STRAITS OF MESSINA THE PASSAGE FROM THE TYRQHEN AN SEA 'O THE ON ANI SEA HAS BEENI 'HE B TH- PLACE OF MANY LEGENDS, ANID HAS CREATED SPECIAL PQOBLEMS FOR SAI-ORS FOR CENTURIES. IN HOMER'S ILLIAD AND ODYSSEY, ODYSSEUS, ON HIS JOURNEY FROM THE TROJAN WAR IN 'I2OO B.C. HAD TO PASS WITH HIS SHIP THROUGH THE STRAITS OF MESSINA, WHICH MEANT ALMOST CERTAIN DESTRUCTIONI ON THE SICILIAN SIDE WAS THE GREAT WHIRLPOOL CHARYBDIS, WAITING TO SWALLOW ANY SHIP THAT VENTURED TOO CLOSE, AND ON THE ITALIAN SIDE LIVED SCYLLA, A FEMALE SEA MONSTER WITH SIX HEADS, WHO LOVED TO HAVE SAILORS FOR DINNER . . . LITERALLY. ALL HANDS WATCHED AS THE YOSEMITE APPROACHED, WONDERING IF WE WOULD BE ABLE TO TRANSVERSE THIS PASSAGE UNSCATHEDI WHAT WE ENCOUNTERED WAS QJITE DIFFERENT THAN THAT OF ODYSSEUS AND HIS CREW. WE SAW PICTURESQUE TOWNS LINING THE COAST, AND THE MOUNTAINS OF SICILY WITH THE VOLCANO MT. ETNA LOOMING INTO THE CLOUDS. MANY FISHERMEN WAVED IN GREETING AS WE SAILED ON OUR WAY. MAYBE ON OUR NEXT PASSAGE WE WILL GET SOME PICTURES OF SCYLLA AND NOT HAVE TO STAY FOR LUNCH.
