Ile entered the Urllvefiiilgnfll South Carolina in September 1948 under the regular NROTC program, receiving a llaclrelor ol Science Degree and usgliuel commission as Ensign, USN, upon graduation in June 1952. His first tour of duty was as Deck Ollieer on board US d ate CAPA 1605. ln 1955 he was assigned to the USS Waller CDDE 4661 as Operations Oflieer, Ile at tended the Naval Poslgfan im School in Monterey, California and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Corninnnications lfngtneering upnll Sfaduatlo 1959. . . Thomas Commander Robert D. Thomas is a native of Mos o Idah c W, o. After graduation he attended Officer Candlflllae School in Newport, Rhode Island, receiving his commissio E ' n as nsign on 30 April 1959. His first assignment WQS 10 TRATHEN QDD 5305 as First Lieutenant and ASW Officer. He then went to ASW school in San Diego as a tactical instrll and subsequently returned to sea as ASW Officer aboard the cruiser CHICAGO QCG I lj. In 1966 he was assigned to Halsey POWELL CDD 6865 as Weapons Officer! Executive Officer. u Commander Thomas has sewed tW0 tours of duty in Washington D.C. From 1968-1970 he worked in the Offlc Legislative Affairs as a Congressional Liaison Offi . . Commander Thomas is married to the fonmer Sandra M cvey of San Diego, California. Robinson was born on I4 December 1937 in Dom, Alabama. He served for three years as an enlisted man in the Air Forceln 1963 he was graduated from Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama, with the Bachelor of Arts Degree. ln 1966 he was graduated from South- eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Car0lina,with the Master of Divinity Degree. Chaplain Robinson is an ordained Baptist minister and has served pastorates in Alabama and North Carolina. Chaplain Robinson has served with the Second Marine Aircraft Wing, Cherry Point, North Carolinag liscort Squadron SIX, Marine Aircraft Group - 26, New River, North Carolina: Naval Forces Viet Nam, Naval Hospital, Key West and Naval Station Key West. ln addition he has had three months training in Clinical Pastoral lid ueation at Naval Hospital, San Diego, in conjunction with postgraduate work at Loma Linda University. Chaplain Robinsonls medals and awards are Navy Commendation Medal with Combat MV , Combat Action Ribbon. Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal. Republic ot' Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation tCivil Action Medall. Chaplain Robinson is married to the tormcr Laura Marie Piper ofDora Alabama. '. ,fn 7 K if ,f-ff, At sea, Mknock off, was a welcome relief after a long day's work. For some of us it meant trying to escape the clutches of the rack monster fusually impossiblej. For others it meant time to read, or to write letters, or to work on courses. Still others mustered on the flight deck to exercise or play basketball, and some just Watched the ocean and the sky, and thought about things in general. In the evenings there were movies and bingo and cards to pass the time, and of course the men who manned the bridge and engineering stations had their long night Watches to keep them occupied. Boredom was never one of our problems on the Busy Lady. A4' , 17 Fantail Feast , Starvation was not one of our problems either, not with our blue-ribbon Culinairy 1 ' I Arts Department sewing up the chow. lt is no small job Whipping Up a picnic for H00 men, but the Sunday cookout shown here was one of the highlights of llie transit. Steak and lobster with all the trimmings - it almost made up for being away from Q home . . . almost. F - 'W' The Naval Base at Rota, Spain - gateway to the Sixth Fleet - was our first stop in Europe. Cascade crewmen manned Uh Q, v the rails and brought out E the brass band for Yose- mite as we steamed into Qi the harbor and backed s Z down into our berthalong- side. A few hours later the Busy Lady began her Tender duties by Supplying Cascade with steam and power so she could shut down her boilers and make vital repairs for the long trip home. These are a few of the many words passed and acted on daily by the busy Yosemite deck crew. Comprised of First and Second Divisions, Deck Department maintains nearly all topside deck and hull areas on the ship, as well as all ship s boats. In port during the cruise, Deck Dept. worked outside under all weather conditions to keep Yosemite looking sharp, and the liberty boats running on schedule. At sea the bosuns mates manned the vital bridge stations including helmsman, lee helm, and lookout. In addition, the voices of the BMOWS became as familiar to us as any disc jockey as they kept us informed over the ship s public address system. That the Captain and crewmen were repeatedly complimented about Yosemite s appearance is a tribute to the drive and professionalism of Mr. Sowers and his men. Deploying with an acute manpower shortage, the radiomen neverthe- less efficiently handled the receipt and transmission of thousands of pieces of radio trafic. With constant com- munications always a necessity, the small division manned their stations 24-hours-a-day, every single day of the cruise. The skill and care of all the Weapons people is demon- strated by the absolutely clean safety record maintained in Mayport and the Mediterranean. Not only did they administer aid and com- fort to the Yosemite crew during the cruise, but they tended to the medical needs of the numerous ships alongside as well. DT1 Lannan ' a 'W Q I f Our first big job in the Med was tending the mighty USS LITTLE ROCK - flagship of the Sixth Fleet - in her homeport of Gaeta, Italy. This little town, situated fifty miles north of Naples, was a favorite stop for many of us. We caught Gaeta at summer carnival time and the town was alive with tourists. For once we were completely free to relax and play tourist. As one of the best cities for shopping in the Med, Barcelona was just the right place to pick up those last-minute Christmas gifts for the folks back home. Statues of Don Quixote, and carved chess sets quickly filled the lockers next to the tapestries and cameos from Naples, the jewelry from Palma, and the antiques from Athens. And of course the Barcelona night life wasn't bad either. After more than a year of sitting next to the pier in Mayport, the Snipes lighted fires for the Mediterranean and steamed their plant con- tinuously for more than one hundredand fifty days. The Busy Lady travelled over eleven thousand miles in that time without a single major engineering casualty. In addition she often supplied ships alongside with steam and power - all produced by the Engineering Depart- ment. Under the direction of LCDR Snead, Engineering is divided into five separate divisions. B Division is in charge of the ship's boiler system and related matters such as fuel. MH Division covers the machinery of the engine rooms, and on the side its EVAPS gang produces the ship,s drinking water and boiler feed water.
