Chaplain Knight was born 4 September 1931 in Marietta, GA. He attended Acworth Senior High School in Acworth, GA. He graduated from Truet-McConnel College in Cleveland, GA in 1952, Mercer University in Macon, GA in 1961 and received his theological degree from New Orleans Theological Seminary in New Orleans. Chaplain Knight served in the U.S. Army from October 1953 until October 1955. He was commissioned as LTJG in the U.S. Navy in August, 1966. Since then he has served as Chaplain at CBC, Gulfport, MS, Republic of Vietnam, NTC Great Lakes, IL, USS MT. WHITNEY, and NAS Jacksonville. He reported on board YOSEMITE 3 May 1976. Chaplain Knight is married to the former Betty Chumley of Acworth, GA. They have one daughter, Geneva Lynn, and reside in Jacksonville. Chaplain Knight will be remembered by YOSEMITE sailors as a Chaplain who was never too busy to sit and listen to problems. He will also be remembered for his vast collection of jokes and his warm, personable way of communicating with people.
