With a much improved pitching staff and a smoother infield, the nine went out and really performed Well, solving many difficulties. At the very beginning of the season, Coach McPhee was faced with the problem of finding a new infield and a catcher. Considering the type of teams Young had to face, and the obstacles which had to be overcome, the team deserves all credit which students and faculty members can give. 37

'sh Q FOOTBALL TEAM . s..f-..o.:- ln its first year of W.l.A.A. competition, the Young football team, under the coaching of Mr. Harold McPhee and the captaincy of George Straehle, put up a stiff fight in every game. Losing the first encounter to Davis' more experienced squad, and tying Yonkers Central in the next game, the Young gridsters improved each time until they defeated the Hyde Park team. The traditional Thanksgiving Day game with Albert Leonard ended in a thrilling tie. While the team functioned like a machine at all times, the outstanding playing of lack Dempsey, fullback, and Bill Lysaght, tackle, deserves mention. The outlook for the Green and White for next year is very bright. 36

Srconrl rmr: Couch A1 Holmes, Jack Kolufwski, Jim Dempsey, Bill Lysaght, Frank Simmonetti, and Manager Joe Wiiwker. BASKETBALL TEAM Under the leadership of Coach Al Holmes and Captain lack Dempsey, the Young basketball team played much better than the record would indicate. The hoopsters were slow in getting started, but when they began rolling they looked almost professional in their skill. The most notable thing about the team was the playing of Sam Pine, gigantic center. Sam was the county high scorer and was picked for the All- County team, signifying that he was the best center in the opinion of the coaches. The main reason that Young did not fare too well was the lack of reserves and height. Pine and Roberts, Who improved with each game, were the only ones over six feet. At no time were there more than eight on the squad. Taking the season as a Whole and considering all the obstacles, the Green and White played very Well. 38
