FMS! 1'rm', lvff to right: Frank l5lBll0llll, Everett Roberts, Sam Pino, .luvk llelnpsey, Joe Rarosa. Srconrl rmr: Couch A1 Holmes, Jack Kolufwski, Jim Dempsey, Bill Lysaght, Frank Simmonetti, and Manager Joe Wiiwker. BASKETBALL TEAM Under the leadership of Coach Al Holmes and Captain lack Dempsey, the Young basketball team played much better than the record would indicate. The hoopsters were slow in getting started, but when they began rolling they looked almost professional in their skill. The most notable thing about the team was the playing of Sam Pine, gigantic center. Sam was the county high scorer and was picked for the All- County team, signifying that he was the best center in the opinion of the coaches. The main reason that Young did not fare too well was the lack of reserves and height. Pine and Roberts, Who improved with each game, were the only ones over six feet. At no time were there more than eight on the squad. Taking the season as a Whole and considering all the obstacles, the Green and White played very Well. 38

With a much improved pitching staff and a smoother infield, the nine went out and really performed Well, solving many difficulties. At the very beginning of the season, Coach McPhee was faced with the problem of finding a new infield and a catcher. Considering the type of teams Young had to face, and the obstacles which had to be overcome, the team deserves all credit which students and faculty members can give. 37

With such mainstays as Captain Schauffler, Niewenhaus, Campanelli, Murtha, D'Onofrio and, last but far from least, goalie King, the team enjoyed several closely contested battles with, strange to say, Roosevelt, Greenwich, and Dobbs Ferry, the league leaders, this year. All twelve contests were played at the Playland Casino, Rye. The numer- ous practices were held in the gymnasium, and on outdoor ice at Carpenters Lake when the weather permitted. Young will be seen in action next season with quite a few regulars return- ing with a better knowledge of the game and the same fighting heart as always. 39
