Our crew was joined by part of YOSEMlTE's Chattanooga, Tennessee reserve unit, who accompanied us to complete their annual two weeks of active duty. The rest of the unit joined us later on in the cruise, and YOSEMITE was very glad to have our reserve shipmates steaming with us. On our way over, we initiated Fly-Away'i repair teams to the other members of the Battle Group. We continued this Fly-Away practice throughout our six month de- ployment and kept the Sixth Fleet in a high state of readi- ness. lf a ship was unable to come to us, we went to them. USS SIERRA CAD 183 was waiting impatiently for us when we pulled into Malaga, Spain, and we had no prob- lems completing our turn-over within two days. We bid farewell to the tired, but relieved, crew of the SIERRA, and continued on our journey to our first port, Gaeta, Italy. USS BELKNAP QCG 26y, the Sixth Fleet's Flag Ship, tied up next to us upon our arrival and the repairs began. Dur- ing the time we spent in this lovely coastal city, YOSEM- ITE accepted over 500 jobs, including many that dis- patched Fly-Away teams to other ships inthe Mediter- ranean. YOSEMITE crewmembers also spent their liber- ty hours in community services by donating their time to cleaning and repairing a small church and nursing home, 96 and an orphanage and school for girls. Our sailors also used their liberty to explore Rome, theVat- j loan, Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii and Caprice, just some ofthe , l i 1 i l l beautiful and popular tourist attractions Italy offered. e While still in Gaeta, the ship was visited by the Master Chief ' i Petty Officer of the Navy, William H. Plackett, who ad- 5 l r dressed the crew on such subjects as child care and pay i increases. Master Chief Plackett was to retire in Septem- ber, 1988, so this visit was also a farewell to his sailors. We departed Gaeta on March 18th with the first of many V Bravo Zulus from the BELKNAP for completing theirre- 1 pair work expertly and on time. During our transit to Out next port, Marseilles, France, the Sixth Fleet Rabbi sailed , with us. LCDR Sanford Shudnow, Assistant Sixth Fleet Chaplain, rode with all of the ships in the area to offer both j Jewish services and religious support to the command E Chaplains. j i After arriving in Marseilles, me uss CALOOSAHATCWE QAO 98y tied up along side for their repair work. We HIS? had the USS RECOVERY QARS 43y moored down the Pie' from us, and between our three ships, over 120 year? Ufj combined Naval history was represented in the Marseilles i harbor. CALOOSAHATCHIE, RECOVERY and YOSEMITE , are three of the oldest ships in the U.S. Navy, all with ovef , forty years of distinguished service. E The uss VREELAND QFF ioeay andthe uss SYLVANIAE l l QAFS 2l also tied up next to us, and between their repairs and more community service, YOSEMITE sailors stayed busy, We also competed in a Damage Control Olympics between the ships and YOSEMITE came in first place Overall. A pier picnic completed our stay in Marseilles with YOSEMlTE's country western band, The Low Country Express, entertaining everyone. Monaco, Monte Carlo, Toulon and Avignon were some of the ar- eas explored by our wandering crew members, in addi- tion to the open cafes and restaurants down by the waterfront in Marseilles. We departed France on April 6th and arrived safely in Haifa, Israel on the 12th. Haifa was voted one of the best ports of the entire de- plbyment. The crew was able to see much of the Holy Land and the Old City of Jerusalem, and there were miles of beautiful beaches and hillside gar- dens to explore. After a visit to Hareally Elementa- ry School, YOSEMITE was host to 28 precocious children who were very excited about seeing American ships and the opportunity to practice their English with the crew. YOSEMITE was also host to a very special guest, the movie star, Richard Dreyfus, who was visiting Israel and who had asked to meet the crew members of the four American ships in the harbor. He was enthusiastically re- ceived by YOSEMITE crew members, and his delightful conversation cheered some very homesick sailors. After completing repairs on the USS DEWEY QDDG 45l and the USS CAPODANNO QFF 10931, YOSEMITE de- parted Haifa for the long trip over to Palermo, Sicily. We reached our halfway point of the cruise on May 29th