— YORKVILLE VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL June -1964 THEME During the past year, the Seniors studied and enjoyed poetry. They were enriched by this experience. They have, therefore, chosen the marvelous expression of poetry as the theme of PATHWAYS. Page 2 Your hands arc like pearls, Bringing forth beauty that is truly magic. You can describe so thoroughly The ways of a little girl: The ways of all things both mild and tragic. Your eyes are like the sun, Bestowing life to that which lives And that which will never live. You can look at a rose And your description can be surpassed by none. With the heart you see and give. Your ears are like sensitive instruments Receiving sounds from steadfast stars, Making them beat in our hearts. You find light in darkness; In silence you find sound and contentment. Be there whisper, you will find it Though it be near or far in every part. FMrlecti Davis Thou art a monument without a tomb. Ben Jonson DEDICATION We dedicate this book to the memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. IN MEMORIAM To see a man so kind, so good diminished in your neighborhood, someone the world has loved and cheered, an image of a man not feared. A mass of flesh which bore Our Lord within his breast, Christ was adored. He did so much for everyone and Russia’s heart he also won. Where e’er he traveled, near and far, he was guided by God’s brightest star; hands were shook, smiles were cast, A memory now; this man has passed. For Adam, God created Eve, But our President was made to leave his wife, John Jr., and Caroline, to carry on his works, in time. Once there was a cheerful nation rich with goodness in God’s creation gaily riding in a motorcade unknowing, for him, a bullet was made. People, who cheered, now have cried their tears, from the world, they couldn’t hide. To serve your country, he hath said; this he did, and now, he’s dead. A form of truth and bravery like Lincoln, banished slavery in different manner; this we know, forcing discrimination to go. His eyes now shut; his lips so still, this innocent form brings a silent chill while now his lifeless body lies amongst the heroes in our tear-filled eyes. Jo(tn Pefock Page 3 For it is a pleasure, too, to remember” Ovid To the Graduates: Although I am no longer at Yorkvillc, I still feel that your graduating class is MY class. I did spend two and a half years with you and had the pleasure of watching your progress from your sophomore to senior year. I am proud to be able to say that I was your principal during that time. You arc a group of fine young ladies who would be a credit to any school or any principal. We have a great deal in common. My years at Yorkville, like yours, were successful and happy ones, and neither you nor I will ever forget them .May you continue to prosper and may you always have good fortune! Sincerely yours, Simpson Sasseraih Reason and calm judgment, the qualities specially belonging to a leader ” Tacitus To the Graduates: I should like to take this opportunity to greet you and, at the same time, to wish you well in whatever you do after you leave Yorkville Vocational High School. For many of you, this will be the end of your formal schooling. May I urge you, however, to keep three major goals in mind. First, try by force of personality and behavior to serve as a good citizen of your city, your state, and your country. Second, continue to develop your mental abilities by reading good books, by listening to good music, by expanding your intellectual horizons. Third, make use of the training which has been given to you to become successful in your chosen career or profession. You will find that your service as an intelligent, well-employed citizen will give you the satisfaction and happiness that lead to a good life. Sincerely, Sherwood Friedman. _ r Page 5 Good counsellors lack no clients” Shakespeare A Message to the Seniors Your years at Yorkville have, indeed, been historic ones! During the three years you have spent here, the emergence of many new nations and power struggles in some of the older nations have taken place. In our own country, we witnessed the election of the nation’s youngest President. And you and I were also unfortunate to see the assassination of that same man in whom the voters of the country had placed such confidence. Let the world go forth, he said in his Inaugural Address, to friend and foe alike that the torch is passed to a new generation. You are a part of that new generation who, having received the torch, must guard it lest its flame go out. The greatest tribute that can be paid to the memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy is our dedication to make this country and the world a place in which all mankind may live together in harmony. May God give you the love, the determination and the strength to complete the task to which he was committed, and for which he died. This is what a poem can do: Build and strengthen you anew; Give you fortitude and courage When alone a storm appears; It can fashion and remake you So that fate can never break you; It can comfort and console you When your eyes are wet with tears; This is what a poem can do. Lorraine Middleton THIS DAY OF MOURNING This day of mourning to my Commander-in-Chief, Like a soldier of fortune, he had but one wreath, And that from a country he loved well. He was a symbol to us, like the Liberty Bell. The torch before his grave stands For freedom and for a brave, brave man. Like the torch, he was a light for every land. The flag, like his spirit, will live on and on. Like a fine painting or a precious stone. This to you, Commander-in-Chief: We, the people, mourn for you. We walk behind you. Tuirleen Davis A FRIEND God is my friend; He’s your friend too. He’ll help us till the end If we promise to be true. Whenever you’re in despair And in need of reconciliation. Just go to Him in prayer; He'll give the best consultation. Whenever you need a friend, Remember what I say, He is with us till the end, He’s near this very day. Page 18 Jean Reed A FLAG A flag flics high o’er America; it stands for freedom and for peace. ’twas carried thru the wars so cold our honor for it shall never cease. The wind blows free throughout her veins and holds a dream for all the world; she’s hoisted high, and stands erect with arms out-stretched being tossed and curled. She embraces us with love and life and guides our land throughout the night, and wakes us with the morning’s call, filling us with truth and light. She carries memories of those men who never lived to tell the story of how they fought to save her name and helped to win her fame and glory. In her breast, they still march on sc brave, and with fraternity, bleeding, dying, 'till they fall; they’ll live in her for eternity. f 9 ► WHERE DO WE STAND? There’s brutality and cruelty which all of us must face. There's loyalty and happiness which all of us should give. Although we know what life can bring, we must be prepared to face the facts, and try to live the best we can with the little things we may possess. So, when we’re down on all our luck, and nothing seems to change our needs; Look around! See what we have, and ask ourselves, Where do we stand?” Poems written by Joan Petock Page 19 AWAKENING The country has awakened To a bright and early morning. As the sun moves higher in the sky, People begin to scurry to work, To buy and sell whatever's in sight. As the day draws to a close, The people once again scurry home And soon the country's fast asleep. A WISH I'd like to be so happy That my heart would sing for joy; I’d spread this cheer around the world To every girl and boy. I'd give strength to those in hunger, Faith to those in pain; I'd be an everlasting light For hope and peace again. INSIDE LOOKING OUT When I look out the window, I see shining drops of water Falling from a charcoal sky And bouncing off a block street; The rain in dance. The windows of the buildings across the way Shine from the light that comes through them. And when I think of the cold damp bricks Of that building and mine, I think to myself, How lucky to be inside On a night like this. Poems written by Zeraida Rosa. Page 20 BOYS I think that I shall never see A boy who is not, a mystery. A boy who falls for every skirt; Then gets angry when you flirt. A boy who makes an early date; Then comes by an hour late. A boy who thinks it's cute to wear A flat-top instead of hair. A boy who either drives too fast Or accidentally runs out of gas. But, I guess, they'll have to do 'Cause I can’t love a tree. Can you? Paulette Nelmida SO MUCH TO ME You mean everything to me in so many ways, ways in which I can’t even stop to think of. You’re like a lily after a shower that opens its arms to caress me; you’re like the sunshine of the early morn that guides me on my endless way; you’re like the gentle mist of morning dew that softly kisses my eager lips; you’re like the brightest moon at night that waits for me to wander through the day and never gives me a chance to have an idle mind ’cause I’m so wrapped up in my love for you and always thinking of—your tender smile, your friendly touch, and your challenging heart.
