GIRL SPORTS It has always been the practice of the public schools in New Rochelle to have a specific athletic program for girls. Young High School has done a splendid job on this subject ever since it came into existence. From hard working hands of Miss Chapin and Miss Wheeler, a variety of different sports have been made possible. They are: hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, badminton, tennis, and archery. In the majority of these games an intra-mural tournament is usually played by those taking an active part in after school sports. Teams are formed among the classmates with a captain chosen for each team. HOCKEY When school opened in September, the constant cry on an athletic girls mind was, When will sports begin? It didn't take us long to get started. Miss Wheeler organized a schedule and hockey games began without delay. Katherine Kann's team from the Senior League came out first, while Rose Marie Caruso's came out second. SOCCER No sooner was the hockey season closed, when soccer was under way in full swing. There was a marvelous turn out for this sport. The girls that came out had the pep and raring to go spirit in them. This trait helped the games to be more exciting and interesting. Although the girls had to work under a severe handicap of not having the use of the field when needed, they did a remarkable job. Ida Tretola's team came out first on the Senior League, while Eleanor Morrissey's team came out second. VOLLEYBALL With the advance of winter, when outdoor sports became an imppssibility, volleyball stepped into the role of a leading sport. Late into the afternoon the girls could be seen pushing the ball over the net in the gym. This year 205 girls, 2l of them seniors, went out for this sport. This group formed 19 teams. SOFTBALL There was once a time in the history of women when Baseball was the farthest sport from their minds. As soon as the baseball season came around, it seemed as though all the girls and women hibernated. Batter up! Strike one, Strike two, Strike three, You're out! These cries could be heard from vacant lots everywhere where boys, both young and old, were busy hitting the old apple. But the days when this sport was played and enjoyed only by men are past. The girls of today are just as interested in baseball as the male of the species are. A modified form of baseball, softball, is very popular with them. Proof of this is found in the fact that 300 girls have answered the call of the bat and ball this season. 44

RIDING As soon as spring rolled around, every Week a group of horse-loving girls could be seen leaving the school under the competent leadership and amiable companionship of Miss Wheeler. This group journeyed to Hutchinson Farm, where they spent an afternoon of pure, healthful enjoyment. TENNIS With those girls who liked sports which require individual skill rather than team play, tennis was very popular. The enjoyment of playing the game, together with the value of playing, is probably the reason Why such a large number of girls may be seen out on the courts trying to model their play after the play of the great tennis star, Alice Marble. BASKETBALL Basketball the favorite winter sport among the girls, seemed to have the larger percentage of response for after school sports. As in previous sports, honor teams were formed. This team played Bronxville but unfortunately lost. ARCHERY Among the more unusual sports, we find archery. However, the girls at Young seem well acquainted with it, for every year a large group of girls elect archery as their after school pastime. The dream of everyone of these girls is, of course, to hit the bulls eye. judging from the contented smiles of the girls after an afternoon of archery, we may safely surmise, that for many of them, their dreams have come true. w few. all .
