THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER Uss YOSEMITE CAD-191 CDR James R. JEWELL, USN Commander James R. J eweil, Jr. was born in Lebanon, Tennessee. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1967 and received his commission as Ensign from Officer Candidate School in I 1968. Reporting to his first ship, the USS HAWKINS IDD 8731, he served as First Lieutenant and ASW Officer. In 1970, CDR Jewell served to as Executive Officer of MSC Transport Unit One which was assigned to USNS ships carrying Republic of Korean troops to and from Vietnam. Upon completion of this tour in 1971, he was released from active duty and became sports editor of The Watertown Daily Times in Watertown, New York. Voluntarily recalled to active duty in 1972, CDR Jewell servedas ASW Officer on the USS LUCE IDDG 381 until he reported to the department head course atthe Navy Destroyer School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1973. Subsequently, he served as Engineer Officer of the USS HOLLISTER IDD 7881and First Lieutenant of the USS ANCHORAGE ILSD 361. In 1976, CDR Jewell was assigned as Senior Naval Instructor at Texas A8zM University's NROTC Unit. In 1979, he reported to Commander, Amphibious Squadron Five as Current Plans and Operations Officer. He then served as First Lieutenant and Overhaul Coordinator on the USS OKINA WA ILPH 31 before reporting to USS YOSEMITE IAD 1 91 as Executive Officer in August 1983.
