Life Underway Life underway can be tedious and dull, so Yo- semite crewmembers and Morale, Welfare and Recreation developed numerous creative pro- jects to entertain and divert their shipmates. With the emphasis on physical fitness in the Navy, aerobics and weight lifting became one of the most popular off-duty activities on the ship. A new weight room and specially trained aero- bics instructors inspired many closet fitness buffs to come out and show their stuff. Yosemite marathon runners braved rolling seas, rainy weather and working seamen to stay in shape for races to be held in Europe. Yosemite crew- members learned to look both ways before cross- ing passageways on the 0-1 level. It only takes one collision with a determined runner to keep you on your own toes.
