' ,L ' .-1-,fain-., 11- --4 HIP' HISTCRY The 1977-78 Mediterranean cruise is the most recent in a series of missions that have taken the Busy Lady', throughout most of the world during the past thirty years. She has tended ships and visited ports from Naples to New Orleans - from Norway to Mayport. YOSEMITE will continue to deploy periodically as her role as one of the Atlantic Fleet's deployable tenders continues. Commissioned on 25 May 1944 at Tampa, Florida, YOSEMITE was immediately assigned to Pearl Harbor where she and her crew were tasked with repairing war-damaged destroyers of the Paciiic campaign. Six months later upon completion of this mission, YOSEMITE left Hawaii for the Caroline Islands where she was made responsible for readying the destroyer forces for their part in the assult on Okinawa. At the end of the war YOSEMITE steamed for Japan, arriving in Sasebo in September, 1945. After six months of duty she left Japan and steamed for her new homeport, Newport, Rhode Island, where she commenced duties as tender to the Atlantic Fleet destroyer forces. She remained in Newport until 1969 when she set sail for her new homeport, Mayport, Florida. Here she has proven to be an invaluable part of the Atlantic Fleet and has established a truly enviable reputation for excellence and can dol' spirit. She went to Boston in 1976 for a complete overhaul in the yards so that she can continue to deploy to the Mediterranean as required. The Busy Lady has some impressive vital statistics. She is 531 feet long and 73 feet in the beam. She carries enough fuel to take her nearly around the world. She carries approximately thirty oflicers and eight hundred fifty enlisted men with room for additional men if needed. During this latest deployment, YOSEMITE had tended ships in Naples, Palma, Augusta Bay and Rota. These ports, along with a liberty port visit to Toulon, France has made this deployment one of her more interesting ones. YOSEMITE is currently commanded by Captain Richard F. Donnelly. 1
