Moore president, Betty Berry treasurer. on the football successful sea- son. Encouraging the boys with their yells were Maxine Pollard and Lynn Rose Stansberry, the two Junior cheer- leaders. Evelyn Hollister was a majorette, and her per- formances during the halves of the ball games spurred the team on. Johnny Clapp saw much action on the basket- ball court this year. Five of our classmates wrote for the YelIowjacket, and Betty Ann Gillespie was named Editor-in-Chief of the paper. The Library Staff boasted of six Junior girls, and the Thespian Club had eight Junior members. Barbara Lou Berry was invited to join the Klutz Family. The all-student play, Sing for Your Supper, attributed part of its success to four Junior actors, and the Thespian melo-drama, Double Door, was spurred on by two Juniors. Eight Junior girls took part in the all-girl mystery, The Other Ghost. The newly organized speech choir contained twenty Juniors, and eighteen of our number joined the Madcap Players. The Girls' Choir, under Miss Marney's direction, was strengthened by the voices of twelve of our number. Dorothy Ja Mitchell and Jeraldine Nichols won honors in the Band Clinic at Johnson City, and added laurels to the Junior achievements. Our Junior year was greatly saddened by the tragic automobile accidents which caused the death of two of our members. Charles Gabbard was killed on February 9, 1946 and Irene Swaggerty on March 30, I946. One year ago thy house of clay Was left to ruin and decay, While thou, thyself, ascended high To brighter realms beyond the sky. Ah, wondrous change, what glories thine! What peace, what joys about thee shine! No sickness and no sorrow given, No pain nor tears for thee, in heaven. -Copied. The girl who was given the honor of being chosen as the Junior beauty queen was Ada Bowman. Lynn Rose Stansberry and Johnny Clapp were Mr. and Miss Junior. Our class parties included another boat excursion on Fort Loudon Lake. The Senior Class was most co-coperative in helping to make this a success. A party at the YMCA was enjoyed by the members of the class. The climaxing event of our Junior year, and one for which we had worked so hard, was the Junior-Senior ban- quet, which was given at Whittle Springs Hotel on April 30, I946. The Seniors were our guests of honor. Mr. and Mrs. Duff and members of the faculty were also invited. Our class colors were red and white. The rose was our class flower. Our Senior year arrived at lost. We selected Mrs. E. K. Mann, our Senior English teacher, as our class sponsor. Serving as class officers were: Donald Long as president, Henry Lethco as vice-president, Betty Jean Frost as secre- tary, and Barbara Lou Berry as treasurer. The Annual Staff was appointed soon after the year began with Bettina Bell as Editor and Betty Ann Gillespie as Associate Editor. The band chose Betty Jean Frost to be their sponsor, and Doris Watson was majorette. An orchestra was or- ganized, and six Seniors used their talents in the orchestra. Gene Burgin was captain of the football team, and he was supported by ten other Seniors on the team. Burgin was also captain of the All-City team, and was on the 'AIl-East Tennessee team. Johnny Clopp was captain of the basketball team. Fifteen Seniors were selected by the faculty to be ushers, and they served in this position at all the pro- grams that were presented during the year. Seventeen of our group served on the Yellowjacket staff, and Betty Jean Straine was selected as Editor-in-Chief. Three Senior girls belonged to the Kartoan Kids, a poster-drawing group and three Seniors were cheerleaders. The dramatic productions given during our last year were highly successful, due to the acting of a large number of Seniors, and seventeen of our classmates belonged to the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society, six of whom were officers in the organization. A number of Senior boys were affiliated with the Bachelor's Club. Our class enjoyed very much the big Halloween party which was given in the school gymnasium, its success was due to the hard work of the efficient social committee. A very lovely Christmas turkey dinner was given on De- cember l9 in the school cafeteria. A delicious menu made the occasion especially enjoyable, and a theatre party was enjoyed by the class after the dinner. The winner of the Good Citizenship award in the contest sponsored by the DAR was Betty Ann Gillespie. She was chosen by the faculty and students because of her outstanding leadership during her four years in high school. Betty Jeane Straine arid Johnny Clopp were given the high title of Mr. and Miss Senior, and Lynn Rose Stans- berry and Donald Long were selected by the student body to be Mr. and Miss Young High School. Our Senior year was a highly successful one, we can never forget those memories that it left with us. lt has prepared us to meet life, and it set our faces toward the hope for a brighter and fuller future. We owe most of our success as a class, during our four years in high school, to those who have helped guide us along the path. We particularly want to express our ap- preciation ta Mr. Duff and to those teachers who have helped to make this one of our best years, we are indeed thankful for the opportunities which have been offered us here at Young. WCC!! 604164 Wdflfkdllf tiki At the beginning of the 1946 football season, Coaches H. B. McCall, backfield instructor, and Lloyd Marchant, line instructor, were confronted with serious problems. One of the main problems was to make replacements tor many grad- uates. Without the excellent training and valuable instruction given by the two coaches, the good record of this team would have been impossible. To Coach McCall and Coach Marchant, we offer our many thanks and congratulations for a iob well done. Captain of the team, Burgin is the type of boy who played his heart out in every game. On defense he made up the fifth man in the opposing team's backfield, while on offense he was like a bulldozer, moving any obstacles that might interfere with the ball carrier. Honors fell thick and fast for Burgin at the close of the football season as he was first chosen to captain the All-City and later the All-East Tennessee squads. When All-State selections were made, Burgin's name again headed the list. He also received honorable mention on the All-Southern Team.