and celebrated Over The Hump Day with a steel-beach pic- nic and a talent show. The Battle Tender had already es- tablished a reputation for hard work and excellent re- sults, and three months were still remaining in the de- ploymentl During our transits between ports, YOSEMITE took part In many underway fuel replenishments. Although a dan- gerous and exacting procedure, the Deck and Engineer- 'UQ Departments performed in their usual safe and pro- fessional fashion. Helo Operations were also conducted, another dangerous procedure in which supplies were on Of Off-loaded, mail was taken off and personnel were transferred back and forth between the ships by helicop- Q Q ter. The crew established an early record for dedicated attention to detail, however, and all procedures were completed safely. After leaving Palermo, YOSEMITE made the short trip to the Sicilian port of Augusta Bay. Here we tended the USS IWO JIMA QLPH 34l, the USS PONCE QLPD 15l, the USS HERMITAGE QLSD 34l, the USS EL PASO QLKA 117l and the USS HARLAN COUN- TY QLST 1196l. We also found time to relax with an all- hands picnic on the pier and a U.S.O. concert with the Brass Tacksfl After departing Augusta Bay on the 29th, a very tired crew looked forward to arriving in Palma de Majorca, Spain where we would enjoy several days of liberty. We pulled into the harbor in Palma on July lst and fired a twenty-one gun salute to the port. We then moored and prepared to enjoy our hard-earned days of rest in the cities of Palma and Palma Nova. The USS THOMAS C. HART, USS DEWEY, USS CAPODANNO and the USS SAN DIEGO QAFS 6l joined us after we returned from our six days of liberty and work began again. We stayed in Palma for three sunny weeks, working hard on tending ships and im- proving our tans. During this time, Captain Weeks 2 1 4 had the pleasure of frock- ing seventy new petty offi- cers who had advanced from the previous March exam. After leaving beautiful Palma, we arrived in Na- ples, Italy on July 22nd. The USS VREELAND, USS MOUNT BAKER QAD 34l, USS LUCE and USS PETER- SON QDD 969l were with us, all keeping us very busy dur- ing our short stay here. , ,ll . , ,Q X, W 5--SFX y Qt .- Xstxsa. f. it ' . -X si ttg, E- We left Naples and moored once again in Gaeta, Italy, where the BELKNAP tied up next to us and the CAPO- DANNO anchored out. During this stay, YOSEMITE took part in the Festa Provinciale Del Mare, celebrated by the city of Gaeta in honor of those who have died at sea. Two of our small boats participated in the festival, including our Captain's Gig, and YOSEMITE enthusiastically salut- ed the procession with the ship's whistle as it passed our bow. We completed our final duties in Gaeta and departed on the 15th, hurrying to our rendezvous with the USS YEL- LOWSTONE QAD 41l on the 16th. Our blue water out- chop was completed within six hours and we bid YEL- LOWSTONE farewell and best wishes as we turned our bow westward and home. 97 Ax! Above and below: Members of the USS YOSEMITE crew. We continued Flight Ops and training on our way home, in addition to sending out more Fly-Away teams to needy ships. In spite of keeping busy, however, the crew be- came more and more edgy as we neared Mayport. Chan- nel Fever struck on our last night, and the crew reacted by putting on a Lip Sync contest on the aft mess decks. Although all of the acts were clever and well performed, the judges gave the first place honors to the Dectations. Captain Weeks was also awarded his own model of The Battle Tender from the hard-working crew of USS YO- SEMITE. After an evening of entertainment, all-night movies and popcorn, a tired, but very excited, crew donned their whites and assembled on the decks in preparation for entering port. After six months of distant lands, hard work and chronic homesickness, Mayport, Florida was the destination on everyone's mind. A threat of bad. weather caused by a tropical storm almost delayed our entry into the harbor, but beautiful weather welcomed us as we sailed past the buoy and greeted the tugs who had come to escort us to our pier. Standing at parade rest, we stood tall and proud as we manned the rails. With the words, lVloored, shift colors, all eyes and hearts were on the pier and with our loved ones. The Battle Tender had come home. I S X X X ' X 'lx sg S 5 X4 3, 'N I . s t.
